    I have to admit, although it took a few listens to get me to this point, TTPD had gone up to being my favourite album of hers 😂 it scratches a specific itch in my brain as an English major. I love all the literary allusions and references, and the chill vibes are definitely more my thing than the bubblegum pop or more upbeat songs 😆 I also wanna say that I love that you went into the deep dives to understand how people are interpreting the song!!! That's such commitment for a non-swiftie and I love hearing your thoughts (even if you don't end up liking the album that much) because I know you actually made the effort to listen and appreciate the lyrics 🙌🏼 Anyway, my top songs in no particular order... Down Bad, Guilty As Sin, The Black Dog, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, and The Prophecy

    Love it! Yeah in my other videos (not sure if you watched those) I basically shared/reiterated that taking a deeper dive into understanding an artist's reason for creating a song makes you appreciate it more. I guess I said that in this video too, but I tried to remain as subjective as possible. Since uploading this video the album has definitely grown on me since the first couple of days that I listened to it.

    @RellyMoorer oh yes I remember seeing the video where you mentioned that!! And it's especially true with artists like Taylor who are so autobiographical in their songwriting and like to make a lot of references and allusions (Taylor sometimes also samples her own previous work to make connections as well - like the beginning of So Long London after the bell chimes, which sounds like the beginning of Call It What You Want from Rep which was about the beginning of her and Joe's relationship 🥲)

    This album is a grower, but i think you're right that there are too many. I really love Clara Bow because it tells a great story about generations of "It" girls who are are loved, then judged, then replaced, often because they are aging. The fact that she ends it with herself and being replaced by the next It girl shows a lot of self awareness and acceptance that all the fame is fleeting.

    these videos are excellent! the complaints i've seen in general about the album length are so surprising to me considering Red TV has 30 songs on it and no one really cared (but to be fair most average people probably weren't listening to it in its entirety anyways.....) i think casual listeners use "swiftie" when they think it means "a fan of taylor swift's music" but i think this album really is only going to fully resonate with people who specifically love the genre that is ✨Taylor Swift✨ if your favorite songs from her are her top hits like Love Story, Blank Space, and 22-then this album is not for you but if I'd Lie and Permanent Marker went triple platinum in your bedroom and you can recognize any of her songs within the first 3 seconds of them playing then this album is her magnum opus

    I am a swiftie and I think that this album is for those who are into poetry and literature in general, the others just will not get it and that's okay. I think it might be hard for some people to distinguish between some songs if you don't analyse stuff that much. And I feel like also knowing Taylor's whole catalogue very well really helps me to differentiate the songs, so if you're not exactly a swiftie and don't know the way she writes, her different habits when making songs etc, I absolutely get it. For me personally, 31 songs is and is not a lot. Of course, it is a lot, but for me, not in a bad way. I really think that all the songs are worthy of the album and I am glad she shared all of them with us. It is a lot in a way that it is a lot to take in and you really need some time with it. Of course, there are songs that I won't be playing as much as others, but they're all good. I don't agree with the opinion that she should've left it just at the standard album, that re-recording and putting out vault tracks spoiled her and now she thinks that every song she makes is worthy of an album... some of the songs on The Anthology part imho definitely better than some of the songs on the standard album. Anyway my top 5 in no specific order: Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, The Prophecy, Cassandra, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, So High School

