I LOST 60 pieces of my ART 😱 ✿ Artist Studio Vlog 9✿

Ойын-сауық

A big thank you to ‪@square‬ for gifting me a brand new Square Terminal! I am so excited to use it at my next market on the 8-10th of December.
If you are interested in finding which one I am showing off in this video you can check it out here: squareup.com/shop/hardware/au...
Hello, my name is Shelby and I am a potter based in Victoria, Australia.
In this vlog, I get ready to do it all over again! After selling out at my first market, I am attending another Finders Keepers but this time I am heading to Sydney!
Grab your early bird tickets here: www.thefinderskeepers.com/sydn...
* this lets you in first thing with out delay of waiting in line and paying for tickets! This is how a lot of people grabbed pieces really early one at the Melbourne event, I highly recommend!
Throughout this video I take you behind the scenes of all parts of the process with lots of Timelapse's. The Timelapse's make it a little easier to keep focused on the work at hand whilst being able to show you what I am up too.
I hope you like these videos as a little something different whilst I prepare and I will have my regular goodness back soon once I get through some of this work!

One tip for the anxiety in general, and for leaving the kiln to fire, is to take a picture of the moment where you could see the settings. I use this when I am going for a trip and get anxious if I left kitchen appliances on or if I closed the door.

Your continued effort to not create waste is commendable. Anyone would enjoy one of your peices, even the blooper ones. The journey we have all watched you take would make those pieces extra fun to purchase as to remind us that things happen but, you still love what you do.

For those worried about shipping, she's not kidding. I bought a set of galahs, my package arrived with a torn shipping box and my postie tried to throw my parcel before I yelled "FRAGILE STICKER!" at him (sent Auspost a complaint about both things). My galahs are perfectly safe on my bookshelf until I figure out how to hang them.

Mistakes happen don't be hard on yourself and even waste pottery can have a use, broken down for use in mosaics, or turned into grog. I made the mistake of leaving my heat proof gloves on top of my kiln on an over night firing! Came back to a mound of green crumbs and a toxic smell. Checked the security camera and they had caught fire in the night! Luckily it hadn't gone beyond the fireproof kiln lid! Mistakes like these definitely stick with you and now I triple check the lid to make sure nothing is on it when I fire!

Little tip from someone who lives with anxiety. Take a quick pic on your phone of the kiln temp. That way when you wake up worried, you can quickly look at your phone to reassure yourself.❤

  • @jenw5854
    @jenw58548 ай бұрын

Given that you have other personnel in the studio now you could consider implementing a second person verification (SPV) for critical steps. Person 1 sets the kiln temp. Person 2 checks the temp and starts it. Many industries use this approach and it might help decrease both mistakes and your anxiety about it.

For holidays like Christmas or Halloween, you can always work on items throughout the season when the mood strikes you, and so long as you have storage, you can always save those pieces until the next year and you’ll have less stock to make immediately beforehand.

As a screen printer I find it disappointing that the maker has messed up your colors as the Pantone matching system has the formula for each colour so each batch will be the same. ps I love your all of your designs ❤😊

It was a bit frustrating. I’ve ordered so many times and never had an issue until this batch! The colours looked like they hadn’t cured enough! Like the darkness up close looks like the enamel is a bit transparent instead of opaque! It’s so weird. Screen printing? What do you screenprint out of curiosity 🤭

Maybe "wrong" ceramics are unsustainable and won't break down - but so much archaeology we have is from that kind of thing and it's SO valuable to help understand what peoples' lives were like in the past! So even ceramics that do have to get thrown out eventually can serve a very important purpose, though different from its original intent

Oh, I hate the physical feeling I get when something is spoiled. Ugh! Now, at my age, I’ve learned to respect imperfection as intrinsic. Wouldn’t it be cool for you to have a smart kiln you could monitor with a phone or tablet? Alternatively, it would be good to do a check of everything before leaving. You could make a checklist. Oh, you are a honey bun!

I'm so sorry that this happened for you. But I was wondering if you can take those "wasted" pieces and paint them with acrylic paint and seal them with gloss spray. Or, even better, you could sell the pieces that are unpainted and not glazeable to people as blanks for them to paint for themselves. I'm a "painting with acrylic" girl and I would jump at the chance to buy the ones you have that are blank and possibly won't accept glaze. Either way, it is impossible for any human being to go through life without making mistakes, because our mistakes are some of our greatest achievements. You're AWESOME!! I love how concerned you are about sustainability, but I think you can be a little easier on yourself! Unlike plastics which don't break down and also leech harmful chemicals into the environment ceramics aren't nearly as harmful. And, even though they don't "break down," they can pulverize and become and become new sediments, like how seashells become sand or even just lumpy bits of rock in the environment- and the environment loves rocks, it's great habitat for animals to hide under!

I make Christmas tree ornaments out of real egg shells and I was worried about breaking in shipping. Found that wrapping and placing in a bed of paper works great!

Have you tried the hairspray trick? I haven't but have read a few times that spraying the piece with hairspray helps the glaze to stick when needing to re-fire. Might be worth a try?

I did! I personally found it did not work at all!! It might work on different clays but it didn't work on mine!

If I were to put a check sheet beside the door where I can note that I have double checked the temperature before I leave the studio that might help reduce the 10 p.m. double check of the temperature.

Ah Shelby, you know that you're going to wish you'd ordered twice the amount of keyrings and pins :)

You are only human! ❤ a lovely human at that. I recently made two big mistakes while making mass herbal creams. It’s the worst feeling.

Sweetie, don't beat yourself up on 'contributing' to non sustainable stuff. If the pottery from ages ago didn't exist we wouldn't know how people stored their food, etc. Your pieces may find themselves in a far distant future discovered by archeologists! That's an exciting thing to imagine! There is such a thing as being too obsessed with this whole sustainability movement. Mother Earth can take care of herself. She's shaken off things that bothered her before and she'll do it again. 💚Absolutely love your stuff.
