I LOVE LUCY!--Behind the Scenes Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance Secrets You May NOT Have Know!
Sometimes we watch a great show like this and fail to realize these are individuals with real lives and real problems. How professional these individuals were that we did not notice their problems on screen. Even after death, we continue to watch them and they make us laugh endlessly. This is a tribute to their greatness!

I ALWAYS LOVED VIVIAN "VIV" VANCE! I MET HER IN 7th GRADE WHEN SHE CAME TO MY SCHOOL! I HAD A BROKEN LEG WITH A HARD CAST UP MY LEG & SHE ASKED ME WHAT HAPPENED & I TOLD HER ABOUT MY HORSE & HOW I BROKE MY LEG! SHE WAS JUST FANTASTIC & I FELT LIKE I KNEW HER FOREVER, SHE WAS SO SWEET, KIND & EVERYTHING GOOD! YEARS LATER I FOUND OUT HER HUSBAND WAS BEATING THE HELL OUT OF HER & THAT HORRIBLE MAN WAS IN AN EPISODE OF I LOVE LUCY & HE WAS DORY SHERRY, THAT AWFUL HORRIBLE BASTARD WAS HER HUSBAND. VIVIAN VANCE A GREAT ACTOR AND TRULY A SPECIAL PERSON TO ME! I LOVED (Ethyl) VIVIAN VANCE ONE OF A KIND!!!!!!!!💝💝💝

As this is my all time favorite show, I always enjoy Rick's commentaries. I have watched the show and own the series on DVD so I can watch episodes over and over. I am amazed when talking with men friends, that so many still love the show and know the episodes, some by heart and can repeat the dialogue. It is one series that does not age. Sure some comments are out of date as are some cars and props like tvs, but who cares. The dialogue is timeless. Thank you.

Great stuff, as always, Rick. Thanks for the great information! I remember reading that both Lucy and Vivian were undergoing marital difficulties simultaneously. (Maybe this helped solidify the close relationship that developed between the two). Vivian's first husband was abusive towards her, and it soon became obvious to her co-star's on the show. Lucy finally said to Vivian, "If you don't divorce him, I will!"

I remember Lucille Ball saying Bill Frawley was Fred Mertz; also knew that Vivian Vance had issues growing up and had a breakdown and spent some time in a mental hospital. She was married 4x and one husband (I think the one while she was on the ILL show) was emotionally and physically abusive and Lucy talked her into get help - she then divorced him; her last husband lasted the longest but he was gay.

Vivian Vance was one of my favorites on this show, and you are so right one did not see her in behavior that would display mental illness, indicating her needing outside care. She was a true professional, all of the stars on this show, kept to the program when on air and if they had outside problems it sure did not turn up on the show. Today you hear all the crap about stars life off the job, like give them a break.

6 years is a long time to begrudge someone. Vance and Frawley said things that were offensive to each other. Their interactions as a couple were entertaining. The vaudevilian skits and musical bits they performed and being part of the Ricardo's antics were so wonderful and hysterical. I can't imagine working so closely together that their disdain could be so intense. Regardless of what I know now about any of them, will never remove what I have seen and loved all my life, their comedic genius. Every time I watch an episode, I see detail I never did before.

Have you ever considered doing a behind the scenes of The Long Long Trailer movie Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball made in 1954. It has some interesting information I wont reveal, but leave it up to you to reveal in a video if you decide to venture off the series and do a video about this movie.

Bart Andrews' LUCY & RICKY & ETHEL & FRED (Dutton, 1976) is an excellent source for all the behind-the-scenes drama for that show. I'd also highly recommend Castelluccio & Walker's THE OTHER SIDE OF ETHEL MERTZ: THE LIFE STORY OF VIVIAN VANCE (Knowledge Ideas & Trends, 1998) for more in-depth coverage of Vance and her relationship with the rest of the cast.

Wow, considering how successful the show became, and how much Vivian and Bill contributed to that it is amazing that they made so little for so long. Vivian on screen now seems to remind me a lot of my sister. My sister has been and still is in a marriage the rest of the family thought was abusive...and is getting worse. Like another commentor here suggests, Lucy and Viv sharing a similar experience must have made them closer. And I have to wonder if their marital woes influenced the decision in later Lucy shows for neither woman to be remarried. William Frawley: your description of him puts me in mind of several of my uncles. A few of them liked to drink, nearly all liked to talk, only 1 liked to argue, but in the end all (but the arguer) were gentle men. Damn, he sounds like a real character, great guy, thanks for the video.

Howard Kerr: I simply cannot understand in this day and age why your sister stays in that abusive relationship. Just as bad why can't you and your family intervene somehow. Remember this is 2019 not 1955.

@@roberttelarket4934 I don't want to speak for Howard, but many women in abusive relationships experience traumatic bonding with their abuser. That is, as a result of abusive incidents, they feel paradoxically closer to him. Not only does he abuse her, but he also comforts her afterward. Think about it: you're scared, you're traumatized, you're possibly in physical pain. You will feel a certain closeness and indebtedness to the person who consoles you afterward. This creates an incredibly strong bond. Every abusive incident tightens the bond a little bit more and the woman comes to identify with the abuser. (This happens in abused children too.) This is akin to Stockholm Syndrome. Here's an illustrative study: researchers analyzed the jailhouse calls of men arrested for domestic violence made to their wives/girlfriends. The men all tried to convince the women to drop the charges. But none of them tried to intimidate her or threaten her. Rather, they appealed to her sense that "we're in this together," that it is "us against the world." Things have changed societally and legally regarding domestic violence since the 1950s, true; but the dynamics of abusive relationships? They've been more or less static for thousands of years.

@@cosmos34: You're right. I don't disagree with you but I don't understand it. It's similar as you say to Stockholm Syndrome but it's different. You're not in a prison-like situation if you have at least average intelligence and you have some financial means. Even without this and more difficult children or family members unwilling or incapable of helping in the last few decades with all of this out in the open on the news and talk-shows unlike before the 1970s there are means of escaping.

It's funny how their dislike for each other behind the scenes made for amazing on-screen chemistry. I wonder if the two of them realized that it made the Mertz marriage more believable? But also, if I made a comment like that about the age difference, and it clearly hurt my co-star, I would've felt bad and apologized. There are people that I really can't stand at my job but I always do my best to be civil and professional. At least Frawley and Vance were true pros and never let their personal issues get in the way of the show's success.
