I HATE Professional Wrestling.

Ойын-сауық

I have been watching professional wrestling for 17 years. I've watched WWE, AEW, occasionally NJPW and TNA, but I have always had a bad taste in my mouth about the industry as a whole. Whether its how trainees are treated in wrestling schools, the scandals of Vince McMahon and other wrestlers, how womens wrestling is handled by companies, or the wrestling fanbase as a whole, there's a whole lot to not like. So why am I still watching?

Wrestling's biggest problem has always been the fans. We're toxic, misogynistic, disrespectful, close minded, enablers and the whole tribalism thing is embarrassing af. Maybe if the community got better and we were allowed to have respectful conversations, give constructive criticism and were able to call people out on their stuff without being sent death threats, maybe then it could get better, maybe then people like Vince wouldn't feel so comfortable taking advantage of people or feel so comfortable playing god. Maybe then. But overall I agree with everything you're saying dude, this was a great video👍

I remember when jade Cargill botched the springboard at clash of the castle she got tons of hate but when breakker botched a move the next week on raw everyone just said it was OK because he was learning 😭 Obviously none of these people deserve hate for botching, my point is just how womens wrestlers get viewed differently to the men.

  • @harrymaguire5740

    @harrymaguire5740

    8 күн бұрын

I am not trying to defend the Jade hate but tbf it was on a bigger stage and WWE is painting her as one of the faces of the women's division. I myself have not heard the excuse that it is ok for Bron as he is learning but rather that he never messes up and always puts on great matches, so one botch is ok. Jade has been messing up and botching quite a bit before leading into that match and that botch was just the thing that drove fans over the edge. Bron is what he is made to look like where Jade is close, but not there yet. I also want to say I think the hate for Jade is stupid and we should not hate on her at all and I wish her all the best (I am actually a big fan of hers) but I just wanted to put some things into perspective. There is a major problem with wrestling fans hating a lot more on women then men for the same things but I think this case was a bit (not fully) different although still definitely wrong.

The storyline with Liv Morgan is something we can’t criticize too heavily because we don’t know how this was set up. We don’t know if Liv came up with the idea, we don’t know how much control Liv has over this story. In a time of all of this social media, if Liv wasn’t comfortable with what she was doing then it would’ve been reported already. I do think there should have been a different route on this storyline but we don’t know all if the behind the scenes to be criticizing too much.

There's so much depth in that women's division to the point where you can have a midcard title for the NXT women and go "Yeah, that makes sense" but actually mean it, instead of it being sarcastic.

I mostly agree with this video but saying "WWE and AEW know that men only watch womens wrestling because of their looks" is such a bad take. Yes the clips that go viral are of Lola Vice and Jaida Parker being hot but it's not like people are switching the channel to see some ass. NXT has had a growth but it's been a consistent growth because of how good the product is. Eva Marie is one of the hottest women to ever step in to a ring period. Her in-ring work didn't even work in the divas era, by 2016 with Charlotte, Sasha, Naomi, Bliss she felt like a relic of the late 90s. If AEW "knew how much men loved womens wrestling" they'd probably feature them more but they don't,

I don't have a problem with the Liv Morgan/Dom thing because it's one thing. It's not like back in the 2000s when every single Women's storyline had to be a love triangle or a romance angle. You don't see Iyo Sky or Bianca Belair being injected into a romance storyline with let's just say Austin Theory for example. That's literally the type of stuff they'd do on a weekly basis in the early 2000s where it got to the point that Trish Stratus was basically with every member of the men's roster at one point in time. Having one or two storylines in like this at one time is okay but I don't think we should revert back to where Lita was with Edge, Torrie Wilson with Tajiri, Stacy Keibler with Randy Orton and Trish Stratus with Christian like it literally was every single week during the ruthless aggression era.

If I had to play the drinking game anytime I saw a female wrestler with tight shorts and a belt placed under their cheeks I'd have liver failure. I still remember Mandy Rose ushering in that look. And there was an interview where Athena AKA Ember Moon said she left the company because the producers told her to "dress sexy like Mandy Rose." Now damn near every women's wrestler is sporting the belts under the buttcheeks.

I think one of the things that help me in my fandom of anything really, is kind of keeping myself at a little bit of a distance. I love pro wrestling, and I have for my entire life….but I don’t watch weekly wrestling. I like watching matches and watching matches with others, but I don’t watch the weekly shows. I think one of the issues in terms of fandom, is people who kind of base their whole identities around a promotion and feel that anything else is inferior and an insult to them. There are pockets of good stuff and good conversations out there, but that’s with so many fandoms in general. I’m also a massive comic book fan, and there’s a lot of shit in that industry and especially that fan base. Just gotta figure out where the boundaries are.

