There isn't any permanent job in this day and age. I worked a number of jobs in my working life. I worked as a IT specialist, office worker, medical records specialist, web developer, and software engineer. I did a number of businesses, like retail business, and e-commerce. I saved my money, paid off my debts, like student loan debts, car debts, and mortgage over the years. I didn't waste my money on vacations and things I didn't need. I am semi retired at the age of 48. I just work a part time office job, and do business on the side.

im a professional programmer and cannot recommend this. the AI boom you see right now, from my perspective (having worked on products that use AI/ML technologies), is actually a bubble that's due to pop. ESPECIALLY in 5 years, imo. if you want to, play around with the services that provide something to you. actual AI/ML specialists required a lot of education in order to get to where they are. i have a friend at Google who required a Ph.D in order to get their position. i think you might have a better chance investing in your youtube channel. people enjoy watching you and listening to the things you have to say. have you considered this? i think youtube will be around for a long, long time, and you have more to offer the platform than you might realize.

AI entry skillset is very low. You can be on the operations side of AI in a matter of months. Learning how to run GPT is not the same as programming GPT. You can very easily get a job in maintaining and deploying AI as a consultant and not know anything at all about how it works internally.

It took me about 3 years of full time study (not working at all, I went back to college to do a second degree) to career change from English teacher to Software Engineer in my late 30s. I was successful. But I could not find an entry level Software Engineer job in Japan because of my age and low Japanese skill level. However it was relatively easy to find an entry level job in USA. American companies don't care very much about age, all they care about is skill. In USA, if you can do the job without needing much training, then you will get hired, regardless of your age/gender/background. But Japan is very different, its very hard for older people to start new careers, despite the worker shortage. Japan is the opposite of the US; they don't expect new workers to have any skill before starting the job, but they only hire young new workers who will stay with the company long enough to justify the time and money it takes to train them. I don't think you should risk a career change because you need to support your family. You already have a good job, so you should spend your time enjoying your life with your family. It might be different if you didn't have kids or a mortgage, but you have those responsibilities now.

@@claireglory No, in order to get a non-seasonal work visa in USA, you will need to get degrees. If you want to work in USA, you should get an undergrad degree in your home country, work 2+ years as an engineer in your home country, and then do a masters degree or PhD program in USA. And then while studying in USA, do internships with big American companies who can sponsor internationals after they graduate. The only other alternative is to get 2+ years of engineer work experience in your home country, and then move to USA on either a spousal visa or refugee visa. Education is necessary for employer-sponsored work visas, but not for spousal/refugee visas.

This field is meritocratic, as long as your are more mature and produce good results is all that matters. If you want to shorten the timeline you might want to first look at AI adjacent role related to your current field, data analytics/data engineering, AI infrastructure and cloud development. Eventually you will work out what area of AI you would like to work in. No point training for some aspect that becomes outdated. Second, I found it kind of inspiring when someone is thinking about new beginnings after 10-13 years of working in another area. I don't think its stupid at all. I'm almost 34 and work in IT for 13 years (not with AI, but as a mobile app developer and teamlead). And I think AI is most promising thing on the horizon. Also all the best IT/digital specialists I know was self taught fellows, therefore I think its totally doable. Some people said in the comments that with IT you doomed yourself for years of boring work, but I would say it really depends on people. I enjoy my work even after 13 years quite a lot. I suppose if you put enough efforts in something - you begin to love it and to find beauty in it. There are also two little thoughts I wanted to share. Maybe, if you will be comfortable with that Idea, you could register something like patreon account, so that your subscribers can support your channel with little donations? Maybe it won't be a lot, like extra 100$/months, or maybe more, but still, I think there are lots of people, who enjoy watching your videos. Also, a thought that came to my mind that maybe you could give a paid consultations about marketing in Japan? Both had a family and kids. I think it was very tough for them and it took them a bit longer to graduate. But both made it. 🤔😁 Maybe the only difference is that here in Germany University is free so there is no financial pressure to graduate quickly. The advantage of a computer science degree is that you learn a bit of everything. programming, computer architecture, networking, AI, math, databases, cloud computing, web development etc. You don't focus on AI, but get a general understanding and can adapt to almost any field computer science related. 🤔😁

great video - been a web dev for about 15+ years now - the biggest issue I have with AI is that people will not visit websites anymore - AI will give the answer. We are making websites to feed the AI and website or App owners will not get any benefits or revenue. Free websites will be gone and be behind paywalls and be more specialized so that humans will consume its content. It is not a great future for the internet. Niche content will be king for sure since the AI might not be able to handle certain questions. Maybe look into programming embedded devices like IoT or robotics since we will use them much more in the future. I see a lot of great projects in Japan assisting elderly population which can be exported easily to other countries. An idea does not need to be big to have a huge impact.

