I Got Scammed Buying A Van… VANLIFE NIGHTMARE??

Not a great start to van build 2.0... but I want to be honest & open about my mistakes because I am only human & I am not the first person to be scammed by a car dealership.... & unfortunately I won't be the last.

I’d report them to the State Attorney Generals office. A dealership was doing something similar in my state. Not all car sales people are the scum of the Earth. My father sold cars for 40 + years! I sold them for about six years after divorcing my husband, and knowing I could never work in a restaurant where people were drinking alcohol again! I worked with 10 men and nine of them weren’t that great some of them I would not associate with at all. The dealership kept threatening to fire me because I was educating my customers, and it slipped out in finance one day. I didn’t care because there was another dealership that had a seat waiting for me because they hurt that I was honest, took care of my customers from the time they walked in the door and forever! So don’t judge every book by the cover those cute guys that are smiling at you girls across the table watch everyone of them if you wanna buy a vehicle and you’re a woman the best thing you can do is educate yourself first before you buy! That is actually with everything that we do in life. If we don’t educate her selves first we are Ignorant to truths.

@@just_jake6050You’re correct, poor choice of words on my part. Not all car salespeople are the same, but, in my experiences of buying vehicles, and also assisting in the process, I have probably met just a single car salesperson that wasn’t completely out for blood, and that person still tried to sell my friend a completely unnecessary extended warranty. I get it, people gotta make a living, and commission is how that’s done, but there does tend to be a large disparity between the price you see online/various other methods, and what it actually is whenever you get to the dealership, that’s 110% true. It’s all about getting you in the door. In the early 00s, my dad saw an ad in the paper for a truck, and thought it was a great price, and went to the dealer to buy it, only to discover it was marked up $2k more. His response? The next day he came back with the physical newspaper ad. They sold him the truck at that price. Sorry, but you can’t tell me that the markups aren’t nonsense. I do appreciate you sharing your opposing opinion, though.

Here's an option you might not like it how about downsizing your van for a cheaper one that fits all the requirements and trading your van in for a profit and paying a large percentage of the extra onto the loan to get down your payments ? Failing that the same principle but piling all the extra money into your van build ? I'm currently on loan number two and I'm balancing between saving doing what I want to do and bringing the loan down much much faster to cut out a lot of interest over 5 years so subsequently if you pay off the loan in 2 and 1/2 years you will save an absolute crap load of interest. The interest is a killer but if you are dedicated and religious with payments you may be able to work out paying just that little bit extra on your loan and paying it off early. I was in the used car motor trade in the UK for 13 years in the 80s and 90s and you really really have to watch your back with some of those people. Some of them would rip off their own grandmum. Hope things are improving

Good job on waiting on the next year to buy your warranty. I never buy extended warranties until close to the end of the manufacturer warranty. Also, remember you can buy a manufacturer's warranty by ANY dealership. What I always do is search on the forums of other owners who drive the same make/model and you can find posts of people talking about where they got their best deal. There are some dealerships that offer great deals on warranties and prefer to sell in volume rather than make a killing on each warranty. Also remember to be sure you are buying the EXACT warranty covered by Dodge or whomever is the manufacturer. You don't ever have to buy an extended warranty from the dealership you purchased your vehicle. Most of them charge a ridiculous amount. I have purchased extended warranties several times now and each dealership was in another state. It's a very easy process. At this point, what's done is done regarding your deal, so just enjoy your new van and I wish you many safe and happy miles.

Wow, what a terrible thing to happen to such a nice person. We were sorry to hear this, Tory. Don't beat yourself up. Something similar happened to us. I don't think we are dumb and neither are you. These kind of people are slick and well trained in how to scam people. Some people wouldn't admit it publicly and you have because you want to warn and help others. And you are moving forward and won't let this ruin your purchase of the van. We always admire how you can shake it off (we so want you to be able to see Taylor Swift) and move forward in a positive direction.

$2000 to see Taylor Swift? Lol, I paid $2 (yes $2) to see Eric Clapton in the early 70s. I guess prices have increased, just a little.

There should be one type of sales contract with very clear information listed! Also there should be 5 business day return no questions asked, under 100 miles of driving. We can not rely on dealers “integrity”…

Way too many dealerships pull all sorts of scams. You have to break out a calculator and look at every line item on the contract! I have a friend that financed a Kia Sorento for $42,000 when it was listed for $29,000. They added $13,000 to the purchase price with a bunch of BS fees, warranties, paint protection, etc.

Don't feel too bad. You took a chance. Most people live in fear of what might happen and never take that chance. In this case, it was a negative experience, but it's not the worst. You are out some money but you mitigated the worst of it. You learned an extremely valuable life lesson, and won't make that same mistake again.

My friend ran his business for forty years. He thought he had everything nailed down when he hired an accountant to help him sell his life’s work. He laid out what he wanted to do and the accountant set up everything. After it was a done deal he told the accountant ok now what about paying taxes and the accountant actually said to him, “ you’re screwed.” It took him several years and a change in the federal tax code to get out of the mess he was in. Then he had to pay interest on the late payment of the taxes he had withheld while he got it fixed. Always get another person to look over your shoulder and make sure you don’t miss something. We all want to be adults and independent but everyone misses something sometimes. I’m 76 and my wife and daughter have saved my ass muchas veces. Good luck with your buildout.

What they did was they took your excitement about getting a new vehicle and sliding a fast one on you thinking that you'll just sign really quick and go with the deal to get that van. I'm dealing with a similar issue where I had a visit about 10 dealerships across five different states to find my cargo van and I had a whole bunch of IOUs and writing to be done and I'm still having an issue that they do not fix that I spent 5 hours waiting in the dealership for with a door sensor. They try to band-aid it with gell instead of actually fixing or replacing it

The point about which state to buy in (re: cooling-off period) is helpful. I prefer to keep financing separate from the purchase. Also, it's helpful to pay a mechanic to inspect any used vehicle BEFORE the purchase.

Hi Tory! Sorry to hear of your disaster with the dealership. I wish I eas with you during that time so that you would not have become his next victim. LOOK HERE: watching another YT'er van rebuild. They had to rebuild, due to their van flooring and cabinets being destroyed, by water leaking from their water tanks. IF you should put tanks in the cabinets, make sure that they are insulated to not allow the water at anytime if ever leaking in hoses and tanks to leak and destroy your wood and cabinets. God Bless You Gorgeous Girl! Have a Beautiful, Blessed Week!

I paid $36,000 for 2012 f150, everytime i take my vehicle in for oil change & drive it out of their lot something else goes wrong. Whenever you bring your vehicle in take pictures of the body & wheels as you may have dents or scratches when you pick up your vehicle. Good luck with the build!!!

That has happened to all of us especially when we were young I don’t understand why car dealerships had to take such advantage. I remember in your last video you said that they advertised one price and then when you got there it wasn’t that price. I know it’s exciting to buy a new vehicle and it’s hard to keep a level head about it. The way I learned To get around this is to get my own financing before I go to the dealership then all I have to do is call up the bank tell them what price and that’s what I finance

It happens to everyone. Sorry it happened to you. For most people a vehicle purchase is their second most expensive purchase and as far as I know there is no oversight on car dealers. As a REALTOR, there are so many laws that govern our profession and possible repercussions holding us accountable, that in 15 years, I have not known of anyone being "ripped off" purchasing real estate. But everyone I know has a car buying horror story. Good Luck to you.
