( www.TFLcar.com ) If you're looking to buy a new Tesla crossover, you have a choice between the older, larger Model X and the newer, smaller Model Y. Both offer over 300 miles of range and mind-bending performance, but what exactly are the differences between the two? To get a sense of what the Model Y Performance is like to live with, we just traded in our year-old Model X for Tesla's newest model.

    Well... I like the center display behind wheel of the X for the driver. I think the only reason Tesla does this with the 3 & Y is it’s easier to manufacture, less parts, more profit. I think they need to put a display back in the center behind wheel, less distraction for driver to glance down at a simple display not cluttered with all the other stuff of the BIG center display.

    Greetings to you, all the way from South Africa: What I truly appreciate about you guys is the fact that you actually buy some of your cars you review, yourselves. Where most other reviewers almost exclusively wait for a vendor to send them a car, or have to request a car from a vendor for review! You guys just go: "We don't have time for that, we'll just buy our own"! That to me is awesome!!! BIG THUMBS UP. And it has the added benefit of giving us some idea of what it might be like to live with such a car, as you guys have the freedom to do what normal people would do with their own cars. Like the time Tommy accidentally "slightly crushed" the right rear side (I believe it was) of your Model 3 and what the actual experience was like to get it repaired or that time when you tried to tow the camper trailer with the Model-X from Colorado to Portland and it soon became clear that it can be quite a frustration with an EV when towing over longer distances, especially within a limited time frame. THAT is something you hardly find anywhere else. Double Big thumbs up! (Although, as a family man and a father of 2 young ones, I'd rather stick with the black seats for now) - Now we just need Tesla to begin investing in (South) Africa, otherwise VW will take the EV marked this side of the Atlantic with their ID3. Not that the marked is big here, but that is mostly because we don't have any EV options and a lack of charging infrastructure, of course. But here are quite a few people in SA who'd go for an EV if they could. Anyways, Can't wait to see more content from TFL about the Model-Y, like: first driving impressions, some drag and track tests, the test up that mountain pass that you do with EV's and of course all the other real-world applications that cars are normally also used for like towing, re-fuelling (emm, I meant: re-charging), etc... Can't wait - Keep it up guys! Love this channel!

    Tesla won't do well in South Africa. They'll cost way too much like all cars that come to SA. Plus VW has a cult following in SA and most parts of Africa and Europe actually. Jaguar has their iPACE here and Porsche just added the Taycan. No one will take a model 3 over a C Class or 3 series. There are some fast chargers but very few. But you are able to drive an iPACE from Joburg to Durban because there's a fast charger in Harrismith or Ladysmith. Tesla is very overrated. They can keep it in the US. When I went to Germany I actually drove a model s. Not a great car for the price. Certainly not luxury just very expensive.

    I’m always confused when people make excuses for Tesla quality issues. If you’re paying 65,000 to 150,000 for a car, there should be zero quality control issues. They were just given a very poor rating in quality from a major reviewer.

  • @ColinFox

    @ColinFox

    Because Tesla's "quality issues" are overblown. I have a 2013 model S that's basically still as-new. I've only had to do a little on it in the last 7 years. It's the most reliable & efficient car I've ever had, and I've had Honda, Ford, Mazda, BMW & Land Rover. No comparison - my car is head and shoulders above the rest. Tesla haters just amplify one reported issue in an echo chamber to make it look like some kind of epidemic.

    Performance trim is overkill IMO unless you're genuinely planning on taking it on the track. I test drove both and even actively trying to take advantage by flooring from a 30 mph on-ramp to a 85 MPH highway, the AWD model is fast enough that I had to hold back as I'd nearly instantly be going faster than the merge lane. Also, 3 out of 4 wheels on the performance one were chipped due to the profile, and it felt less smooth on the road. Having said all of that, I still 100% understand the appeal of wanting the extra acceleration, but I'd strongly advise anyone considering it to drive the non-performance first and then ask themselves if it needs extra speed for $10k. Really though, it just depends on whether "fast enough" is fast enough for you.

    WTF?! "A vibration in the suspension and a door seal fell off." Flawless. . It's just the water, bug, wind, heat, and air conditioning affecting door seal and the actual safety of the drive train. No big. If this was a Hyundai or Mazda you wouldn't say that. Why do people keep making excuses for Tesla's horrible quality control?

    You can't leave your key card at home, keep it in your wallet. Phones run out of juice but that's not the only time it might not work. A few weeks ago after an update the car didn't recognize my phone. I was able to get into the car with the app but I couldn't start it without the key card. A reboot of both the phone and the car fixed it, don't know if it was a Tesla problem or a Pixel problem but because I had my key in my wallet I could start the car.

    @John Edwards it wasn't deemed totaled. Supercharging is still active as well as autopilot. I did my research before buying. The previous owner lost a family member and the car wasn't being used. The hail damage happened when the car was parked outside around the time of their passing. The insurance covered the cost of the body work. They wanted to get rid of it for emotional reasons and were will to take a lose on the cost.. I didn't know them personally, but still felt bad about the situation. I took their original price and didn't attempt to bargain at all. I knew it was a cheap price

    I still don't get why monthly cost, effectively a $1500/mo 1yr lease, is so high given so many talk about string residual values. You could instead spend $800/mo for a Lexus hybrid and then write a check to buy $8000 of carbon credits and still be ahead. Sort of an arbitrage on clean cars and the environment. Economically a high enough price of a Tesla at say 115mpge vs a hybrid at 35mpg creates a subsidy to reduce or clean up that incremental environmental hit.

    @@dvwatts Summon isn't self driving. It's literally the parking sensors moving around spots where it detects an obstacle. Every carmaker can do that. But they don't. Why... Because like YOU said, it is not perfect. That feature caused some incidents which would not have happened if such a half assed feature wasn't unleash on the public who is not ready. Every carmaker has car that can stop at stop signs and recognise traffic lights. But they don't unleash it to the public. Tesla's systems can't even recognise a large stationary object right in front of it and ploughs into it. They are reckless releasing half baked software that doesn't work 100%. Before Roman starts complaining about the complex screen layers and lack of buttons to control the glovebox or typical stalk windshield wiper adjustments, tell him about the amazingly good voice controls. Just hit the right steering wheel thumb wheel and command just about any feature - "open glovebox", "wipers on 2", "read text message", "turn heat down" or "heat driver's seat on 1". Better performing voice control than any car, no safe word like, "Hey Mercedes", or BS like that. I am nicely surprised how well it works and how zero Tesla reviewers comment on it. It works with many phrases, not just ONE COMMAND that you have to remember, it works when my back seat passengers are talking and even with wind noise from an open window! Tesla's one screen for everything with submenus can be a pain until you discover the incredibly good voice controls.
