I like your style!! I guy I worked for started logging in the 80s when he was a young guy and would pull his skider with his 70s ford pick up. He told me once he was trying to get over flint creek pass in Montana and was in 4 low 1 gear and has to zig zag across the road to make it up.

Lucky there young man, you can blow head gasket that way. The extra heat results in the cylinder head and engine block expanding too much which results in a failure in the head gasket.

One thing all of us pulling heavy have to keep in mind, engine/jake braking heats up differential fluid quickly. This is because there is so much extra friction and heat buildup in the gear set, and the fact that you’re now using 10-40% less of your brakes, which gives you a false sense of how hard the ENTIRE drivetrain is working. The use of brakes also adds heat to the axle, so you have a compounding heat generation. Your gear set in the diff breaks in overtime generally towards acceleration/pulling type forces, and not descent/retarding type forces. This can also cause a slight variation of heat buildup. Usually at 250° it’s already starting the process of degrading, and by 300 it’s usually toast, and most heavy haul trucks have gauges.

Picked a load of golf carts from company over in Georgia. Dimensions were all wrong and the weight per unit was almost 450 pounds more than what they had listed and I asked Dimensions to confirm those specs before I accepted the job. So it went from 8 golf carts with a total weight of 7040 pounds to 10560 pounds. So I took my sweet time getting there. I don't work with big companies anymore and am taking a break from hotshotting

So just looking at the load, could you have reversed the skidder, putting the heaviest part directly over the axle? Did your trailer spring back? Sometimes after something like this you permanently damage the trailer losing the upward bow. A chassis cab Ram 4500 would have handled the load as well as the Ford. My next truck would be a Ram 5500.

Haha no 1500 is made to work on the tung. It’s funny how that big F-450 couldn’t accomplish what a RAM 3500 could do daily. But you never have any problems in that Ford ....do yah?

yet you mentioned there’s an issue with the fans so it might overheat. Thus you knew of an issue and still decided to take on the load before making sure the truck that pulls can handle it. I mean that’s like knowing your belts are showing on the tires, dry rotted tires and still driving down the road saying “hey well if they still hold air then it’s fine we will find out” Don’t be that dude that ruins it for the rest of us. People like you are the reasons why insurance rates continue to rise. As well as accidents on the rise due to pure negligence. If there’s an issue with the cooling system on the truck, have it addressed before even going out to the fuel station. Let alone put a load behind it. Do you live under a rock? Sheesh people are dense as a door knob!

Yep...the good ol' open the windows and turn the heat on to max trick always works. But definitely take care of that fan issue - frequent overheating will shorten the lifespan of the engine by a lot.

Do you get paid by mileage? Does the weight of the cargo you’re towing increase pay per run?
