In this video, NetworkChuck will teach you how to hide secret messages and files inside photos.
Steganography, a technique that is centuries old and is now adopted to new technologies and especially HACKERS!! Hackers have been known to hide malicious files inside files like photos or audio files and later extract these files on a victim’s computer to wreak havoc. But, steganography is also used for good! People will often use steganography to hide secret messages safely without detection by authorities. In this video, NetworkChuck will show you how to use Steghide, a very popular steganography tool available on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Your involvement with your kids is simply brilliant. :) I almost fell out of my chair laughing when you daughter started crying "not again". I envisioned my kids doing the same. Loved how their excitement grew towards the end.
I personally use steganography to add a hidden watermark image to some of my art and photography That way, if you tweak the brightness and color, it reveals that it belongs to me :) That last part with your daughters was absolutely adorable!-

The girls in this video are a mood. I have boys, but when I do similar things (of course about cybersecurity!) they react the same way. Both the chuckettes and my boys will appreciate it when they're grown, though. I sure appreciate all the things my parents did like this with me.

The whole challenge with the kids was adorable and awesome. One hated it, initially, lol, but you're teaching important stuff, and finding a way to utilize stuff you know, which helps it stick in. Wins all around 👍
For my college computer security class, I wrote my own stenography tool for the final project. It used the same LSB embed method with arbitrary start byte based on a hash of the file name and an optional key phrase. Passed that final! Thanks for the flash back!
“I’m not doing this! It’s boring and it’s weird.”🤣
Thanks for all your information chuck! You have inspired me to learn more and more about the inner workings of a network. Can't believe your at over 2.5 million subs... for a tech tutorial channel that's impressive.

Chuck, this is by far one of my favorites. Your daughters are adorable and hilarious. I must have replayed 20 times during the wailing and question marks, haha. Exceptional video!
Really wholesome mate. My daughter is three and i can't wait to send her on little learning adventures like this. These are the feel good moments of being a dad and wouldn't trade it for the world. Great stuff
What I did enjoy is you teaching your kids the beauty of computers ! I actually wanted to do that with my nephew but I’m not a tech savvy just yet !
Woah, that is so scary cool! Thanks for making this, Chuck!!
"You do not need steghide or any program or tool," for that matter, only the command prompt in windows to hide a message inside an image file. Chuck, I absolutely love your channel and content, bro! Big fan! Keep up the good work! I learn a lot from this guy everyone, and moreso learn different ways of doing things, and lots of cool refreshers, I'm a gen x guy at 50, and I have been working with computers and tech and coding, since I was a wee boy, like basic, with my tiny Timex Sinclair, many moons ago. My cassette tape I used as my harddrive...;) love it. peace chuck, later all.

Ughh Chuck you drive me crazy with these insane interesting things 😁😍🤩 Im studying CCNP and want to continue in networking but you keep pushing me to study cyber security 😄
From a forensics pov, its pretty easy to figure out if a picture or anything for that matter has been used for stegano. Mostly in the header of the file
I really like your way you present all these knowledge. Btw. I see more and more steghide writing across the net, it is represented as a new thing but it is a very old technique, but it is reborn today ...
Oh man, I love this idea, I learn a lot of things from your videos. I appreciate it. Thanks so much, keep it upp
Awesome Vid Thanks for keep Us up to date with Cybersecurity
One of my students introduced me to steghide. Good video, but you need steghide to both embed and extract. Blackhats will use binders to embed malware and crypters to avoid detection. But that would probably be too dangerous to demo. I mention that for awareness only.
i love that youre teaching your kids this. that made me so happy

On Windows, you can do something similar by typing something like "copy /b file1.png+file2.txt file3.png" in the terminal on the correct folder. For revealing the message, just open the final file with Notepad and go to the last line. (It will not encrypt or compress your message, it will just store it)
Always love your content, You're best teacher

Ooo new studio - we need a tour!
Steghide is a great tool, super easy to use and doesn't appear to be detectable by StegDetect (at this moment). I've been writing an encrypted LSB tool in python and it's fun to play with and find new features to add. Next up, I'll look into graph theory because it's super interesting. Great video and I'm glad to see someone covering Steganography, because it's awesome.
Now that's the kind of advertisement we need to see more in this world ^^. Nice video!
Your new studio is awesome 😃😃😃.
Thanks! I've been searching how to get it and this is brilliant :D
This is awesome! And it's cool that your girls did follow (after some resistance 😂😂). I did try that when mine was younger but it was hard as English isn't our first language. Great video... as always! AND good job girls! ⭐⭐
Steghide still uses this old-style UI? That's beautiful, I ve used in 2015 for my thesis :d
Hi Chuck? Mind doing a home lab tour? Server rack, NAS system, Routers and Switches you use.... The whole thing.
Amazing setup !!
Awesome. When I saw the thumbnail for this video, I thought, 'awesome! I'll bet this is about steganography!', and it is. In my cybersecurity fundamentals class at uni, we touched on it briefly and it seemed fascinating.
Hey man! Awesome channel, I was wondering if you could share what app you use to stream on. much appericated
So but is the malware able to run from the picture? or is this just a means to encapsule and transport it?
@jaaguar13
3 ай бұрын
Depends on the malware and on the hiding method. In his case he was only encapsulating it to transport the malware. But it is possible to add also a malware that gets executed when you click on the image or when a system/application tries to process it.
Great segueway to the ad. Way to go!

So, steganography is simply a way of covertly 'distributing' the 'code' for whatever program you want, but the program is not executable until extracted by the steg. software and then run. So, if you download an image (or any other file) that has embedded malware (or any other program) you will NOT infect your computer simply by viewing it in a graphics program. Is that correct?
@Darkk6969
Жыл бұрын
That would be correct. It's like downloading a zipped file. Nothing happens until you extract the files.
@ambientsounds3705
Жыл бұрын
So the bit about Bitdefender was a moot point. For Bitdefender to protect you, you would have to know there is malware in a file then extract it. The image got past Bitdefender.
