In timed events such as track and field, swimming, speed skating or cycling time trials performance is easily objectively measured. This would also apply to high jump, long jump, shot put or weight lifting.

When I taught him it was just a number, he cleaned the matt with about all his opponents. Finished 28 & 4 his 1st yr. Was headed to finals and broke his nose. Had to forfeit. This is always recommended in my eyes. Win or lose, if you're coached right, you win even when ya don't 💪how do you beat the best if you don't wrestle the best? Sometimes the best is on your own team😁

I did lots of wrestle-offs back in the late 70's. After a while I focused on beating people up so bad that they didn't want to so it anymore. When I was in high school, I wrestled heavy weight. The wrestler that was a grade above me was a three time state champion and later a collegiate all american. I looked at my wrestleoff, not because I wanted his starting spot, but more I wanted to see how far away I am. Year 1: Pinned in the 3rd period. Year 2: Challenged Twice. PInned the first time. Major decision. Year 3: Maj Decision and Decision. My senior year I tore my hamstring. I was better than the other person in my grade, but my hamstring was a huge liability. I didn't challenge the spot due to that. I would have been the starter if healthy. I beat this guy in ever wrestle off since 7th grade.

I was an all state wrestler in HS. I only lost to 3 guys my Sr year, and one of them was a "B" team kid from Ponca City. He beat me in a close match. I felt terrible until I saw that the kid who started ahead of him was a 2 time state champion (and indeed became a 3 time state champ after that year). That "B" team kid also wrestled HWT sometimes (as a 190 pounder) and only lost to the 4A state champ 4-3. He was "B" team, but he was legitimately probably the second best guy in the state at 190 that year.

You and your teammate knowing what the other is going to do is exactly why it is so good for a warmup. You can't get away with any surprises, you can only rely on skill to get the better of them (so long as they're adjusting). And that's because you and your teammate will poke at each other's flaws until they are adjusted. I know it isn't the same as an actual match where you need to feel out your opponent, you don't know their style and strategy, but it is still great for improving.

Hey man, do you have advice for a wrestler who is dealing with chronic back pain? I havent wrestled since january because of it, it also causes minor mobility issues like tight hips.

I wrestled backin the mid 90’s we did wrestle offs before every match. Is it still like that?? For non wrestlers that is like you have tryouts for Varsity Basketball and you make the team and after the first game the have tryouts for the varsity team again and that happens before every basketball game lol.