Personally, I would not suggest this. I work in IT, and I would say current AI technology is still very much in its early days and I think the excitement around it has overtaken common sense. I am not convinced that AI will be the groundbreaking thing everyone says it will. AI is a tool like any other and is only as useful as the person using it. If you are concerned about your future career prospects, that is understandable. However, I would far more suggest that you pursue IT fields that are in use and in demand now rather than what might be needed in the future. I think cloud computing is a great choice, there practically is no large business that doesn’t use it to some extent, and I expect it to remain a far more reliable and consistent choice for specialisation both now and in the future. Going all in on AI would be a risk, and while I mean no offence, at your age and with your responsibilities, I wouldn’t gamble on learning a prospective technology.

I remember hearing about this notion that the way information is organized in a brain that this knowledge of language has homogenous shape REGARDLESS of the language. It could be interesting to use AI to help train our brains to work in a similar but different paradigm in order to read, speak, and learn Japanese as an English speaker. Could be a startup idea, a competitor to traditional language apps. Not sure HOW you would do it, but I'm sure AI could at least help with text generation in this area.

Outside of making novel AI applications/web apps, I think much of A.I. is hinged upon academia. I dont have any experience, but I would start with some of the academic papers which publish findings in machine learning/generative pre-trained text algorithms. It's still highly experimental and not very clear what sort of impact, if any, it will have in the next 10 years.

"AI specialist" is too vague of an objective. Developing new AI algorithms (building AI itself) is an extremely academic pursuit, likely requiring more than 5 years of university specialization, and also requires that you publish peer-reviewed scientific papers. If you mean building things with AI, that's a more general software engineering role. That's more achievable, as it only requires general programming knowledge (data processing, data structures, networking, etc). You could become a software engineer in under 5 years. However, AI will be impacting this area as well, and could make it harder for junior developers to find jobs in the future.

You don't have to publish peer reviewed articles to program something. Some of the successful people in the AI world are more or less self-taught. Of course there are a limited number of things to do if someone is trying to make cutting edge technology, so it's easier to work with what already exists. But I don't think someone needs to go to graduate school to build AI.

AI is going to affect almost every job that has tasks it can perform, so it's not just training and development. Just being able to create a prompt, which is very task and model dependent is going to be highly useful and likely to put you above most people in your field. I wouldn't even consider doing anything in software development if you're not also heavily focusing on how to utilize AI. I'd hold off on school right now if you're older. The general consensus so far seems to be that people are going to be looking more at your ability to quickly learn and problem solve, practical and transferrable skills for many jobs. Some programming and training experience will probably be helpful too. I think AI will move much too quickly for the traditional 4 year degree to continue to be a useful for many jobs. We're going to have to adapt and quite frankly, for degrees to remain useful, they will need to remove all of the extra garbage schools shoved into their programs to justify 70% of your time there.

As we get older and we have more responsibilities, inevitably, our personal goals are slower to be achieved, as well as more difficult. Although Greek, there is an ancient Chinese say that I love and write on the first page of all my notebooks. 不怕慢只怕站 (perhaps in hiragana makes sense in Japanese as well, it means that do not be afraid of snowlines, afraid of being still). Just imagine yourself in 5-10-15 years, when you will regard your 50yo of age as young, that you did not take that steps to reach your goal. You, me, we is not guaranteed that we will achieve our goals. But our life is this process, expectations we have to slowly move on. I am 44, having this wishful thinking that one day I could live with my family in Japan. Do not know if we will ever achieve that (although we will be moving soon very close to Japan) but through this dream-goal, new things will be coming to our way. Your videos, topics, voice calms me down while I work. ありがとうございます。

I noticed the CS students are well trained in coding but do not have proper foundation in math to properly appreciate modern machine learning/AI. If you intend to work as a basic level AI professional, you need to be at least proficient as a coder and be willing to learn linear algebra, calculus and probability/statistics. If you want to be a researcher, then you likely need a PhD and be very strong in math. With the hype these days about AI a lot of people will be going into the field so you have consider the competition you will likely face. Nothing is impossible but if you not have at least a basic degree in STEM, it will be a steep learning curve.

