The fox body Mustang took the world by storm in 1979 and are probably even more popular today. Something about those boxy little Mustangs just talks to us but let's be honest, when it comes down to it, they are not great cars. We love them so much we overlook all their flaws, and if you own one, you know what I am talking about!

I for 1, do not think Ford Foxbody Mustangs suck!, I think they’re the best cars 🚙 ever and would love 💕 to own a dozen of them.😎😎😎😎😎
My stock mustang with gears went mid 13s lol seems pretty quick to me
Lol, foxbody mustangs suck because when you have one, you want MORE and all the aftermarket goodies available for it!! I love my notchback,AND YES, it’s sucks I can’t have many more, especially the rare ones…(imo):) Ty for sharing
I've been around foxbodies all my life and never really had all the problems people claim to have with these cars. Like anything else you have to take care of them and they'll last forever. Any car can suck If you beat the piss out of it and don't take care of it. JMO

I agreee mine has 289000 miles very dependable owned 28 yrs its a 89 fox conv 5.o.. love it
I had an 87 and used to take out Corvettes at will back then.
The only thing that really sucks about them is the once cheap fun cars got the attention of flippers so now even a rotted cut up shit box has stupid asking prices and the parts prices keep climbing. Rest of it is pretty easily fixed if you worked on them long enough. one off the last KISS built cars that is dead simple to work on and keep on the road, I'll keep the one I had for the last 26 years but there no longer the cheap toys to buy, fix up have fun, sell and end up with another one a few months later. For the asking prices these day, nope s550 is a way better toy.

I agree, I’m in the south and a GT foxbody here if it’s still running has 20 edelbroch, holley , bad boy club, stickers , a 4 inch raised hood, huge rear wheels , skinny front wheels, and 10 gauges plastered and duct taped around the dash.

Agree with a lot of this but I've never heard of the door handle issue. Maybe I'm lucky. I've owned my '83 GT since 1990. It has over 250,000 miles on it and my handles still work perfectly!

I've owned my 89 5.o.28 yrs conv love it 289000 miles still runs strong and starts everytime
I think 79to 82 and 85 86 were by far the best looking mustangs of the fox days
I was concerned about the subject at hand as I used an 89 fox body donor engine for my 65 fastback, come to find out he didn't mention any issues with the 5.0 engine so Im feeling better about my decision, I did add HP to the 5.0 though with AFR heads, headers, mild cam, and roller rockers should make it fun.
As an original owner of a 1992 Mustang GT, my single biggest criticism would be the over-boosted, loose steering feel. Not exactly confidence inspiring!
It’s funny you mention the door handles, LMR is realeasing their new design soon. Saw a video on it that came out…yesterday? Day before?
I had to LOL at this video because I agree with all of it! My 87 LX 5.0 I had new was a crap build and so is the 1990 7-up I have now. But boy they are great, fun cars and you'll never find anything else like them! Every time I drive my 7-up it puts a big smile on my face. That said, I remember my 5.0 feeling fast as hell back in the day and now I'm like "I don't remember them being this slow" because my electric Audi is WAY faster than my 5.0!
13 seconds in a 1/4 is fast ngl
Both me and my brother are over 6’ and 200lbs, and the driver seat was first thing to start leaning within a month of buying the 91 we had.
Yeah, but............what I liked most about my 1986 GT was the rear seat room was comfortable for two adults to ride from San Diego to Las Vegas in the rear seat, and the liftback design made a very useful cargo hauler. Took the GT on many camping trips and in really bad weather my wife and I slept in the back with the rear seats folded. With the 5 speed manual it got 25 mpg on regular and I thought 200 hp was great.
The foxbody is no longer simply a mustang. It has become a blank canvas for performance. As much as you may not like it, the foxbody is always the answer in the end.
Love those new door handles and my original ones on my 93 still work fine. I lift them gently sooo. Hate the bag wheel and I'm going to put a momo on mine eventually.
“Your mom goes to college…” -Kip Dynamite
I loved my 93 GT. But yes it had issues. Even had a custom drive shaft made for it replaced everything in the suspension and still got vibrations at 110+ mph. But I was pleasantly surprised even at 120k miles on the original motor still made 215hp/275lb ft at the wheels before I started modding. That 5.0 HO was strong.
I’ve restored All of them for 22 years. They’re by far not the worst built. The 60s mustang are not as fast unless you have a 4 speed 390 or 428. Or a Shelby model. Mustang 2s and convertible. Sure. But who on earth wants either of those . Fox coupe.
Hilarious! I've saved a half dozen of these over the last several years and just finished a major restoration on an 85. This video is so accurate. I sell them, swear to never buy another and then boom one appears in my garage. Currently restoring an 84 GT350 that has every problem in the book. But a Fox with the right high effort rack, basic suspension upgrades (Eibach Pro's) and at least a set of GT40P's and E cam is such a fun car to tool around in. Just don't forget the Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Crue.

