I’m a korean who lives in Vietnam with an American spouse. And yes he did get scammed. With US passport, you don’t need any visa to visit Korea up to 90 days, and most of VN int,l airports know that. Also even if you do, K-ETA cost shouldn’t be more than 10,000won($7.50). The VN international airports are known for corruption and bribe. One time, they tried to get me saying that my resident card isn’t valid, and took all my belongings including passport and the phone and held me in their security check room for an hour without telling me anything. I had to beg them to let me use my phone so I can reach out my husband’s company’s HR. Basically what I heard from the HR is that they wanted to get paid off.

I guess, he was told to do it because Vietnam isn't on the list and the staff might've thought it was necessary since he was in Vietnam and traveling to Korea from there. Makes no sense to get it since as a US citizen, he's already entitled to a visa-free up to 90 days in Korea. As for the $100...something fishy indeed went on. As far as I know, K-ETA should convert to roughly $9 USD

Did you have just a tourist visa for Thailand? I often fly between Korea and Japan. Even though I get an automatic 90-day tourist visa as a US passport holder, I *always* need to provide proof of "onward travel" (return ticket or ticket to another country) when checking in. I heard it's because immigration needs proof you already have a ticket out of the country and are not going to stay there indefinitely if you run out of money. Not saying I agree with that policy but that's just what I heard. Since I want to be flexible with my travel stays, I always buy a cheap temporary onward ticket online and it always works. You can Google it online. It's basically like you're "renting" a real flight ticket reserved in your name for 48 hours. The alternative is just to buy any ticket from an airlines that has a free cancellation and then cancel it as soon as you arrive at your destination.

Sure, when you arrive at the airport there will be ‘touts” offering you services and such. Ignore them. Change your money before you depart. The family we stayed with (Airbnb: Lilly Homestay) arranged for our pickup from the airport to their place (about an hour ride ), cooked 2 meals a day for us, loaned us their scooter for getting around… I can’t speak for ALL of Vietnam, but the area is clean, safe and stunningly beautiful. Travel savvy, do your research and you’ll have a great time! Do beware that ATMs may not work with your card. Change money before you leave or do it at a Viet bank. Enjoy.

The airport staff DID NOT scammed him. When you need an ETA (electronic travel authorization) to enter a country, they will ask for it before allowing you to board the plane. The staff was just informing him of that. That scam is very common when you try to apply for an ETA. You might find a webpage that looks A LOT like the official page to apply for the ETA. You answer all the questions and at the end it shows you that outrageous price. What actually happens is that you’re paying a third party to submit your application for you (even though you already did all the work). It’s very sneaky. ETA’s are usually very cheap.

I suspect the girl just saw the banner headline, not the URL and was trying to be helpful. These so called visa assist websites get away with it because they are not technically scams. They claim to make the process easier for a fee. Sometimes (as in the case with the Vietnamese visa) they CAN speed up the process because they have corrupt links to officials. In other cases their fee is for simplifying the official form which they then submit on your behalf. This may slow the process if the real server thinks it is receiving spam from them. So, you need to be careful.

Always make sure the website you're accessing is not "sponsored" by another company. Always go to the real sites. You can see if the site is sponsored or not when you do your Google searches. This exact thing almost happened to me, except I knew the price of the visa so when it said I had to pay $100 I took another look and it was the "sponsored" site. And note: this is not the airlines or airports problem. It's an individual error he made in accessing the wrong website.

It's your responsibility to make sure you have the proper documents to enter a country. The way you can do this is by planning your journey and research whether you need a visa or other form of authorization before departing for the country. Just because you have a powerful passport, doesn't mean you can just walk into any country. And check with your airline whether your layover will require you to move between airport or using a different terminal which might require a pass through the immigration check at which point, you do need to check what you need to do before your journey. This is days before the journey, not when you are about to check into your flight.

The people at the airport told him to pay $1000 cash for tax purposes then the reason was changed to “coffee tips” without any paper work then if he didn’t pay he will be forced to go back to the US and fined $1000. Then they made him sign a bogus paper stating that he “no longer wants the box”. So they pretty much stole my box.