Nope not too late at all, if you want it really bad youll make it happen. I work in a multinational IT consultancy and the need to train up and become knowledgeable on AI is growing as more businesses want to use AI in their operations. Now for me I wont train myself up yet, but theres plenty of training labs you can do online. Reading books can be a drag. A high level understanding of AI can be achieved by anybody, going lower level can be tricky depending on your technical competency and acumen. My advice, read books on the backbones of AIs as in the algorithms can types of them. I did the same learning about supervised and unsupervised learning methods from reading journals as well as the different algorithms/mechanisms - like neural networks, basean networks, decision trees, monte carlo. You can learn alot from reading and im a slow reader myself. BTW I am not an AI SME, not even anywhere near close more like a beginner. Same applies to programming in C, Java, Python, R. plenty of labs online for all this stuff. Like a once Japanese fisherman who used to be a tennis player once said- "NEVER GIVE UP"

I agree that it's a good idea to take some action now to make your life easier later. 1. Most efficient way to double your income would be if your wife would study (if she hasn't already of course). Then she could start working once you children are old enough to look after themselves (in 4-5 years of so) 2. Simply becoming an AI developer might not be enough. You should focus on how you can leverage you previous experience while using AI as a tool. Then you can get going earlier than 5 years and have more impact. Starting with a simple online course (cousera, etc.) should be fine for a start. Maybe even become self-employed as a contractor, because then your AI-efficiency really pays off. All the best and good luck to you and your family!

@@askjapan9669 I went into AI at 53yo in Canada, and to answer your question "how many years It requires to be an independent AI specialist" : there are two levels. One level is when you have intuition on the mathematical level and and can create machine learning algorithms and innovate. Another level is when you adapt someone's work, take general models off the shelf and adapt to your data. The first level requires deeper initiation into mathematics (linear algebra, probabilities and statistics, calculus). That alone takes years of study. The second level is lighter on the fundamentals. The situation is equivalent to engineers who design a factory and tech specialists who work at the factory, stamping products. The tech specialists have their share of complexity, but on a different level. I think both levels have the right to existence. Just contributing this nuance so you understand that "an independent AI specialist" is leaning to the tech worker level. To become such tech worker, I would say you'd need a year to immerse yourself into mathematics on a serious level, and a year or more to learn Python, PyTorch,, etc.

Try a course that teaches you using projects as part of the package. If you have projects you can test your AI skills. Then you can train your AI skills by competing in online AI competitions on community sites. Code competitions can also work to get experience. If you learn on the side you can do it. If you want it you can do it! You might need to learn in English because there are many courses and communities on AI and programming in English. However, you may only find a few in Japanese but you never know. Do your research and see what you can find to suit your budget and time etc. Maybe there are japanese courses available on the market. I'm a foreign Software Engineer working for an AI company in Tokyo. Someone specializing in AI will typically have a background in software engineering or will have specialized in AI as part of a post graduate Computer Science degree. There are alternative pathways, although I can't say I've met anyone who's entered the industry that way. My goal here isn't to dissuade you, but as someone who's 15 years younger I already feel old compared to many of my peers. Age discrimination plagues the tech industry and it's not only an issue in western countries, I've seen subtle hints of it in Japan too. Is there a way you could learn some of these skills and apply them to your existing line of work without jumping into a new profession? It's quite common now for people to say that AI won't replace all programmers, just the ones who don't know how to use it. The same should apply equally in other professions. Regardless of your choice I would urge you to factor your young family into your decision.

However, learning to use it and having some knowledge about it is a good thing, especially in your field. AI is a tool that gives leverage. However, AI will most probably create new kinds of jobs and change existing ones, whether directly or indirectly, along with removing a lot of tasks or jobs (but mostly boring and/or painful tasks, that's the good news). AI will never replace human creativity, true creativity I mean. I think the best we can do is take advantage of any opportunity we may encounter to adapt ourselves to the AI revolution if one is really to come. Take some hints from the worries people had when all the industrial machines replaced human labor; finally, the machines created a lot of jobs and made work less painful.

Interesting. The current AI is able to receive our command/prompt through Natural Language Processing and they have been train on vast amount of text data primarily in English, hence its prompt comprehension optimized for English more than any other language, afaik. When I was trying to do much more complex prompt engineering my limited English and grammatical mistakes come as obstacles for the AI to deliver the output that I intended, in this sense there's a correlation between mastering expression in English with one ability in prompt engineering. Social media, video editing, and content creation that can incorporate AI are already in high demand in the job market. If you have a KZread channel and experience in sales and marketing, adding prompt engineering skills and proficiency in operating AI tools (such as image and video manipulation for deep fakes), copywriting, video editing, and storytelling can make you the ideal candidate that many companies are seeking. The best part? You don’t need to master programming languages like Python or C++ to excel in these areas, you just expanded your skill together with AI and digital technology.

