Barry was a douche, but Ray was the worst. I always laugh every time he asks if Julie is ok, after Barry brutalized her. I mean, it’s your girlfriend! But I guess self centered characters like these, appeal more to today audience...

@@mightybitchy Julie's character had remorse and was the one pushing them to look into it, but she didn't really "do" much, though that's not a surprise in these types of movies. Julie's life was the most affected by her guilt. Yea, Helen went to NYC and failed, but that happens to almost everyone who goes there to be an actor. But SMG brought more to her character. Much more charisma. Possibly the fault of the writers for giving Julie's character not much to do beyond look sad, blink a lot, and scream.

This is one of the most underrated slashers ever. Constantly compared to Scream even though they have absolutely nothing in common whatsoever. From an atmosphere standpoint, the movie is so successful at being ominous, constantly and the blue lighting throughout reminds me of Halloween. The setting and fisherman town creates such a unique time and place. Last Summer is not a knock off. It has literally no similarities. It’s more 80s in style than anything. Helens chase scene is the best chase scene of all time. I do think this is a great film. I never hear a single solitary argument for why it isn’t. People just say it’s a ripoff and I’m like what??? Last Summer was written but the writer of Scream but they feel completely different and Williamson was going for something entirely different.

Julie's character is indeed uninteresting and Freddie Prinze Jr acts... Poorly. So, the leads steal our attention while Barry's vulnerability arc never fully completes and Helen gets an undeserved death (reminds me of Suspiria in that sense). I mean, it's a wasted opportunity, but the pieces that work, they work greatly.

  • @JamieRushing27

@@nitehunter91 I also disagree that Julie was a bad character. The film needs a guilt ridden character. I do agree she’s far less likable. I’d be crazy if anyone but Helen was my favorite character. It Julie is critical and I feel JLH did a fantastic job with what she was challenged to do. I would also agree that I’d have preferred Helen and Barry lead. That’s def a criticism I can accept and agree with. But the film still needed Julie and FPJ was perfectly fine. A bit bland, absolutely. But not a bad performance by any means. We can prob just not keep the chat going since we won’t really agree. But PS - Scream is literally perfect and the best acting I’ve ever seen in a slasher. Like wtf kind of comment is that. No one will ever agree with that statement

I had forgotten how high a production this was, there were a lot of very well lit night scenes (although I think they could've done a lot better these days with low light performing digital cameras). Yeah the production values strike you right away. The smooth camerawork, the crane and helicopter shots, it gives it this really nice sense of scope and scale. The film looks great in HD on blu ray. The locations, the cast, the blue at night, its a really good looking film. I love Halloween and Friday the 13th but they are low budget, with the grainy look, mostly tripod or handheld, they feel a bit grindhouse, it's rare to get a slasher done on this budget.

I think Williamson is really good at thinking about what happens to characters after the trauma of a horror movie's events. I think IKWYDLS and Scream both captured those feelings and consequences best in the early sequels, which I'd like to see done better in more thrilling horror flicks.

Williamson in fact knows how to write about youth and for them without being cheesy or redundant, that's why he was too spotted at that time. It's his siganture and best qualities as a writer that no other had when both movies were released. That's why Dawson's Creek was a very successful coming of age drama.

I remember having debates between the similarities and differences with Christopher Pike's Teen Thriller books and RL Stine's Fear Street Series back in the days. I always thought Christopher Pike went for more violence ,had gore and grit that was more mature in its writing. He would go into otherworldly themes and scopes whereas RL Stine was more horror teen scare but both were great in their own approach to what they brought to the table.

A bunch of us decided to count all the urban legends used in the film. There are over 20! You have to pay attention to lots of background dialogue to see some of them but I love the attention to detail in that film. Also, it's one of the few slashers with a female villain.

Man, the nostalgia. I remember that whole Kevin Williamson era of slashers. For some reason i was always a lil underwhelmed by the killers visual appearance in this. The most memorable thing about the movie is prime Hewitt twirling around calling out to the killer in frustration. Incredibly spoofable material. Definitely a step (or 3) down from Scream, but if you're gonna watch a ton of slashers this month, it wouldn't hurt to make this one of them.

Here at my base, we are doing a slasher movie theme every weekend and he keeps reviewing movies that we're watching. Also, I love this movie. 2:25 “because of that I find myself enjoying a lot of films from that time now that we’re considered at one point bad” I know exactly what you mean about going back to old films that at the time we’re poorly received. For some reason I have been doing that with old superhero movies. It’s really interesting to see the 2000s superhero genre and how it started to get more popular before the explosion with the MCU. One of my favorite superhero movies right now is ang Lee’s Hulk (2003) partially yes for nostalgia and a bit of a guilty pleasure but I actually really enjoy what he tried to do with that movies psychology behind Banners development into the hulk. Anyway getting off topic here, just wanted to point out and say lately that’s something I’ve also been doing Chris Stuckmann!

IKWYDLS was still fresh when released during the 90s slasher revival. Kevin Williamson was at the top list and I think the movie was released in the very right moment. I like it a lot too. It has a darker atmosphere and the cast did a pretty good job, even J. Love Hewitt, despite the fact that her character is, like you said, pretty much useless. Kevin did slip on that after creating Sydney, which became a reference in the genre for obvious reasons. At the same time I feel that he did maintain all those cliche and stereotyped elements on purpose to Jen's character. Well, who knows! And I might be wrong, but I think I read somewhere that IKWYDLS was one of Kevin's first screanplays, snubbed by all studios, and they only green lighted it after Scream success and pre-production started immediately after that. And I agree about Sarah and her sequence, very good indeed. After Scream 2, a movie magazine in Brazil wrote a front page article about why Sarah Michelle Gellar was being considered a promising next gen movie actress, the name of that article was "SCREAM QUEEN", it was very interesting in fact. And they were not wrong... She nailed in Cruel Intentions and in The Grudge after that, even though the movie itself isn't that good. A shame that Hollywood turned its back on her as it did happen so early on.
