UPS should have and would have noted that the box had been damaged or opened during shipping. To file the claim with UPS DON'T CLICK THAT YOU SHIPPED THROUGH ANOTHER CHANNEL, click that you were the shipper then another option pops up that asks if you did you do it through a third party or another channel and click yes on that. Then you should be able to file your claim.

@@sandikucia1398 A month or two ago, I ordered a 2-Piece 25-Count Clear Card Storage Box two pack. They cost less than $2 and they weigh close to nothing.. They arrived cracked. I ordered replacements, and they had me send them back. I had to stand in line at the UPS store to drop them off to return them, to Amazon. The replacements arrived cracked too. I just kept them. Three years ago, they messed up my purchase of a DeWalt miter saw. It cost over $300. I was supposed to get it in two days with Prime. I didn't get it. I called support and it turned out, Amazon sent it like it wasn't prime. Plus, it was coming from the west coast. It was going to take another week. I asked the guy to just cancel the order. I could buy one at Home Depot for about the same price. He canceled the order and told me that when it does eventually come, to just keep it at no charge. Either it was compensation for the mix up or they didn't want to pay to have it sent back. Either way, I don't think that would happen today. We now have two (2) Amazon distribution centers in my town. They could just have it shipping to one of these local distribution centers.

In my experience when shipping heavy objects you need to use a heavy duty box, or reenforce the box somehow. Otherwise the box can bend, twist and rip. Packing objects very tightly so they don't move around also helps.

As a frequent eBay buyer, I feel you did the right thing as the seller. In a situation like this, the seller should set up a return and then deal with USPS about the issues in shipping. Sellers shouldn’t make buyers deal with insurance claims and whatnot, that’s the sellers responsibility

  • @socalogp7296

Not always true. In example, when tracking shows that the item was delivered and the buyer indicates they did not receive the item, the buyer needs to file a claim with USPS. The seller cannot file a claim as the tracking shows it was delivered to the destination. How do I know? I lived it. 🤦‍♂ ✌

Yeah, if it was packed wrong that is not on the customer. All depends what the listing says and what he got in return. I would be irate as well, considering that usually people ordering tools use them for their job. The job has been probably waiting for that set to come in to complete the job. Been in that buyers position numerous times... I would refund the customer and then as the seller, you need to recoup your money/items from USPS.

I usually give them an option if there are still usable parts they can keep. Like refund 50% (or whatever) and they keep, or 100% and they send back. I always think about the time it’s gonna take for me to even mess with the return. Hopefully they take a partial refund, I still make some money or at least break even, and don’t have to deal with a return.

I always explained to the customer that I know it's an inconvenience but if they want a full refund I always make them return the item. I don't feel bad about losing a little bit of extra money (which goes toward a write-off) to get my item back. Sadly there are too many scammers out there. If the customer complains I just explain it like that. I let them know that while I don't believe they are scamming me, a few bad apples out there now require me to have all refunded items returned first. You could even put that in your policy when you do your listing so there are no surprises, And maybe it wards off would be scammers.

Walmart or Target or Amazon don’t refund without a return and our businesses are as important as those. In the words of Rachel Strickland “treat your business like a business” and a business requires the product to be returned before a refund is given. Good job Dave!

If I'm shipping UPS I always use Pirate Ship because they give you a way to file a UPS claim where eBay doesn't. As far as the refund, I'd have done the same thing. I'll eat the cost of a return before I'll give an item away for free. I don't want to reinforce buyer's getting something for nothing, even if mistakes were made on my end with packing. Shipping companies aren't always careful and we can only do what we can do to protect items.

I base returns on how pleasant the buyer is. If they come off nasty from the start I will definitely make them return it, even if it’s not really worth it to me. I always have them start a return through eBay no matter what. I generate my own return label rather than letting eBay do it. Sometimes eBay’s return label is ridiculously high. If the buyer is pleasant and I choose not to have the them return the item, I tell them to keep it, donate it, or trash it. From what I understand, if a return is started through eBay, negative feedback can’t be given or will be removed.

Hello Mr. Dave. I really don't think the guy was trying to scam you. The item was for threading smaller metal piping that is very common in older homes. It's very possible that he is simply a homeowner that wanted to have the dies for personal use and has no way to modify them to make them fit. If you had dies in there that were not made specifically for that handle they would not work. Honestly, I would be very upset too if I ordered a tool and it had mismatched parts, especially after the box being ripped open in transit and some dies were missing. I have seen the way UPS and FEDEX throw their freight around so I try to avoid using them when possible. If you get it back and ship it again tie the dies to the handle with wire, tape or shrink wrap to keep them from getting lost.

On the theory that I may one day have another damaged package shipped UPS, I'd have taken the time to figure out what their rules are and gone the claim route. Their procedures are tough to decipher, especially with ebay involved, but I don't think that means it's a good plan to let them off the hook when they mess up as it sounds like they did in this case. I know that it's hard for people with ADHD to deal with details like this, but throwing away a good amount of money is never fun.

UPS is not going to cover that because it is your fault. At least that is what they will say, and they are kind of right. Something that heavy should have been in a sturdier box and at bare minimum a lot more tape on the box. You should learn how to resize boxes for something like that. It's not that hard, I would have made a triangle box to ship it personally. I would ALWAYS tell them to open the return and see if they do. If they do decide to, they are probably not scamming and I would decide then it is worth if to have him return it and decide to either have him ship it back, or just refund him. I would probably just refund him unless it you can still make $100+ after paying shipping both ways.

YOU SCREWED UP. If you're going to sell very heavy items, you can't just throw it in a box. I've sold several very heavy items. Several have required me making a plywood shipping crate. Sometimes you may be able to put the small heavy items in a box. Then wrap it in strapping tape. A long heavy metal wrench like item can be wrapped in heavy duty cardboard and then wrapped in strapping tape.

You’ve said before that you had a limit of 250 drafts, and people commented then that it’s simply not true. Why are you still saying that?

As a buyer... Since the shipping company resealed the items and there are missing items... I would want a full refund as you already know it was difficult to package up that item... Buyers dont want to deal with buying shipping material and package up an item at cost to return a damaged/missing items... Since you are losing more money for the return shipping cost... It would have been best to give a full refund and move on...sounds like a mess for the buyer and for you when you as the seller can not fill claims on these type of damaged repackage items with missing parts...If you get negative it is not really the buyers issue as it sounds like a waste of time for the buyer to deal with the shipping issues. Just accept the negative and move on.
