Has a foreigner spoken a different language to you while within your native country?

American tourists do that on a regular. Certain Germans love to interact with them just to hear "your English is pretty good" but not knowing Americans also love to give people compliments even when it's not true. I was an exchange student in the US and when I was with my fellow German students, the American students told is it is rude to speak in German while they were in our presence. At 1st I thought they were tripping but we continued future conversations in English so that everyone could feel comfy. As a tourist you are not forced to speak the language of the country you visit but at least learn some phrases. The people will welcome it, at least you are trying...

@@rikkidgermano9640 Interesting perspective. The advice I like to give is the lowest barrier to entry: learn phrases if you like, but at the very least become an expert at the translator app. That's super easy to do, the locals will respect it, and you'll actually be more capable and have a better experience. They even have conversation modes that speak the translatation for you. If you're good at it, you can actually have a complex conversation. I used to do that with taxi drivers in the beginning.

The title is deceiving. The lady asked if you spoke Spanish "Espanol, hablas Espanol? "Spanish, do you speak Spanish?" she never scolded you. She even said you spoke Spanish well.

I appreciate your perspective! My interpretation in that moment was that for a stranger to shout from their rooftop to another stranger on the street to interrupt their conversation with that question felt like a critique of the language I was using. It’s true she did say I speak Spanish after we had been talking in Spanish already.

@@Ryan-Riegner As MX AMs born and living in the US we have been literally told to "learn to speak English if you to live in the US", "Why don't you go back to MX if you want to speak Spanish in our country" etc, etc etc. I won't even go into more vulgar words used. So, our "interpretation" of scolding is vastly different.

It's called assimiliation and courtesy. Fully, if you're in a foreign country just visiting for a week or so then learn a little I guess. But if you're living there, learn the language if the local language is not English. You moved, you're the one who has to adapt. Too bad we can't do that here without being called racist by some woke wacko.

Agreed that it's best to at least try, even with a translator app. It shows courtesy even if it doesn't work and they need to switch to English if they speak it, or to just use the translator app with you.

Ryancito, that lady started a conversation with you apparently out of boredom and curiosity period, (ya no le busquen tres pies al gato). I know, fortunately I've been to Lima 4 times now, and I'll go back again in a couple months. This just happened to be a one day layover, which I don't recommend!

if for some how you have to leave the usa for any reason and you decide to come to Mx take your mind chip out reset it and include learning spanish in your Journey over here, not all mexicans are willing to deal with outsiders

I know via a man from the US. who learned Spanish fully and lives in one of the Hill towns like San Miguel part of the year that many of the Americans cluster up in towns like San Miguel and never learn any Spanish past a few basic words such as Spanish for beer, etc., so I can understand if some of the people the locals get annoyed at them I think they would be fine if there was a few visiting for a short time but when there’s many retirees staying there for a long time and never bothered to learn the language. Someone can’t always learn the language fully at age 60 or more maybe but they can at least try to more learn more than a few words. I was able to learn German when I was over 50 years old and passed my intermediate test.

My experience: I was suprised at how accomodating the locals in San Miguel are with the foreigners. The local population was always incredibly nice to me. I can't speak for other small towns in Mexico however. I understand not wanting to learn a language as well as a foreigner. Just to get to my current level of low-intermediate I've had to put in tons of hours, and not many people want to start over in such a fundamental way from scratch. It's easier to just learn a few words and stick to people in your language if they're in great enough numbers. Honestly that's what I did for the first 3 years of travel, and only in year 4 did I bite the bullet to learn. Congrats on learning German! That's quite an achievement.

Fair point, but certainly, having traveled around Latin America for 4 years, there are points when you overhear a group of Americans talking, in a cafe for example and I feel like I've teleported to somewhere in the US. I had similar experiences in Cusco, Condesa in CDMX and of course Cancun.