I say this knowing that your literal job is to be plugged into what's going on with the business, and so this may not be fully realistic... I think that occasionally unplugging and staying off social media/out of the wrestling fandom is extremely important. A lot of my frustrations with the business are at their worst when I'm constantly having wrestling discourse thrown in my face. I love wrestling so much more when I just watch the TV shows as a fan, and don't pay attention to the discussion surrounding them. Even a week away can do wonders. Also, as someone who works in my local indies as a camera guy, your assessment of the industry is accurate. I have zero interest in being an actual performer in the business at this point because it's just politics and weird backstage dynamics and breaking your body for not much in return... which sucks. I'm good behind the camera. Keep doing what you do, my man.

I fully agree what you had to say. I think toxicity of the industry has definitely increased with social media especially as some fans get carried away whether it’s their obsession over a specific wrestler(there’s a difference between looking up to someone and being so obsessed over someone that they and their family members/friends don’t feel safe leaving their home) or overthinking of wrestling. I do get that we’re all passionate about wrestling and we all have an opinion but you cross the line if you’re attacking wrestlers online, sending them creepy dms, stalking them at airports, spreading false info about them or trying to get them to lose their job. As some wrestlers have often said that these horrible things said to them online they would never hear in person or at meet and greets. The people say these things to them are basically protected by their computer, and phone but fail to realize that the wrestlers receiving the comments are people too just like the rest of us. They’re living their dream just like everyone else in the world is trying to do. The same goes for wrestling content creator they’re people too and don’t send them creepy dms. I used to never post on social media about wrestling because I didn’t want people to know that I was a wrestling fan because of all the negativity I would see online. Over my years being a fan I’ve slowly started posting on social media my enjoyment of wrestling and have gotten to a point where I don’t take wrestling seriously I’m just here for the ride and hope everyone is successful and treated correctly. Also it shouldn’t matter which company you’re a fan of. It’s all under the same category which is wrestling. Just have fun,be positive, have a great day!

Something that kind of pisses me off is that when a beloved wrestler dies, almost the ENTIRE IWC are on the same page for atleast a DAY and a half, saying how that wrestler impacted their lives before going back to comparing AEW and WWE's ratings. Like, genuinely WHY can't it be like that all the time. Just talking about positive things about our common interest instead of arguing about whether MJF is a bigger main event draw than Cody Rhodes or some dumb shit like that. And yeah, the fact that most of the IWC will either hype up a talent until said talent gets pushed or wait until people they don't like botch something so they can say how they're the worst wrestler ever is such dogshit. There were literally people calling Sami Zayn "Super Zayn" after winning against Bron and its only been 3 MONTHS since he won the title.

I'm a woman, and womans wrestling got me into the whole sport. The a women i first saw was Gigi in the indie scene, then Paige and Alexa Bliss in WWE in 2019. I grew to love the whole sport men and women. I'm glad the women got a chance to perform without the sex object storyline. I too would live to give it a try. Onecthing about wrestling rhat bothers me is that certain women are way too over sexualized and shamed for mistakes compared to the men. And how fickle the fans are with long term story telling. I can see it slowly changing for the better in HHH era but yeah. Unfortunately, a lot of fans are perverts. Ring The Belle is a great channel talking about women's wrestling only and the matches, stories and interviews. Really made me appreciate it more. Sorry for the long text hope it made sense.

I'm actually getting ready to publish a book about my time in the industry and in one chapter I pretty much cover all the things this guy has as issues I've seen with professional wrestling. I worked for Atomic Championship Wrestling in Stevens, PA and as a Christian Straight Male I was in trouble for something most times that I posted on MY SOCIAL MEDIA page and forced to apologize. I was told on multiple occasions my ideas were stupid. This man hasn't told one lie in this entire video.

The people at the topped complained because the women (Michelle and Victoria) was stiffing punches that looked strong like the men. At that Time. So they was asked to toned it down. Here's the point a lot of people don't understand about this. There's a lot of spot's and maneuvers that are specially reserved for the top card. A lot of mid card wrestler's aren't allowed to use certain moves or even punch a certain way because it devalues the top card talent. Women at that time was the under card so they had a lot of restrictions of what they could do in the ring. Plus I don't think saying the men need to step up is good either. Because it's not about that. I also don't want to pressure women to over do it. They want to wrestle like the guy's but there's also drawbacks to that. Like more injuries and shorter career's due to injuries.