I have no idea what you should do. But learning AI isn't a BAD idea, anything like programming might be good for an analytical thinker like yourself. I am a professional programmer. All it takes is a desire to learn and pondering mind.

Even if you go down AI route, needs to come with experience, especially if you want to increase your salary from where it is now. Things you can do right now, today. Teach English and or Japanese online. Very little expenditure and you can put more money to paying down your mortgage sooner.

AI is becoming more and more important for big companies every day. If you are trying to look ahead so you can secure your and your family's futures then it isn't a bad idea to give it a shot. You don't need to spend a ton of money going to school either, there are absolute loads of resources on the internet you can use to learn.

Honestly I think you are never too old to do anything. Regarding AI, you should try it as a hobby and see if you are interested to continue as a career. If your priority is to earn a good salary to pay back your loan faster, I recommend general IT with a minor focus on AI. Software Development / Coding is not for everyone. I learned Computer Science and realized that I enjoy coding but only as a hobby. As a job, I find infrastructure much more interesting and rewarding. The salaries for IT infrastructure are usually better in Japan than software development too, and there is a shortage.

I would consider getting a free house in a village where there are still a lot of children. You can start an eikaiwa in your home. I opened one in Nagoya for 8 years and did very well. Village life in Japan is great for your kids. You can get by driving a kei truck All your students pay in cash so you can pay less taxes. You can charge less tuition than they charge in the cities. And you can cram all classes into Friday afternoons, saturdays and sundays. Life can be so cheap, and much more relaxing. If you are interested in a partner, I’ve owned eikaiwas in Japan and china for 24 years. It’s a very easy business to become profitable very quickly.

Tricky situation - you don't need to be good at maths nor an IT degree. You won't have time to devote full time study with a family, so you're going to have to do it part time. I have read other comments here. I'd add the suggestion to go to an IT meetup nearest you and talking with people. You need connections. The tech field is like a treadmill, you have to keep learning and adjusting. Good luck. がんばれ!

Don’t try to become an “AI specialist”. Instead learn some AI and basic programming and use your years of experience from your current job to build things that help make people in your job more efficient. I am working in AI as a software engineer and what I am seeing over and over again is that people have the best success when they can apply their existing expertise from their jobs or hobbies, because that is what the AI engineers usually don’t have. The AI part is often rather simple and a bit of prompt engineering can be learned in days or weeks. The hard part is finding the right problems. What are things you hate doing in your current job? What are boring things that you repeat over and over? Can any of those be automated and would other people benefit from those solutions, too? Then start solving those with the simplest possible AI solution and go from there.

Inflation is likely to continue accelerating, and the US Federal Reserve may likely raise rates again in response. I'm sure you already know that Japan is a major importer of food and energy, so with the monetary predicament in which the BOJ finds itself, food and energy inflation concerns are likely to overwhelm most people in your country (and across the developed world) long before AI returns the kinds of profits that tech companies are looking for. AI is very likely in a speculative bubble and is not sustainable long-term given its financial and energy cost in a higher interest rate environment. If you have legitimate concerns about feeding your children over the next 20 years, you may want to consider relocating to an area in the countryside and working towards the ability to produce a significant portion of your own food, along with picking up a trade or craft skill that would be recognizable to your ancestors (most of us may have to). Building community in such an environment would be key as well. Making this transition may be scary, and could take years, but if you can do it your children won't have to. Good luck to you, regardless of what you choose.

I would say you are definitely NOT stupid to think about studying IT programming. However, I would say: what do you *really* want to do? I could be wrong but I'm not sure you *want* to do IT work/programming... seems to me you are seeking it out because it seems "right" or "popular" or "secure"...? IMO, it helps to have a passion for the subject you are studying for. Otherwise, it becomes a chore and difficult to succeed.

The problem is you don’t invest in US based stocks. You continue to be a wage slave and it’ll never end for you unless you have assets that greatly surpass your annual income. You need to invest as much as possible, multiply the value of the assets through long-term holdings, then go into income producing securities. The income from these securities should yield an income greater than your annual wages.
