Betty, Lorraine, Timmy and Ray all get SSI. Department of Health Services also provides food assistance, medical care, clothing donations, utility assistance and more. They weren't going without. I've actually seen people with food cards eat better than myself. Tyler should have opened their fridge and I noticed that the camera zoomed around so quickly that nobody could see anything. The Whittakers have spent all the money Mark has raised for them (over $100,000) and he's given them his own money at times, don't make shit up.

I paid attention. Betty was asked if Mark had given an *update* not whether or not he'd been giving them *money*. I would imagine that there'd been no house discussions recently as the Whittakers had been draining the funds. Bottom line: Urban and rural areas, blue states and red states, are experiencing the same problems.

As far as the Whittakers go, Mark has sent them thousands upon thousands of $. BJ, Larry's daughter lied to Mark and told him her daddy died (which was a lie) and she needed more money for his funeral. She used it to buy drugs and she put Betty up to lying to Mark about it. BJ admitted what she did. Mark has done so much for them but there are people in their family who take advantage of Mark's kindness.

The Whitakers are not money managers nor have they had access to that amount of money in the past so why would they need $1K here $5k there? The funds donated for the purchase of a home for the Whitakers were squandered away and my guess including the shopping sprees and bowling alley outings that many believed Mark personally funded. That is the real story and real deception we are learning about thanks to Tyler's journalism.

As someone who has lived near Charles Town and Martinsburg my whole life, it depresses me to see how this place has turned. Homelessness in Charles Town has taken a huge turn since the pandemic and Martinsburg is just terrible. I am currently trying to get out of this place ASAP. A lot of the drug problems comes from the heroin highway which comes from Baltimore and stretches to Winchester VA. Harpers Ferry is a beautiful town but get out of the downtown region and you’ll see some very beat down trailers with people you are 90% sure do some form of drugs. TLDR, this place has taken a real turn since i was born in 2007.

I’m from Sterling Virginia but my dad bought a property in Harper’s ferry WV and we go down to Charles town every Saturday and ur right. There’s nothing to do in Charles Town except for the fast food strip passed the Waffle House and driving around the most delapidated houses by the railroads ever. I try to go find things to do over there but the only thing that city is good for is fast food, civil war history, and poverty

Mark has already fixed up the house they are currently living in. You have no idea how bad it was. Bad floors, walls, no insulation, and bad windows. He’s also up front about what they are saving for. However, you must realize it’s their money and if Betty calls and says they need money he has to send them the money. He has taken them to Walmart several times, once to get hair cuts, to visit the family burial site, and for Christmas they even got a tree with decorations. They were all so excited. Mark has been nothing but good to these people. Not just once or twice but many times. He has a special relationship with them. Mark never talked finances with them until he wanted to help fix their current house up that was a disaster. You walked in. Delivered some groceries, and started talking about their Go Fund Me. And then started a new one. I think you over stepped your bounds and you owe Mark an apology. Why didn’t you call him and find out what his plan was and what he has been doing up til now. Where do you think they got the clothes from that they are wearing? And the shoes etc. Mark has plenty of his own money and care and I mean really cares about people. You walk in and try to destroy everything he has built with these folks. A trusting, caring relationship. You owe Mark an apology.

I’ve watched all marks videos on the Whittaker family. Mark has done more for that family than anyone combined. Going places and spending his money. He’s a great friend and I bet husband and father. Stop talking about him when you don’t know the story.

I live about 25-30 minutes away from Huntington, the drug problem is horrible and everybody knows somebody who has been affected from it. You can barely take your kids to Ashland Central Park because it seems every other day, someone's child is finding a needle. Almost every other street you see someone passed out on the sidewalk or passed out in their cars. Seems that no matter where you go, no one is safe from drugs. Edit: my own personal experience was when I was driving my friend and her son back from the park when we saw two little babies running near a busy road, the posted speed is 35, but everyone was flying down the road and there were no parents in sight. Long story short, cops and cps show up and take these two babies, ages 1 and 3. Their parents where passed out with copious amounts of drugs and alcohol in their system. The house had no power and no running water and these babies were filthy with diapers sagging to their knees.

The young guy being interviewed @8:10 says it all. When the oil work moved from WV to PA and OH the workers stayed in WV instead of moving to find work.

I guess you'll be around to help them out when their house disintegrates, as that's why Mark was trying to get something together to get them a safe home to move into. If you had watched his series on the Whitakers you would have known that. He truly cared for them and was so giving to them. You would have known that too if you watched the videos. Too bad you didn't do your homework, Tyler. Not everyone is out to make a buck off someone less fortunate. Well, now you can be the hero...see, Mark didn't need to be the hero, he just did what he did from his heart. You owe Mark and the Whitakers a bigger apology than you will never be able to do. I truly think he was feeling like they were part of his family. Too bad some idiot had to fuck that up....for so many people. I just hope you don't desert them now that you've fucked up what they had...you really should watch the videos to see how their relationship blossomed over time, to see the joy they had when he'd show up and the sincerity of which Mark worked to help them and just to hang out with them.

