The colonists were ready to tear each other apart from the start. The animosity and polarization of today is just about as bad as it always was, you just see more of it and get it amplified by media. The way the founding fathers fought via the press and newspapers under pen names was just as heated as it was today, it just took longer to get around because it was newspaper.
