Hornby intended to release it in black, but many IOW modellers informed them that Crimson was correct for that style of signwriting; "IWC" black was introduced around 1912 following a change of management.

Having been born and brought up in the Isle of Wight and used the steam trains regularly anything IoW pre 1966 is on .y shopping list. Sadly the terriers went when I was too young to know but enjoyed dad's memories of them. Couldn't resist. buying this one nd so pleased with it. Although a fixed price I didnt pay full wack. How? There was a 5% discount for English Heritage members (but it didnt ask for membership No.) Next I had quite a few points from previous purchases from Hornby.Worth joining their club. I paid just about £124.

I can understand why you went for this, gorgeous livery. Terriers are my favourite British steam engine (Gronks being my favourite diesel) and considering only 50 were built it's amazing how many liveries they carried in their lifetimes due to how many owners they had! For anyone who is a Terrier fan I recommend the book Stroudly and his Terriers by Tom Middlemass. It covers each locos history in depth and is well worth getting.

Great looking loco, expertly reviewed. It's at a price where it would be of interest to Terrier collectors/fans/IoW modellers, but less so to others, I suspect. Having said that, I'm all for Rule 1!

I agree regarding not buying web exclusives; I wasn't going to buy one, I made sister loco No 9' by repainting Hornbys' Brighton in Midland Railway Red, then adding "IWCR" using Fox Transfers and lining (which 9 had while 10 had the full lettering). I bought No 10 and now have those two and the IWCR black terrier, plus a converted Adams Radial that is now IWCR 4-4-0 No 6.

Mine’s a green one in use on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The first model of the Terrier tank locomotive was made by Tri-Ang in 1959, and was a model of Brighton Works.

Good video Jenny, this looks like a great loco. Fitted a decoder is difficult, but I’ve found if you go for an imperium 5 Micro or a one of the new Connect from Rails, you don’t have to cut the clip, even though you can not use it, and fit these to the loco without any problems. I’ve fitted sound decoders on a couple of my IOW Terriers, from Youchoos. They have a good detailed guide to fit them, but only by cutting bits out. Great little model!😊

Gorgeous little Terrier!! I love the livery on it!! But it might not work for my layout as it’s originally designed as a “Dad’s Army“ layout but has become a heritage layout because I bought a Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

It's good of Hornby to tell us that the Terrier is DCC ready, but why don't they tell you the pin configuration on the box. Are you expected to dismantle the model in the shop in order to find out which chip to buy when you buy the model itself.

I agree the DCC fitting is a right pain. First attempt on the green SR one was a nightmare. With this one I bought a 6 pin adaptor on e Bay. It has 3 soldering pads each side making soldering easier. I used a small decoder with trailing leads. I shortened these and soldered 6 wires on and cut the stay alive ones right down. It fits snugly in. Another way I am experimenting with. The Zimo 6 pin one seems to have longer pins than normal and by very careful bending it can bend backwards and sit on top of where it plugs into. It does have to be bent exactly to enable it to bend over and plug in enough.

Disappointing video!! Here's me hoping this would sell poorly and end up being reduced, then you go and give it the kind of showcase that quite frankly Hornby should be paying you for! Now im going to have to pay full whack... Joking aside, excellent review! I already have the IWCR train pack with no. 11 so this new one is a must have. Another potential livery would be Freshwater Yarmouth Newport no. 2 in green. And finally, surely no-one can be comfortable having 13 of anything - you need to buy at least one more...
