Welcome to the Upcycle Design Lab. I craft with recycled, repurposed, and unwanted materials. There is a lot of experimenting with trash and recyclables to make them "new" again. If you enjoy reusing, repairing, and re-imagining old items, I hope you will stick around and check out some of my other Upcycling tutorials and join those of us who are rethinking the things we throw away.

I LOVE this!!! I found your channel just this afternoon and have watched several tutorials already. The first one I watched was the original one for this project. I was HOOKED. A regular can opener also works for removing the tops.

Hi thanks for watching. Yes I have used a regular can opener on occasion but sometimes it tears into the side of the can so I prefer the draft top since I have it. You can also remove the tops with sand paper. The video below shows how and also compares all three methods if you are interested. 🙂 kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqOi27OHkr3Jg9Y.htmlsi=lSTVnScWLCYhmS1Z
Yes a regular can opener works
These are awesome. You were making me nervous not having gloves on so you didn't get cut. I'm on to watching another of your videos. Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi Marguerite - I like to live dangerously 🙂🙂🙂 Actually the cans aren't very dangerous but you can get a nasty paper cut from them. Thanks for watching.
I love these great little gifts.

SUGGESTION: Cut the two half pieces to desired size. Put the bottom half in the freezer for 15 minutes. At the same time, put the top half in very hot water. Cold will shrink while hot will expand. When assembled and sitting at room temp, they will be heat-shrunk permanently, huh? How cool is that? Very!

The patina on the ones with the candles in is gorgeous, the copper too. I also liked the addition of the chain. Just one negative point…wayyyy too much talking and preamble which is not needed. Most people who would be interested in making these, don’t need as much advice or pre instructions. Anyone who needs this much detail should not be permitted to handle sharp objects.

Why did you remove the top of the can if you were going to just glue it back on? I'm confused.
@UpcycleDesignLab
8 ай бұрын
Hi the top is still removable. The part that is glued on is just to make the lid look more rounded. 🙂
6:24: "i'm just gonna bend them to a 45 degree angle." .. bends the tabs to 90 degrees. SAKES

Sorry I misspoke.
Polite question … how is this in any way environmentally friendly when you are suggesting all you need is an aerosol spray, two types of glue, a couple of single-purpose gadgets (probably manufactured in China and shipped thousands of miles)? Is this not just greenwashing? And what will be the lifespan of the objects you’re making? There are many more craft projects which are biodegradable and much less harmful to the environment.

Perhaps you don’t recycle in the US as you describe aluminium as ‘trash’?
@UpcycleDesignLab

Hi Jackie - I am not sure I understand your criticism. If you think it is greenwashing that is your prerogative. I am not an environmentalists I am merely a crafter sharing things that can be made from items that are normally discarded.