This album is so divisive, I love all of the differing reactions and reviews and I agree that it does blend together a but when you’re listening to it back to back, especially The Anthology. Once you start to shuffle it with the rest of her discography or other music it begins to stand on its own. We also have similar favorites! First of all: I think it’s a bad idea to force yourself to listen to something when you are growing tired of it and would rather listen to something else. That mindset/mood would poison the well, so to speak. (Memories are strongly associated with emotions. You would be building the wrong emotional connections into your memories of this music.) Hopefully the damage in this case is not permanent and you can still find growers among the TTDP songs. Two camps have arisen around this album: (1) “The songs all sound the same” and/or “This album is just more of the same old stuff. She is not pushing her boundaries.” (2) “Wow! This sounds like practically a whole new genre!” You seem to be in the first camp, and I am in the second. For me, TTPD is my fave album of all time. From my perspective, people in the first camp are like ETs visiting Earth and saying “All these humans look the same. How do they tell each other apart?” Somehow their brains are hyper-fixated on certain obvious similarities and, thus, are blind to the fairly obvious and important differences. To me, the elements that sound similar to her previous work - or that sound similar from one song to another on the album - are elements that I love about TS songs. The similarities within the album sound, to me, like sonic cohesion - a quality that is generally celebrated and contributes to AOTY considerations at the Grammys but, for some reason, this album is getting attacked for it. As for the album being too long: Billboard is doing a poll where you vote for your favorite TTPD song. (As of today, you can still vote.) I find it interesting that all 31 songs have some votes. That seems like a sign of a great album. Every song is someone’s favorite. Nobody is forced to listen to all 31 songs in one sitting. What’s Your Favorite Track From Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department?’ Vote! www.billboard.com/music/music-news/taylor-swift-the-tortured-poets-department-poll-1235662683/ Obviously (I hope), I’m not accusing you of anything bad. I’m simply trying to highlight the contrasts between our subjective experiences and I’m offering my own reactions to your reactions. Thank you for taking on this project. I think even the ETs would clearly see that you are an amazing human being.

    The man has critiqued her other work so I'm sure he's aware of Taylor's moody style by now. Just feels like your policing him on how to feel

  • @RellyMoorer

    @RellyMoorer

    Sheesh....Naw I don't feel any specific accusations. I'm not in either camp honestly. I tried to remain as subjective as possible and understand that ultimately this is just my opinion. Sure I thought it sounded the same for a while, but that was on my first couple of listens and surface level attentiveness. It's different now as it's been a week since I stopped recording this video. The growing tired of listening to it was more of a FOMO from everything else lol. No damaging emotional connections because I've made 2 other videos where I listened to all of her albums and watched all of her music videos. The first camp would be an average listener IMO lol. I agree with you on a lot of this though, there are elements that remind me of her previous work like But daddy I love him and So high School. I personally would put myself between an average listener and a swiftie (leaning more towards swiftie because I appreciate her music and most average listeners don't and they'll attack her like you mentioned) I also think that a lot of people felt pressured to hurry up and binge listen the entire thing which may have led to complaints of the new song. I even know people that I know aren't fans of her and listened to the albums (why? no idea lol) Overall, she's Taylor Swift and like anyone with her status, she's gonna get some hate and it'll seem louder than anything else Thanks for this comment though. I think I addressed everything

    This album was a letter to her fans. So totally fine if outsiders don’t get it. And no, not too many songs. Not the first artist to release two albums at once, and her fans are totally used to many new songs given what happened during the pandemic and her re-recordings. Many people are still not understanding that Taylor Swift is a once in a lifetime phenomenon. They are not getting it. She doesn’t care about industry rules and standards, she’s the industry. I actually really enjoy this album... BUT I also agree it's a lot of songs to drop in one night. And it's a very specific vibe, like being alone on a walk or something. I think the reasoning behind it is (if you payed attention to the lyrics) she is letting go of all her past issues/trauma/whatever you want to call it and she is ready to move on. I just think she didn't want to hold on to any of this anymore because overall the album is a pretty depressing/sad vibe. Very relatable, but she seems so much happier in her life at the moment and I think she just wants to move on and be happy and leave all that sadness and drama from her past behind. (Seems to be what she's saying in the Manuscript). That's just my personal opinion :) Oh, fave songs are definitely "I look in peoples windows", "I hate it here", "the albatross", and "the prophecy" 🩷

Overall, i liked a lot the album but i agree that it grew on me day by day. It's not my favorite album of hers, but i never expected it to be, not in a bad way just in the sense that i kinda enjoy all her albums just some more than the others. My favorite is Folklore and this album is in my top 5 for sure. I think people (non-swifties) expected the album to be the best album of all time and if it didn't do it for them, which is understandable, they say it's the worst album ever. Also so many people are listenning to it that she can never win, if it's too poetic she's pretentious, if it's funny lyrics she's not a good songwriter. Just my thoughts, please be nice hahaha. I was underwhelmed on the first listen and couldn’t tell the songs apart. It’s a mellow vibe and that’s ok. She throws a lot of words at you in her signature cadence and your brain begins to swim. But when those melodic hooks start to adhere to your brain, you know you’re starting to absorb the album! Now that I’ve given it a few listens I think, like always, she has some of her most brilliant songs, many fine songs and then a few I don’t like. So Long London, LOML and Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me are big stand outs. There are a few super cringy lines… Charlie Puth? I mean, eye roll. And I can’t believe she used the word touchdown in a song about Travis. Ugh. Such a disappointment. I haven’t even gotten to the Anthology second half yet because 31 songs are too many damn songs.

