I unironically enjoy a decent amount of this band's output. Enough to say that I really don't hate them like many seem to. Do they have some stinkers? For sure, but the first 3 albums are classic imo, and some of the later albums are definitely enjoyable as well. I only got into this band after seeing all the memes about Nightmare of the Decomposed, and decided to check them out further due to morbid curiosity. And frankly I found myself far more entertained by a lot of their work than I was expecting, given all the hate they get. A good portion of their albums really aren't offensive at all imo.. A lot of jt is kind of just solid fast food death metal at worst, which works enough for me.

I never really thought of Maximum Violence as Nu Metal, I consider it a pretty straightforward Death Metal album. I thought that Haunted borders on Death Doom. Only their Warpath album contains elements of Death and Roll. The song Amputate My Mind is pure 100% Obituary - the End Complete style. Love that album, and the Six Feet Under End Complete tribute as well. Further into their discography Six Feet Under attempted to be an actual Brutal Death Metal band to no avail. Nightmares of the Decomposed is just beyond description. It might just be the only album worthy to compete with St Anger as the absolute worst album in the history of music, that is an accomplishment. Aside from NOTD I like most of Six Feet Under's body of work. I really like their covers of Venom - In League With Satan, Exodus - Piranha , Savatage - Holocaust, and Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water. I feel like they did an excellent job of making Death Metal songs out of Holocaust, and Piranha. The Smoke On the Water is good because it is such well known song, and it's absolutely hilarious to hear it with Cookie Monster Vocals. Kind of like what Xentrix did with Ghostbusters.

Six Feet Under was one of the first death metal bands I heard, along with Bloodbath. (Bloodbath is basically a side project supergroup celebrating classic swedish death metal. Their first two albums are really what got me into Death Metal.) Honestly, the only Six Feet Under I really got into was Haunted and the first cover album. I wouldn't call myself a fan of the band, but I do like Haunted. Okay, I had to listen to their Nightcrawler cover after you said that. yeah...

@@DurkheadYeah, it can be a bit of a challenge to keep count in your head, but since the song doesn't really change time signatures as long as you keep the beat in your mind steady it isn't nearly as hard as something with wild time signature changes. If it is the riff I'm thinking of (it starts right at the start of the song) it's like almost half the song that is just that riff, so just practicing the whole song you get used to it pretty fast.

Nice video and also a surprising one. Expected a "SFU are complete crap" type of thing but I can agree with almost everything you said at the end of the video. Did not listen to new album yet. My favorites are "Warpath" and "Maximum Carnage" but listening to them in their entirety can be hard sometimes. Also the double of "Undead" and "Unborn" is pretty decent if I remember correctly. "Haunted" is good but overall a bit slow for my liking. The rest is really a mixed bag, just as you said. Main problem for me are the vocals and the perceived lack of motivation some of the albums emanate. However, I think the overall hate SFU get occasionally is not justified. They were pretty hip back in the days, at least for some time. But the "personality" of Mr. Barnes is sth completely different to consider. He seems to be a difficult character, to say the least.

I found this review to be hilarious to put it in your hipster lingo. I’ve been around death metal since 1994 many of these six feet under albums were music of the time at the time, most of the people didn’t even pay for these albums because they were getting them from Columbia house for nothing. I met all the original members of Six Feet Under. I met some of the newer members also the modern albums that Six Feet Under has a really bad, but I rather listen to the newest Six Feet Under album than be tortured by Cattle Decapitation, nor would I want to pay the cattle Decapitation price to ever see that band ever again. I remember when they opened up for Cannibal Corpse there at the chance in Poughkeepsie New York they were getting hamburgers and Travis Ryan was usually passed out from drugs in an RV well the Other Lacys in the band we’re getting him food to keep him alive.

