I Had HIV for 19 Years and Didn't Know

“Most people think its a miracle, and to a certain extent, it is."
Janet Arinaitwe was born with HIV but didn’t find out until she was 19 years old. She recently became the first HIV-positive person in the UK to give birth to three consecutive HIV-negative children. There is still a huge amount of ignorance surrounding HIV and AIDS. Here Janet answers some of the key questions. www.bodyandsoulcharity.org/

That’s so irresponsible to know that your grandchild had hiv and you didn’t say not one word, she could’ve died

As long as a pregnant woman is tested before birth and given antiretroviral meds, the chances of giving it to the child are greatly reduced. That is why it is important to know your status.

I decided very shortly after being diagnosed with HIV that I would not allow anyone to shame or belittle me because of my status. Growing up gay in rural Montana, I was riddled with shame and self-hatred, and I knew that I couldn't go back to living that way.

It's crazy how some people are STILL misinformed and quick to judgement. I don't have HIV and even I'm aware of the recent medical advances. She's a smart mom, deserving of children & love. I wish her all the best and may she have a good pregnancy. ❤️

When I was younger and they taught us about HIV/AIDS in school, it was essentially a death sentence. It’s amazing how far science and medicine has progressed to the point where it could be undetectable in some patients and they can give birth without passing it on to children. Wishing Janet and her family all the best!

I've been HIV positive since 2016 and undetectable since 2017. I've honestly never been healthier. I eat healthy and limited alot of sugar due to hiv. I discovered nutrition that I've never known before due to research right away. I never get sick but I used to get sick alot as a child when I didn't have this.

When I was in high school, our health teacher had an old student come in to talk to the class. She had tested positive in college and talked about her experience. She brought her entire family, husband and 3 kids. No one else had it except for her oldest daughter, who was like 10. It was an amazing experience and very brave of her and her family.

What an amazing, strong woman, and mother. HIV is still incredibly stigmatised, raising awareness and empathy around people with HIV/AIDS is such an important thing to do

Such a Beautiful glowing woman, living with & adapted to her condition. I know lots of people at home in Ireland who have been living for 30+ years now with both HIV & AIDs due to the Heroin epidemic of the late 70s , the 80 & 90s , people reacting ignorantly & treating them differently can make a persons life unbearable.

This woman is amazing and I’m so thankful she shared her story. For those of you not in the know, remember there are pills you can take following an HIV exposure that almost completely reduce risk of transmission. Be safe, be honest, and be open with your partners.
