Is it even possible?

My son and I put the engine in my GPW a couple of days ago. No hoist, just pure muscle power. The tub is still off otherwise it wasn't happening. The trick is to put into the block the bare minimum of parts. If it can be fitted when the block's on the chassis, it stayed off. It was tested on an axle stand with a plank of wood as a weight spreader and the front mounts. The flywheel, clutch etc went on and then with a jack the gearbox, t box and X member were lifted in and bolted up. We both managed to keep all of our fingers!

Good video. I enjoyed it. I've never had anyone helping me put in the engine or transmission/transfer case. I've always used the crane and or/floor jack with blocks of wood. The only time I had help was putting the body back on because I didn't want to scratch it up. Took it off using 2x4 boards as levers, etc.

I think the tiles on the ground made the job a lot harder than it should be, I made up a large tripod, lifted the engine with a chainblock, and wheeled the Jeep towards the engine, I found I had much more control over the engine height by using a chainblock, the hydraulics tend to be very jumpy to gauge, but it is in now! Well done. The only bad thing was the awful music! Stay safe! Chris B.

the throttle arm will naturally fall into the upside down position position so it should be tied up. it's a bit late with this hint but if you put a jack under the front of the engine , remove the engine mounts and lower the engine on to the frame. this should provide more space at the rear of the engine....that was me more than once and i hope it helps someone. working on a jeep is always a learning experience

It is possible, certain amount of luck involved but making sure the engine is really aligned as much as possible and levelled to the transmission is very important. Good point about bringing the jeep to the engine! Didn't think of that!

You got it done now---but if you ever need to do some work on the rear of the engine again---just take the front motor mounts out, drop the engine down on the frame and it will give you considerable more room to work.
