I Hired $5 Logo Designers - This Is What I Got (LOGO ANALYSIS)

5 dollar logo designs, really? Yes that is correct, I hired logo designers for $5 on Fiverr, in fact I hired 2 logo designers for 5 dollars. I am going to show you the logo designs that I received on Fiverr, and deconstruct them from a graphic design point of view.
Have you ever used Fiverr before, maybe as a buyer or a seller? I’d like to hear your thoughts on the platform. I myself haven’t ever used, but I also have never sold a logo design for $5, and never will. I have a pretty strong opinion on this, but I guess each designer has their own hustle, and that’s their call. But personally, I feel it is selling oneself short as a logo designer, and that you should never sell a logo for $5. What are your thoughts of a logo design, or any design for that matter, going for 5 dollars?
The main point of this video though, is to deconstruct and analyse logo designs, in a format that you can actually learn something from. I hope you do find this video useful and interesting, and of course if you do then let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace

Hey Tom, Unfortunately that's what people with $5 budget expect. One thing I've learned is that "cheap" clients don't buy clean and minimal logos, they want swooshes, houses, weird shaped people, letter cutouts and all kinds of unnecessary elements. Sad but true...

This, my favorite time is when I had a client insist that I use Papyrus for their lettering. They didn't know any other fonts outside of the MS word font book and were not interested in looking at alternatives. They are now the third store on main street using Papyrus.

Not true! DesignCrowd is a well organised scam that delivers absolute garbage - if anything at all. I paid $750, expecting to get premium service and all I got for my money was an Indian call center, endless spam emails inviting me to spend more money. Stay away! Designcrowd have gone to great lengths to create bogus review websites. Closer investigation (after I wasted money) revealed the extent of the scam.

As the instructor said, everyone has different perspectives. The country I am living in (PAKISTAN) has a low-quality living standard on average. Thanks to the Corrupt Political Leaders we are trying to get rid of. $5 is $5 for you. But, you will be surprised to know that this is the daily income for most of the Pakistanis. The economy is in poor condition. Unemployment is at a peak right now. So $5 is something MAN!

I would say your "quickly" written brief was shallow. Also, in the website, before you buy the package/gig, they clearly mentions what are the files you will receive. You missed that in a hurry and expected to receive a source file. Only one lesson from this video: You need to be a good buyer to make a good purchase. I also feel like your approach to any logo are very similar. You just add a circle or square on the back and declare those as super pro.

@Jonathan DPG @Jonathan DPG The Facebook logo is the first of its kind, and is memorable because Facebook itself is iconic. Kickstarter - not everyone knows what it is (especially older generations), but the logo is memorable because it’s not a simple “K”, it’s a unique one. Achiever - I have no idea what this is, but I _do_ recognize the logo. This is because this is also not a simple “A”, but a unique one with a star implemented - stars are often associated with achievements. Samsung M series - this is the Samsung brand, and the brand itself built reputation before the “M”, causing everything it releases to be well known. If the same “M” from this logo was in an unknown brand, it would not be remembered. Hinge - again, I don’t know what this is, but I recognize the logo only because of the “HINGE” version of the logo, not the simple “H” version. I would not know it was Hinge if I only saw the “H”, even if it stands out a little. Wish is associated with something everyone has - “wishes”, and the brand is memorable partly for that reason. The logo itself is slightly “lively”, and the “W” has a wing on it - it is not a simple “W”.

They charge you more for the extra files. They explain it in the gig details. It's only $5 cause they don't give you commercial use either. You have to pay extra for all of that. Hi Satori, Ive watched a few of your videos and think you do a great job. I don’t quite agree with some of your points though. I’ve read through the comments here and while I understand you were trying to show what can be improved about the logos delivered. It is not fair to comment on what the designers did or did not deliver as your brief is pretty vague. You do not mention what file formats you would like delivered and if the tagline is required in the final product. These terms are also sometimes outlined in tiers somewhere on the sellers fiverr page which is not noted in the video. I guess my problem is that this video frames fiverr in a bad light. While I don’t advocate for people to seek out design services through fiverr I have had a lot of positive experiences through the site. I also don’t think its fair to say that these designers are unprofessional because they did not deliver something you didn’t ask for. Maybe the lesson here is to make sure you build better briefs prior to working with any sort of external partner even if it is fiverr. Do your research and you can get great results. I hope you don’t take it personal and I look forward to seeing your next logo improvement video! -J

Jon Sorrentino, I feel you man, I do. However, the way I see it is the following: You, as a designer, if the client does not provide details, should dig in to try to find the last bit of useful information you can get to try to align your concept with the business. So, in this two cases, they were not squeezing the client for info. They took whatever was given and worked around it. Big mistake if you ask me. Cheers.

That is unless they did ask and he intentionally left it out of the video. Because anyone who is been on fiverr or ever try to set up an account on forever knows that part of the set up process that it automatically guides you and recommends that you outline your what the client gets for what they pay for as a matter of fact if I’m not mistaken I think you’re going to have to in order to post your services. So the thing is he knew from the moment he chose those people what he was going to get and what he wasn’t going to get. I’m pretty sure that for five dollars they mention what file types he would and would not get which just goes to show that drawing with jazza did this comparison way better because if my memory serves me right he chose a $50 service, $150 service, and a $250 service with the same parameters for all three. Well defined parameters as well. The whole video just reeks I don’t wanna spend more than $10 to prove that he can’t find good designers on firverr which is further further from the truth because I know people that personally use forever all the time and have great experiences.