The gofundme specifically says its for a home. People donated to help provide a home for them. Not to give money to individual family members for their own wants and needs thats unfair to the rest of fhe family. No matter how you look at it those who donated to the gofundme were scammed. They donated under the impression that it was going towards a house. Mark kept giving them money though, because lets face it he knew if he stopped giving them money they would shut him out and he would no longer be able to make money off of them. People who work in the streets with the homeless in LA dont have great things to say about mark. They talk about how they never see him out there giving back to the community he is exploiting. The last section of this video is devastating; knowing the context. This family was getting so much help and love from Mark. He had brought them new clothes; so much food; repairs for their home; cars; and more. I want to be careful to not attack Tyler with personal insults. Tyler; exploited the Whittakers for views and likely a vendetta against Mark after he wouldn’t give away personal details of his interviewees and friends. The claim he was asking where the money was going like everyone else; I have watched most of the Whittakers videos; and I haven’t never; in the comments; seen this question. It is probably there once; just because I know people can be conspiratorial and weird; but I would say that it is not a question he would have got (before this video) on a daily basis. The reason he didn’t reveal every purchase is because that would likely be a barrage of purchases and that is a childish request. In the videos we see him taking them out; buying them food; buying them haircuts; especially in his later content. If anything; the Whittakers have been exploiting Marks kindness. This is not to throw shade on the Whittakers; but just to say that; it was mutually beneficial relationship. They got money and he got views. That should have been all it was; and should have been how it was understood. Tyler; unfortunately, decided to not only find the family. Which Mark actually said was the way he wanted them to be contacted; not through him giving their details. He implicated Mark to Betty; who is developmentally disabled; and so not a good source on information. Never once did Tyler directly ask Mark for the information; but instead asked Betty; who again; is developmentally impaired and wouldn’t know anything about the money. She seems to think money is endless because she didn’t mention; Mark has given them $100,000 in the past 14 months. The moral of this story is don’t call someone out without knowing the facts. Contact them and ask first at least. And don’t use your journey for views be at the expense of someone who actually used his channel to help a poor family. As a native West Virginia it’s extremely sad to see the state characterized this way once again things. it sucks to see our state characterized this way. West Virginia is a really easy target and no new ground is really being broken here. It would’ve been far more interesting to highlight that the whole state isn’t like this. There are plenty of areas in the state that are actually very nice, and especially around Morgantown and Fairmont the cyber security and computer information industries are really starting to boom, and clarksburg has its own fbi field office and nasa field office. Showing off the worst areas of the state and hand picking the worst and most sensational interviews from those places does nothing but rehash hundred year old stereotypes that do nothing but make the problems worse. If you want to do something fresh, truthful, and informational, you should look into the good parts of this beautiful state instead of retreading the bad parts that have been talked about for years at this point. No hate I just wish people would stop focusing on the absolute worst part of the state and show some of the good, there is a reason that no one wants to come here anymore.

This is a prime example of unethical journalism do your research before trying to tarnish others reputation and good deeds.

I’m a Martinsburg native, but itcan be a touchy topic in the area for those with family members that have had problems with drugs.

These poorest areas always like GOP but can’t name one policy that helped them. That is the saddest part. GOP took advantage of them.

I can relate to the woman not wanting to talk about her drug issues. I wouldnt either. Its called anonymity. Also, drove down to Florida from Pittsburgh with family to go visit our family down South and the amount of those "little, forgotten" towns is astounding. Can't help but wonder how many were accidental fires due to drugs.

Born and raised in WV, WV will forever be my home, it about broke my heart when I left, but I had too, I realized it wasn’t a fit place to raise a family. Funny thing is I moved down near the boarder, I work with immigrants in construction, I tell them about WV and show them news reports/photos of the state. Most say it’s exactly like or slightly worse than what they left in central and South America. Yet the rare occasions I visit home, the folks up there refuse to believe it…

My heart is broken for Mark he was the one person who genuinely cared for the Whitaker family and truly enjoyed the time he spent with them even making sure they got out to the fair and family hair cuts and the Whitaker family genuinely enjoyed their time with Mark! The Whitakers are not money managers nor have they had access to that amount of money in the past so why would they need $1K here $5k there? that family isn’t anyone except the governments responsibility and their caretakers. Obviously they shouldn’t be exploited, but if you care so much, why don’t you go out there to banjo-land and completely transform their lives? I bet even with all the money and charity in the world you couldn’t. They are how they are, they seem like they have what they need and are generally content to live how they do and be left alone. Tyler doesn’t actually owe them or anybody anything. All he did was ask where the money that had supposedly been raised for them was. You got your answer because of him.

I’m for helping the family, as they are lovable and endearing. But. I wish a better, less scummy/shady person was in charge of the donations.

Excuse me, but Mark makes frequent trips to the Whitakers and spends a fortune on them! He’s constantly bringing them food, taking them to Walmart to buy anything they want, out for haircuts, dinner, has put a new roof on their home, etc., etc. Right now real estate has increased only because of the fame they’ve received from Mark. Mark is currently in negotiations, but he’s not going to pay $250,000 for a $50,000 house! Know your facts before incriminating the guy.

Mark is the boss, because his reputation precedes him.

Mark Laita should be imprisoned and tried immediately.

my aunt lives in Rivesville WV, another old coal town. If you look up Rivesville power plant, my great aunt lives right up the street up from it.

Mark is a POS. He is vile and disgusting. Why does he have to cut off his “charity”? Because someone asked about it? He could have saved face and leveraged the situation for more benefits to the Whitakers or other poverty stricken people in the community but he does not want the light on himself. He has too much in his closet that he doesn’t want exposure to.

My grandpa was the co founder of PDC Energy in Bridgeport. It was beautiful when I was a kid, its a shame to see what it has become. Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.

I currently live in the town next to martinsburg and martinsburg is my hometown. I see a lot of people talking about the first lady and her not talking about the drug situation. I dont believe she should be slandered for not wanting to talk about that topic because I myself know people who are addicts and it can be a very touchy subject. My brother himself is a drug addict . He has been struggling with addiction for years and if someone came up to me asking about drugs I wouldnt feel very comfortable talking about it either.
