I live in Alaska now! (Girl Takes A Job As A Deckhand And Moves To Alaska)

I've been here in Alaska for one month now, it is absolutely beautiful! This trip wasn’t planned, however I needed a job. So I randomly applied for one coolworks.com and two weeks later, here I am. Its been a whirlwind of a journey joining the company mid season, getting trained in and now working 50 hour weeks. But I love it; The company, the people, the boat, and of course working at sea. Our season only lasts until late Sept though, so Im saving all I can to be able to travel again in the fall.

I remember my years in SE AK. As a 20-something, commercial fishing, running wild... Ketchikan, Juneau, Klawok, Wrangell, Petersburg. Everywhere. We weren't able to film like you do today. So many things are changed now. Thank You for documenting what is there now, what is left... Don't ever forget. Make notes every day. Journal your days in paradise. When you leave/get older you will forget and not be able to stitch it together correctly. Write it all down, please.

Remarkable video! Such a beautiful place; I envy you. I can't even imagine being in a place where so much incredible natural beauty exists, and where life appears to be so simple. This video has made me regret so many of the decisions that I made early in life. I've worked so hard to be successful and climb to the top of my profession, and now I realize that's really nothing. You are living your life well and enjoying all the beauty in the world. Thanks for sharing this.

I love that music. I miss Alaska. My first taste of Alaska was in 1998 when I drove up to Skagway. I road the AK marine highway to Juneau that year to work as a rafting guide in Juneau for Alaska Travel Adventures. I ended up coming back two years later to work for TEMSCO helicopters to work as a guide on the Mendenhall again in Juneau. I'll never forget the sense of atachment I had to the wild and the sense of pure alone I felt in Skagway living out of my truck so far away from everyone I knew. So happy, and so sad to be alone. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world.

Suzy Bae Do you feel threatened by men? Of course you do. You just haven't understood that men and woman are different. That doesn't make one better than the other, but just different. Woman have strengths that men don't have and vice versa. Nobody said woman can't work just as hard or harder than a man. Reading your post I sense a lot of anger towards men, that's too bad that you choose to go through life for not simply seeing a person as they are.

I believe this is only my second comment on youtube ever! Woa! I spent too summers in Skagway as a hiking guide. There is a small clinic with nurses and a physician's assistant. Dentist comes once a month. We have a dedicated fire department (with a brand new station this year) that responses to fire, search and rescue, and emergency medical calls. I am a part of the FD and we participated in training every week. Hope this helps!

I wish I would had taken the plunge when I was a young man. I know in my heart I would still be there. If anyone ever gets a chance to visit this city or Alaska,, take it. You won't be disappointed. Good Luck up there.

I don't see people having a more fulfilling or happier life today, than we had back in the 70's and 80's when we had no internet. One major diffrence of course, was back then your friends were people that you actually knew, liked and socialized with. Unlike today when so many people have hundreds of friends on social media, and yet seem to be deeply lonely. Ridiculous.

Paul DG Back in the 70's, people were taught manners so they would know how to act civil toward others. Seems that children from the 80's on, are not taught those skills. Hence the lack of civility on the internet, and other public areas. I'm just hoping the "silent majority" still adheres to civil behavior, and are teaching manners to their children.

A 50 hour week is nothing when you love your job, love your employees or co-workers, your environment, your home, the outdoors. She works on a tour boat that travels around the connecting Lakes of Alaska and Canada. I bet she loves it. Plus, i'm sure she makes decent money doing that too. How is that not free? Unless you're referring to the commitment of a job? But then again, it's only temporary, she said she was doing it to save up money for more travels. and besides even when she does travel, recording and video editing is her full time job and that is time consuming and difficult, especially when you're mobile. Isn't that the same commitment as a job?