Very happy to see a guy with a very big audience be this vulnerable with how the toxicity of wrestling, wether it’s the industry or it’s fans, absolutely can harm the enjoyment of the product. It’s honestly why I refuse to watch weekly anymore because I’d much rather just enjoy it sparsely and not on a weekly.

I say this as someone who has been interested in all kinds of entertainment for practically my whole life, but with social media within the last year, pro wrestling has become a lot more similar to nerd culture than it has ever been before, and I think that's why the fanbase has started to become the way it is. I've been a fan of other franchises like Marvel and Star Wars before I even got into wrestling, and as far as I could remember, all I wanted to do sometimes was to speculate on on how stories are going to end and other easter eggs that might be thrown into storylines. And this same community also becomes irrationally angry when these stories don't go the way they think they should and go about sharing their opinions the complete wrong way and start attacking people. Now that social media reveals more and more secrets about pro wrestling every day, it has become almost completely entertainment focused and the IWC continues to become more toxic and negative just like other franchises like Marvel and Star Wars do (To be fair, those franchises are facing other issues that wrestling is not, but you get the point). I think the best fix the fanbase would be to find other ways to enjoy things and be happy. I have been able to do that by finding other hobbies like drumming and hanging out with other friends, and I think you have been able to do that through this KZread channel. I think that is the best way to fix all of these fanbases, and I think people don't realize how similar they actually are. Once people begin to see that, then I think the fanbase will become better.

I have been a fan of Pro Wrestling for over 40 years now. I have been around since the days of "Rock N' Wrestling", the last decade of "The Territories", and the first live event that I ever went to was a card that was for the AWA. I agree with your points about the current state of Women's Wrestling. Women's Wrestling has never been the draw that people think that it recently has been. It was always a special attraction/novelty portion of the show. In my honest opinion, if this is to ever really change, then the Women need to be portrayed in a similar presentation as the Men. Rhea Ripley is as great as she is, because she can work in the same style as a Man. She can blend in with anyone on the roster regardless of gender. It shows Her level of skill and dedication to the art. Many of the Women can perform on that level, but are not given the time to really showcase it. Lyra Valkiria, Julia Hart, Natalya, Iyo Sky, Asuka, Kairi Sane, Kris Statlander, Willow Nightengale, Bayley, etc. Could all fit that same compliment if they were allowed to have the breathing room i nthe ring that the Men are given... but they aren't and that is a pity. As far as the issues with the Fan's go... I honestly believe it is because Kayfabe is not a thing, and hasn't been for decades. I remember when "Dr. D" David Shultz slapped the taste out of John Stossel's mouth for calling the business fake. I remember a time where there were only a few "Smart Fans" and the general audiance could have that little bit of belief that what they were watching was an actual personal issue playing out in front of the camerea, and we get to see the fight that goes along with it. Ultimately, the business is over exposed, and the fans have been the main driver behind that happening. The primary audiance for Pro Wrestling now a days are too plugged in, and spends too much time on the "inside". And that has hurt the business. Remember, the biggest TV audience for Pro Wrestling was for "The Main Event" leading to Wrestlemania 4, when 33,000,000 watched on NBC for the rematch between Hogan and Andre (this was the evil twin ref angle) ... when we were less plugged in, and could just watch and enjoy the show for the show itself.

When it comes to how wrestlers behave in the industry, I find it to be a very complicated situation. To be clear, I am not referring to any illegal activities, abuse etc. Those are clear cut evil. I don't have experience in the wrestling industry, but I do in the music industry. They share a lot criticisms. When it comes to preformers being selfish, it shouldn't have to be the case, but the nature of those businesses often encourages it. Where it gets complicated, is I have seen talent spend years sacrificing everything (friendships, relationships, potentially having kids and a spouse etc) to create a scene where revenue is generated in what was considered to be a dead town, county or genre. They'll miss birthdays, weddings and funerals, all to create a scene where people can learn their craft and get paid to do so. This often sees the person who created the scene, being on top. Most can agree, they've earned it. However, you have to work towards the future and that involves the next generation of talent coming in behind you. This is where things get tricky. I've seen dead towns be braught to life over the course of 5 years, only for the interest to dry up in under a year and a half. This is often due to the same top talent hogging the spotlight. So then they should just step aside when the time is right? But who is the right person/group to step aside for? Some peoples egos won't allow it. Some can argue (rightfully so) that there wouldn't even be a scene without them and they should always have at least a prominent place in it(not neccessarily at the very top). I could probably go on for another dozen or so paragraghs but I'll stop there. I understand the example I gave doesn't reflect on the WWE as much as they are the biggest company in the world, but I can imagine things get even more complicated the further up the ladder you go.