Ironically, 1 album by Six Feet Under is titled 'Torment'... describing ur listening experience😂 Honestly, Six Feet Under had potential w/ Terry Butler on bass (former Death member) and Greg Gall on drums... Steve Swanson (guitar) is really good and played on a majority of the albums... Got to see them live in 2001. Watch the live DVD concert 'Double Dead' (2002) for that experience (I believe it was filmed in St. Paul, MN in the now-closed Station 4 venue where I saw a majority of great bands from Lacuna Coil to Krisiun) It just never blossomed after 'True Carnage'... and Six Feet Under became a borefest of death metal. Honestly, I feel like Chris Barnes has not been part of the death metal scene (or mentality) for a long time... he's just entrenched in the genre for his association w/ Cannibal Corpse and does not know how to pull off much else musically... George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher is still a death metal fan and it shows in his performances w/ Cannibal Corpse... Same w/ Erik Rutan (guitar) who has been a death metal devotee since his days in Ripping Corpse and Morbid Angel... and his own band Hate Eternal. It takes a certain dedication and enthusiasm to play and produce death metal and it's no good if that drive is not there... Jack Owen (guitar) actually left Cannibal Corpse in 2004 because he was becoming weary of playing death metal and wanted to explore other genres of music... He did join Deicide shortly after and stayed w/ them until around 2016(?)... A great death metal guitarist but creatively, he's not where he once was in Cannibal. I remember when Morbid Angel released 'Ilud divinum insanus' in 2011 w/ David Vincent (bass & vocals) and it was terrible... a mix of industrial drone w/ hints of death metal - it was beyond disappointing... Even after Steve Tucker (bass & vocals) rejoined Morbid Angel, the album 'Kingdoms disdained' in 2017 fell below the mark. David Vincent still performs Morbid Angel songs as I Am Morbid but he can't put out a record in the same caliber as those 1st 4 Morbid Angel records. Many bands have an unspoken rule that if the band cannot deliver a worthy album, they would not put any new music out... For example, Obituary went on hiatus in 1994 and came back briefly in 1997 w/ 'Back from the dead'... and it was just NOT a good record, so they never toured on it... Obituary finally came back w/ a truly worthy album 'Frozen in time' in 2005 and were back on tour after a decade... Another great comeback record for them was 'Inked in blood' (2014) after their record sales had floundered somewhat. Another example was S.uffo.cation... the band split in the 90's after 'Pierced from within' because of internal dissent... Thankfully, Frank Mullen (vocals), Terrence Hobbs (guitar) and original drummer Mike Smith brought the band back w/ a vengeance in 2004 w/ 'Souls to deny'... and have not stopped since. I think Six Feet Under is a perfect example of a band (technically a project now!) that puts music out in excess without much regard to the quality and quantity of the material they r putting out... Barnes could easily take his time and not put out a record until it can make Cannibal Corpse fans happy... but he does what he wants. It's the opposite of Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses) who took a decade to put out his solo Guns album 'Chinese democracy' and is still hesitant to put out a new Guns N' Roses album today.

I guess I’m one of the few six feet under defenders. Now there’s no denying Barnes vocals aren’t what they used to be and I would never defend them and i understand vocals is important to enjoying a band and an artist but I do stand by this hot take and opinion, It’s death metal. There’s no such thing a bad vocals

I am also a big defender of this band. Ya they have some not good stuff, and Barnes doesn't sound good anymore, but they also have enough good or at least decent albums that I think the amount of hate they get really isn't always justified.

@@Joshcoshbagosh 100% agreed. The hate is ridiculous. It’s death metal lol. Honestly it’s kinda refreshing hearing Barnes vocals because there’s so many death metal vocals that sound the same

@@joerazz91 ya because harsh singing became it's own art form basically instead of the super raw unrefined shit from back in the day when everybody was destroying their vocal chords lmao. Now everybody has to have the right technique and do it properly, which I feel like has made for much less unique sounding singers tbh. That may be kind of a hard take, but it's something I have been pondering for a while.