Absolutely the same here!! Buy one, remember all the things fox body, sell it, miss it, repeat! lol
Gave us a list of most common problems lol thanks... just got my second fuel pump from you guys
I had a 93GT convertible, 93 LX 5.0 Hatch and a 91GT I nicknamed the slug as it was an AOD. I put subframe connectors on the convertible also had BBK headers, off road h pipe, flowmaster mufflers, tremec 5spd, 3.73 rear gears, larger throttle body, larger mass air, k&n cone filter, 24 lb injectors, phenolic spacer, hurst short shifter. It’s best at the drag strip was 13.95 @ 107 but so much fun. Didn’t mod the other two except the LX had 3.55 rear gear and k&n filter. My 2020 Mustang EcoBoost would blow them all away.
The Fox was mainly sold to the public with the idea to get their hands on an average cheap affordable racing car with you upgrading it at your paste if you wanted to make it go faster.

Get the metal door handle
I grew up in the fox body era but, I only desire Mustangs from 1965-1973 era, modern coyote 5.0 2018 and up. The fox body 1979-1993 and the rounded body style from 1994-2004 never impressed me at all.
Ah…these things “add character “. 😂. Can we get an honorable mention for rear drum brakes too?
Now comparin it to today, cant b done, back then it was the bees knees, how do i no cause i bought them from factory
Facts!!..Except the slow part, we were outrunning Vettes and Trans Ams, Turbo cars and all here in Tampa Fl during the 80s and 90s. Those werent all slow cars I just mentioned..Great channel!
Foxbody are good fir efi swaps in classic mustang like I did to my 69 fastback. Plus foxbody are good candidates for newer engine swaps like a coyote or ecoboost swap which I did to my 92 coupe
if you need a good exterior door handle check out LMR. They have a stainless steel one you can paint or leave it mill finish.
I'm the original owner of my '91 ragtop and I've said the same thing for a lot of years. When you get right down to it, these cars do kind of suck. However, I love mine to death and will never get rid of it. In spite of all the short comings, and there are plenty, it's just so damn much fun. Put the top down, take a drive to the beach and you couldn't take the smile off my face with plastic surgery. Look at it this way, a foxbody is still way better than any contemporary car that came out of England!
Everyone loves these cars now! You see more LS swapped foxes than 3rd gen Camaros
Only 4 things that suck on foxbodys.... torque boxes, strut towers, ash tray and those 4 cats from the factory other than that I think they’re perfect atleast that’s me anyway
You can make them vary fast
Ouch. Tilt steering would've been nice replacing my throttle cable. It's like getting an MRI to get in the floor and change the cable. No room. I had to totally reposition every time i needed a different tool or to move my hand to different position.
The real use for a convertible Fox Body is to make a speedster out of it. Roofs are for fools.
No tilt in the mustang but tilt with same exact steering wheel on 90 to 93 Lincoln mark vii
My biggest complaint about the foxbody is the rattling noises. Other than that, I love my 92 GT even though it drives me insane. 😂 ❤
@ajedgar1
Жыл бұрын
100% agree. I spend half my time in my 93 GT tracking down a variety of rattles. Dash, rear seats, hatch, etc. My wife is tired of me asking her to sit in the back while I drive so she can tell me where the rattle is coming from. However I'll never sell my Fox, love that car!
You forgot to mention the Ignition switch and the PIP sensor, they can leave you stranded at any moment.

I have owned 4 of them (2x79, 86, 93). Fun cars, but yes, poorly built. Basically a Fairmont. There I said it. My current S197 and S550 cars are soooo much better in every way. Still would like a 93 Cobra for the collection though.

I would have never guess a 2022 car is better than a 80’s or 90’s car! Thank you so much for the information
No arguments on the sucky bits, despite my adoration of the 2 Foxbody GTs (1989 Hatchback & 1990 Convertible) in our stable. Not a month after acquiring the '90, we added braces to shore it up, which made all the difference in the world. Highly recommend! The center console replacement was a lesser but likewise game-changer. Otherwise, she's gorgeous as is, save a few needed maintenance items (egads, weatherstripping), a wonderful driver with just enough vroom to make me smile every time I wake her up. She gets tons of comments when I take her to the school. Foxbody Mustangs seem to be quite popular with the teenaged set in this area, which brings me to the hatchback. The '89 has been under restoration and just got out of paint. Purchased for my son (now 19) as a workable project for his senior year, he's got his all-black-over-scarlet dream car in the works, and that with an engine that had been stroked by a previous owner. He'd initially wanted a 1992 Civic sleeper, like my husband and I would buy that. 🤨 The moment we showed him the '89 GT for sale, even in its then-unhappy condition, he was all in--and in love when he heard the engine for the first time. He's going to classes at the track with my husband this spring, so that Fox will get braces soon, too. The door handles were the first to get yanked, and we fixed the seats (though he's a lean kid) during the reupholstering. All the other apologies are slowly being fixed, too, as we lego the whole thing back together. It's been the perfect father-son project. So, yes, the Foxes have needed a little extra love despite being otherwise quite drivable; we've had to overlook some flaws, and indeed, the rest of our stable are 64.5 to 67s. Still, the appeal of those boxy rollers remain. Fox Body Mustangs were new when I was a teenager and young adult, so they're a big part of my first love for a cool driver with a kick, and always will be.

