I Like Fun: They Might Be Giants | John Linnell & John Flansburgh | Talks at Google
For over thirty years, two-time Grammy Award winners They Might Be Giants (John Linnell and John Flansburgh) have been releasing one-of-a-kind music that spans indie rock, children's music, television soundtracks, and more. "The Johns" come to Google to discuss their 20th studio album, I Like Fun, as well as 2018's revival of the band's now-legendary Dial-a-Song service, which fans can call to hear a new track every week of the year.

It's been a really long time since I've seen them in anything, so they look older than they've ever been and now they're even older.

I just saw their show in DC (that was postponed several times since 2020), and they are still great fun in concert. Yeah, they look older, but being their age, I shouldn't comment on that. Their live shows that I've attended since 1992 have always been filled with great music, banter and surprises.

my love of them goes back to 1985 // As your body floats down third street With the burn-smell factory closing up Yes it's sad to say you will romanticize All the things you've known before It was not not not so great It was not not not so great And as you take a bath in that beaten path There's a pounding at the door Well it's a mighty zombie talking of some love and posterity He says "the good old days never say good-bye If you keep this in your mind: You need some lo-lo-loving arms You need some lo-lo-loving arms" And as you fall from grace the only words you say are Put your hand inside the puppet head Put your hand inside the puppet head Put your hand inside Put your hand inside Put your hand inside the puppet head I had to pull my car over and wait to write down the name of the band ! Thank you college radio !

This is hilarious. Take one of the coolest bands ever, the most witty and punny, and put them in front of a bunch of humorless computer nerds. I'm in Silicon Valley myself and the culture here is one of knowing tons about some narrow field and having to have jokes explained to you.

I found this video because I was really mad that I couldn't find my They Might Be Giants shirt that I've had for 20 years. I put it away somewhere. It has a little picture of a snowman warming his hands over a pile of burning money. The neck was always a little snug. It's in a box somewhere with my favorite skull shirt.

Back in the nineties ringing Dialiasong was very personal. Social media is, paradoxically, highly impersonal.
Been binging on TMBG for a week now, after a nearly 30 year absence-so much I've missed out on that it's so exciting to be catching up with so much 'new' music. Yes!

Join Us and Nanobots are great recent albums.
Holy shit, I never would have guessed the patented John Flansburgh staccato came about as a way to circumvent the automatic rewind on a tape machine.
I was in the front row singing Hey Mr. DJ, I love that song, so glad you played it. You played everything I wanted to hear except You're on Fire! Loved it.
I love TMBG, but all I see is Flansburgh's amazing sweater. #allworkandnoplay

Me too. I actually read about the whole situation on the TMBW wiki as it was happening, and I've never forgotten those songs. At first they said they'd release them eventually. Then a few months later they basically said they would never release them. Really depressing.

I thought it was beautiful. You could tell the guy was a bit embarrassed, but to me it underlined a few things that I love about TMBG. #1) They are so insanely genious and diverse that it's impossible to classify them. So they have remained somewhat obscure, though very successful. #2) Once They get into your head, it's impossible to get them out. When Flood came out, I was a teenage metalhead... but I had to have that album. I bought it and I still play the same CD today. They and Primus really opened my mind to what music can be when you use your imagination. #3) After all this time, John didn't big-time that guy. He was humble, polite and made time for him in the middle of an interview. That's class that you just don't see out of people these days. Peace!

I was introduced to TNBG by MTV back when it was what it said it was (wow, I am so old). I have always enjoyed their stuff, but ”Flood,” come on, it is what they will be remembered for. Love the Tiny Tunes “videos” of the classics from Flood. Glad “Dial-a-Song,” is back. Awesome band for those who's musical vision is not only “left of center,” but cross-eyed and dyslexic, with a slight astigmatism on the right. I am glad they survived their original success. (The Kubrick cardigan was a nice touch.)
Ironically the 1st CD I ever bought was They Might Be Giants and I needed to buy my first CD player to listen to it.
One day TMBG will be old before they die...the best they could hope for.
The best video catalog of ANY BAND EVER!
TMBG seem really nice to humor this "Talks at Google" format
Love these guys!
Commercials, kids music, theme songs, a devoted following, Dial-a-Song, the Instant Fan Club... They are for sure a lifestyle band! Despite what John L may say 🙃17:40
Very interesting talk with more interesting questions by the audience.
happy tune, dark dark messages..... that's how they roll.
Self Called Nowhere!!!! FINALLY my fave
Can’t wait for the Seattle show!! #wootwoot!
I'd like to see the resurgence of town crier as means to get news. I worked downtown Portland for years, there are plenty of people going around yelling the strangest shit for free. You could re introduce a job creating industry. That'd be an awesome way to hear about new bands, I'm sure some could even hit a note or two adequately to sample tracks.
Excellent discussion!
a self called nowhere - awesome it's back in the live mess! killer tune.
Saw the show this past weekend. Kurt on horns made the show amazing.

Flansy's Overlook Hotel carpet pattern cardigan!
My first TMBG song was "Experimental Film" which I found because I had this idea I'd get a movie camera and interview weird people, sort of like a warped Huell Howser so I was looking at how to do this. And well, it turns out that unless you're rich you can't do things like that - I can't afford the bandwidth to upload to here at all. But "Experimental Film" got me into TMBG and also into the Homestar Runner universe.

20:00 Have you forgotten the “No!” CD?

I didn't know TMBG did the Daily Show theme. Though to be fair, I haven't watched much of The Daily Show, it's mostly been clips, so I've only vaguely heard the theme / motif of the intro.