I always like their brand of death metal, there’s a lot of fun in it, SFU got me into death metal and then I went down the gauntlet of blast beat and riff salad bands which are awesome but so many sound the same, I think SFU have their own voice in the genre which is difficult to achieve I have discovered over the years, as for Barnes voice? He was a pioneer of guttural vocals and to me didn’t find his own voice until CCs the bleeding, and in SFU, he is definitely an acquired taste, like chino of deftones or serj of soad he is different, which is a good thing, tho it’s hit and miss in the death metal community! All I can say is his voice is instantly recognizable and proper technique or not who cares

I have been a CC fan over 20 years, and even though I like a couple SFU songs, for the most part i feel like the song writing was just never there. Back in the late 90s we called this sub genre groove death. We had too much respect for chris because of CC to call SFU nu metal, especially when you consider what sepultura did with their evolution. I really can not stand the "EEEEEEEE" screams. I liked maybe 2 of the cover songs, and i expected much better out of the Ola Englund era. In 2024 Chris's voice is done. I set the bar so low that the first single from the new SFU actually didnt sound bad to my ear, but upon hearing a bit more of the album, the permanent damage to chris's voice becomes more and more evident. Lycanthropy will always be the best song and always be a banger. I remember my buddies band in highschool used to cover that song along with with Pantera Walk lol

Great Video but I have to step in and do a little defense for SFU. SFU was my first real Death Metal Band I listened to, (13 was the album) and aside of some other Bands like, In Flames, Soilwork or Kataklysm, this was pretty good Gateway into the Genre because, most people when starting out with Metal, need to get used to the Vocals. But for me it was the other way around. I had a Problem with the Music of most regular Death Metal Bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide and so on. For example. When I listened to Cannibal Corpse, because I heard the Name and the reputation, I didn't get it. I listened to the Album Vile and I thought it sucked. Not because of the Vocals. But because of the Music. The constant changes in Tempo, the non existent (or at the time to me at least) Song Structure. The weird Riffs and Melodies that stray so far to the Bands I listened to at the Time (Motörhead, Manowar, Linkin Park, Disturbed, yeah weird mix) so to me a Band like SFU was a great way to get in because they were very groovy, very basic but they still had some elements of CC and the others. So after listening to SFU or Debauchery for like a year, the next Time I listened to CC (the Album Kill) they became my favorite Band. BTW. If you want a good laugh try Debauchery, I beg you. If you thought Six Feet Under was memeable you haven't listened to Debauchery. It's a German Band, the first Albums very similar to SFU, but later on they very much became a Hard Rock Band with Double Kick Drums and and Growls and like nine million side projects that are essentially the same thing. Just imagine, a Mix of AC/DC, Rammstein (with english lyrics that are so insanly dumb and over the top it almost hurts) and Six Feet Under. Song reconmendation .... *breathes in* *hold on for an absolute epic reveal*... "Blow Job Barbie" .... I'm not fucking kidding.

The weird thing about 6FU is that it's literally a supergroup, but they bring nothing new or innovative to the table. I mean it makes sense... if they had awesome ideas, they would bring them to their full-time bands (Obituary, CC etc.) rather than toss them at this project.

as mentioned in my last comment on the previous video I agree Undead and Unborn are great. Unborn being a bit better than undead. I never really tried the Graveyard Classics albums, but I like True Carnage and Bringer of Blood. I think you were too harsh on them in my opinion (Bringer of Blood has good artwork in my opinion). I enjoy everything up to Crypt of the Devil. I think they're all mostly good up to that point. Nightmares of the Decomposed was bad but the two new songs sounds fine, not great lyrically but his voice is back in killing for revenge. Just my opinion with the band but I feel like people shit on them way too much. Chris may be an ass but I like his vocals personally. I haven't really listened to warpath or death rituals fully though. I really like Haunted, Bringer of Blood, Commandment. I love True Carnage and Unborn. People just need to stop the meme hate. They aren't that bad. Lastly, I think it would be interesting to do a deep dive into Gnaw Their Tongues. I wanna see what your reaction would be to it.

I like SFU. I like everything they've done and I never understood the hatred. I guess Chris can be annoying (he blocked me too, on twitter, because I wrote that I like Gatecreeper), but who cares. Music is what matters to me. And groovy old-school DM is a great sound. Death n' Roll is, as well. And i hear no nu-metal on any SFU release. I love how people over-analyze DM vocals, as it if was Opera. Get real. As long as it conveys the HORROR, DEATHSTENCH vibe, it's fine with me. New album is killer btw. Ciao.