Great video! I like the whole concept of it and think there are plenty of benefits in it for both designers and people looking to hire a designer. Some of the benefits I noticed are that: 1) We get a good idea of what a $5 logo gets you (design itself and deliverables). 2) Your critique of each logo is fair and comes with insight that other designers can immediately apply to their work. 3) You actually show what a more seasoned or knowledgeable designer would come up with when you redesign each logo. I really like some of the points you make, however, the video as a whole comes off as kind of condescending. First, the brief you made was not a well informed brief. You didn't say what formats you wanted or needed and you didn't say if you wanted the tagline to be incorporated with the logo. Second, you provided nothing of learning value to us viewers. You brought the logo onto the screen and you ripped into it calling out weaknesses instead of opportunities and not in a very helpful way like the second one with the pattern inside the b. Maybe something that would have been more helpful would be "Okay I see where they were going with this and it isn't a terrible design but lets think back to design fundamentals and see what would have worked a bit better" so not much deconstructing going on there more like "this design is bad, im gonna do one in 10 minutes and wow look how much better mine is and in only 10 minutes" Third, you put your logo on the screen but you didn't provide your logo in 3 different sizes the way you did theirs. Personally, I'm not sure your first logo would not have worked at a smaller size because the gray was so light that the tagline would be completely illegible and so would the name. But we'll never know because we only saw it at a larger size. Finally, you didn't show the offerings. You ragged on them for not including files but I don't know anybody that would send all of those files for 5 dollars to a buyer who has no reviews, no past history of success or anything. How do they know you weren't a scammer? Sorry to come across so critical of the video, but it seems as though most of these Fiverr videos are being made to put a designer or artist on blast without them even knowing it. Its like the teacher showing your project to the class and saying "here is what NOT to do" without you even knowing the teacher is doing that. Its kind of embarrassing. Hopefully in the future if you do remake this type of video, you can at least let the artist know their logo is being used as an example on a youtube video of what NOT to do and being deconstructed and compared to another designer in front of 208,000 + viewers. But since you didn't go into licensing and usage rights for Fiverr or if its included in the 5 dollar price, Im not even sure what to do.

You included way to much text and the contrast of the sublines is very low. I recommend some easy testings for crating your own logo. Like contrast, readability, uniqueness and remindability test :) hope I could help.

For how long has it been 'standard practice' to include AI files for free, lol? I would have thought you would always charge like half the logos worth for the AI format. Too much can go wrong by sending an editable logo to a client, if they pay for it then you know they most likely will know how to use it.

I’ve been doing GD for 16 years and NEVER have heard of a completely editable AI file automatically being given!? Ridiculous notion. I do provide a font-outlined EPS, allowing for minimal changes for printing variations. But once a logo is created no one should be playing with it and it’s your creation.

What is the best practice? - Setting measurement units to mm or px? - What width size should be the border around elements in logo to look good on small and bigger sizes? - Is the best practice to start doing logo is making it from small size and then scale to bigger? - What measurement units should I use for logo elements, border, text?

You could say the first guy actually did a good job in being creative. I wouldn't expect to get a finished logo for that price, but some ideas. @@SatoriGraphics Hey Tom, as you know creating anything one line or commenting about anything online it is so easy to have miscommunication in 15 or 20 words. I guess I was a little shocked to find out that you can buy a logo for $5 online and my curiosity was simply should I feel compassion towards somebody working at such an insanely cheap rate and if so then how do I feel about the fact that they are undercutting and exploiting designers higher up the chain trying to scratch a living too? I know you didn't want to get into all this and I really didn't either - I was just simply asking a question where they lived for my own awareness. Your lesson plan was perfect in highlighting their work as what not to do for your own students so don't mistake my question and comment as criticism please!

Great idea for a video. Curious what the turn around time was for the logo? I have little knowledge to how fiverr works but did you put a job on the site and people submitted their proposals? Or did select an account that said they could design a logo for 5 USD? Either way, what was the turn around time, ie. from time to request to time with submitted artwork?

The first logo was probably from a software logo generator. The blue and orange compass circling the pointer had two shades to show depth. I doubt anyone would go through such lengths for $5.00 What I've noticed about the pro designers and the amateurs is that pro designer's images can attract your attention with relevant colors and a simplistic design to describe a business. The amateurs want you throw everything and the kitchen sink in your design with colors that clash most of the time.

That's what you should do. If you used a font that is not in the client's PC, which is the case 99% of the time, illustrator will just look for the most similar font that the system has and use that one instead. This is not good.

Can you request revisions in Fiverr? Most of the time I would make multiple studies so clients would have lot of choices. Then I would make revisions for their comments if there's any. And I would only just send the final artwork (vector files) if they're already okay with it.

There is only two types of people that can be "happy" with $5: designers from very poor countries where money conversion gives them enough money to cover their work time on the logo or a person who does not even need to be a designer and uses logo generator for a quick result and $5 for 5min of "work" is a good deal for them.
