Almost a pleasure to hear Scotty w/ his "stupid this" and "crappy that". My old man was a mechanic and the things that came out of him were terrifying and at times quite creative- he sort of had a talent for combining obscenities. Especially after a few beers. Venting frustrations by cursing is crucial to the mental health of the mechanic IMHO. Just keep grandma's ears covered.

Alvin Hah Whatever the factory service manual says. Usually adding RTV to a gasket like that is NOT recommended. The stuff can get loose inside the engine, and clog oil passages for one thing. One use for RTV might be to put a very thin bead in the gasket groove in the cam cover, so the gasket stays with the cover. The operative word is THIN.

RTV...which stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing...is a product used to fill voids in any composite to metal gasket surface. Rubber gaskets must "walk" in their designated area of sealing because of expansion and contraction. Using RTV is a typical shadetree mistake. I agree 100%.

I had to take the intake manifold completely off the car just to get to the valve covers. I also had to move the stupid wiring harness out of the way. But, I took my precious time doing it and labeled everything as I removed them - bolts and all. I followed the service manual and torqued everything in order, according to manufacture's specs. I was able to successfully get the job done! Soooo, if I can do it, then so can you! :) And, just so you know, I'm a very feminine woman. :)

The engine covers can prevent dirt from accumulating in the spark plug wells. On the other hand, you cannot easily inspect for gasket leaks. When you remove the valve cover, keep the work area very clean and observe the torque specs when you retighten the bolts to prevent future leaks. I believe there is a recommended tightening sequence as well.

You guy's know what I really love about scotty ? He actually diagnoses and fixes thing's. I've known way to many mechanics ready to slap a part on and pray. Nothin worse than a four hundred dollar repair bill and being told ( hopefully that fixed it ) Seriously though. If it was feasible I would ship my car to scotty and back to me. Yeah it would cost a ton but at least I would know it was fixed. Simply put, We need more Scotty's !