I have a 65 Fastback but pre-COVID it was the Fox I took to the mall or the movies or whatever. If I take the 65 to a restaurant I want a window seat. Of course now Fox prices are rising but it used to be a good solution for not having to drive a boring modern car.
Hey...my mom had a 1980 mustang Ghia. Anybody remember that? 😂
I mean true, but what car in the latter part of the 70s and most of the 80s didn't suck period lol
How well built was any 1980ish-1990ish Ford? How many 1987 Ford Taurus’ or Thunderbirds still survive?
They're not bad but I like them
Ok,kinda. I saw a PRISTINE 93 Cobra a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous.
275hp in '65, close to the same as 200hp in the '80s. Back east in the winter, what doesn't rust? 3 Foxes so far, no broken door handles so far, one window broken (car prowl).
I had one winter when both door handles snapped and had to get in through the hatch
I had a '79 coupe 4cyl when I was 16 and hated it. It was nothing but problems. I got an '83 hatchback v6 when I was 18 and it was much better, had it four years before I got tired and sold it. Now I wish I had kept it. Currently trying to revive a base 2003 that was absolutely butchered.
Damn man I used to like this car , thanks but now Idk about getting one , what car would you recommend instead
Got to get the metal door handles factory ones are plastic that’s why they break they become Brittle in weather and due to age. Ford should have made them metal from the factory
Almost everything you said applies to most cars made in that era. Not a good time period for American cars.
Still wanna buy one, just can't find a reasonably priced one.
What’s cars don’t have issues?
I am the proud owner an 87 LX 5.0 5 speed Coupe . The first moment I drove the car I was enamored with the car. Have been tinkering for 33 years with it and still amazed with the car. The truth is that the quality of this cars leave a lot to be desired. Truly they are a piece of shit, but still I love it 😂
Do the new edge next

I've owned my 79 mustang for over 20 years and I've never replaced an exterior door handle.
And the newer stangs are put together even worse.
I imported a 1990 GT convertible to the UK in 1993. Immaculate condition, 10k miles. Even for then it was pretty bad though. Sounded good, looked ok for the time, which I why I bought it. but it was so bloody slow, I was out dragged by ordinary 2 litre cars, brakes were terrible and the body twist was so bad I initially thought it was 2 cars welded together, lol.

I never had to tilt a wheel to get in or out.
Despite all the problems foxbodys have I'd still rather have a fox than a 2023 mustang much easier to work on and not filled with electronics mine doesn't make a lot of power yet but I have my 2011 5.0 daily driver to fill that void but even stock I still enjoy driving my foxbody
LMR sells a new design door handle for the Fox now
Just picked up a 86 last year with 37k original. Motor was siezed. Put a nice brand new 306,t-5 setup and put gears and chromo shafts in the 8.8. Have the car on a 28" radial right now. Ill be happy with a 13.5 second 1/4 mile for this 30 year old car with 250 hp. If i wanted to run 10s i would just put more power into it and upgrade the suspension. Yes 30 years ago they were slow. But everything was back then? What about the 305 cameros? DOGS .. this video is somewhat accurate but look at what foxbodys are doing now a days.
Door HANDLE? My whole entire ACTUAL DOOR fell off!! 😂
they should really be selling for a quarter of what they are selling for today.

All so true and so sad cuz we love these cars cuz they're still fun and pretty badass we got to admit it for as little horsepower as they have a few bolts ons you can make them get up and go still nothing to today's standards but you put a 16 17 year old kid in one they wrap it around a pole now you have a thousand horsepower factory cars and it's even worse they kill themselves or somebody else because they can't handle it I mean the average car is 500 horsepower pretty much out of the factory nowadays or better... The door handle thing on the other hand I don't know if you guys have seen LMR new Fox body billet door handles but they're pretty slick and definitely going to hold up it looks like they're just a bit on the pricey side...
"Snap a door handle every winter".... absolute BS! I daily drove two different 2.3s over a 4 year time period and never broke a door handle. I had the doors freeze shut, but not snapped a door handle.

I just hate that mid 80's to early 90's plasticky interior design/texture. Not just Fox Mustangs but all makes and models in that time period. Just faded plastic looking junk. I can see the cracked yellow stained plastic interior trim and smell the cigarettes just thinking about it.