    I loved the album on the first listen but I only listened to part 1. I instantly connected to the lyrics and found that it was both a different sound and also very familiar in a good way. I waited several days before listening to the Anthology and ended up liking it even better (I think? Honestly I just love both so much lol). Its like fighting up there for the number 1 spot with Folklore. I think the problem for a lot of people was that 31 songs felt like a lot and its hard to really appreciate them all at once. With that said, I am very happy with the 31 songs, not a lot of skips for me (about 5 songs i dont really like in there).

    Running to this album is craaazy 😂 i saw some girl say it was perfect for slow runs and i was like 🤨 I feel like Taylor released all of the songs because writing them was very therapeutic for her, and releasing them instead of keeping them on the editing room floor fits the theme of trying to break out of the box she's been put in. I think most people in today's society don't listen to albums all the way through on a regular basis- we listen to our favorite songs on shuffle. I'm sure Taylor knows that not all of these songs will get the same number of streams once we've all gotten our inital listens done and move on. I love The Prophecy, Cassandra, & The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, and I am enjoying dancing to My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, Down Bad, and Florida!!! ... as well as I Can Do It With a Broken Heart... even though that one made me genuinely concerned for a bit 😅

    My Top 5 is similar to yours. I'd swap Florida for Who's Afraid of Little Old Me and my honorable mentions would go to The Smallest Man and My Boy Only Breaks His Favourite Toys. I think it's a strong album but I was overwhelmed by the number of new songs all coming out at once. I wish we'd gotten say, a fortnight, between TPPD and The Anthology. Many of her friends and peers are releasing music right now too so I think the really short promo period leading to April 19 (not even a full week) and just ripping the bandaid off and releasing it all at once were probably meant to avoid monopolizing the convo for very long.

    I feel like this is an album you have to be in the mood for. It's not one that you put on while working out or working. It's an album you go to for introspection. I know that this album will have to be put on the shelf sometimes for me because of the sadness it evokes. Sometimes we just need something peppy (working out), mellow (chill work music), introspective (when we need to process emotions). So I say don't force yourself to listen to something when the timing is not right. For instance, I loved Dua Lipa's last album, but this one is not doing it for me. But I'm not writing it off yet, just realizing I'm not in the right place to listen to it. Same with the new song that came out for Imagine Dragons... I love them, but I don't like the new song. But it sounds like them, so I assume it's not the time for me right now.

Thats why some say taylor has "bars" lmaoo bc when u know the lyrics, you'll see she is ending people left and right. And the level of dedication fans have to discover this is similar to hip hop fans (see drake and kendrick rn) and metal fans. My fav double albums are All Eyez On Me and pink floyd the wall (even tho is not a double album, ts should have done "sides"). I loved the project and is, for now, my favorite from her, i feel like encapsulates her music from 2020-2023 and, again, in my opinion, she did her best work ever during this decade.

    It is A LOT of songs. But I would never say too many, because I love so much new content. I think it's not a correct assumption to say that the streams are going down because people don't want that many songs. I think the problem is time itself - I often start an album (any album) and then don't have the time to finish it. Sometimes 15 songs in, sometimes even 5 song in, that's just life. It has nothing to do with the content itself. But it does indicate that people listen to it as a whole, not just a few "random" songs.

    Anyone who would say the songs on this album sound the same clearly know ZERO about music/production or lyrics. It is her best album yet, but it is a little too advanced for the shallow listeners, they will need more time to grasp the genius of the production, lyrics and theme of this masterpiece. The blanket statement of it all sounds the same was to draw viewers in and at the beginning when I casually listened (background music) and didn’t pay attention to the lyrics sure yeah some sounded similar. In the video I said that the production was good. Lyrically they obviously are unique in their own way. Shallow listeners would be the “average person” IMO.
