In most bigger stores like Walmart, etc, that's not even the cashier's job, and they don't get paid enough to deal with that shit anyway...??? People who work in restocking and in the back to sort the items coming in on the truck usually have a supervisor or manager that does a quick "walkthrough" where they check product placement, etc. They're supposed to check for damaged products too, that's their job. (Customer Service, 2.5 / 3 years, with fiancé currently working at a Walmart so don't come for me.)

If you notice something damaged, it needs to go back to the cashier or service desk. I work in claims and we decide how damaged and returned items will either be cvped, donated, or disposed.

Don't set it down if unless it's in your cart! Even if you're thinking about it.. I've noticed some people get interested in what you're looking at just because you're looking at it, they grab it and walk with it and you'll find it somewhere else all together lol

It's such a good idea to buy 2 jars! Because when 2 identical items are placed next to each other, they create a pleasant visual rhythm on the shelf🥰

Always grab a cart on the way in, don’t set anything down unless you’re 100% sure you don’t want it & better flex that lady grip (carrying multiple things in one hand) if you ignore the first rule.

Not even now, did she even have the mind that maybe nobody else should buy this if it is damaged. And for me when she said stole (not applicable by the way) that says enough about this person that I have no trouble believing that she put it back on the shelf. As someone who has worked in a store, it's no big deal to put a defective product back on the shelf. We'll see it anyway. If you can/want to report it, good. If you can’t/don’t want to, that’s okay. Another option is to simply place it in any visible place.

To be fair, that was bad. Regardless of whether she owned it or not, it is not the old lady's decision if one is enough for her or to snatch up something someone is already about to purchase. For the same reason that you don't take someone else's grocery cart to save yourself the hassle of picking out items. You may not be stealing because they don't own it, but it is still rude.
