    As a person of color, I enjoyed seeing the stylist braid and the technique with synthetic hair. I also liked seeing the screen recording of her IG page featuring varying textures. She seems very knowledgeable about the process!

    Increases housing cost and artificially inflates the local economy increases prices on pretty much everything. And the sudden increase in population puts extra strain on the working class it forces the increase of hours when the workforce has actually grown any in many cases several jobs will refuse to increase hours in just demand more labor during your hours that you are there

    Tbh, I don't think the issue is appropriation, as braids are kind of universal - they were also popular between Vikings, Medieval European, Native American, and so on, each for their own cultural reasons. But black communities have faced discrimination for doing their hair in certain braided styles and the same communities that did so are the ones using that style now, like It's only acceptable when white people wear it.

    Also the disrespect when cultural elements are used just because they are ‘fashionable’ or ‘trendy’ like Henna, bindis, etc. Without any appreciation for it. It's someone else's history, not plain festival fashion. As long as you get that, I don't have an issue.

    Isn’t it just a colourful plait? As far as I’m aware, Vikings aren’t around anymore but their descendants are and I’m not sure if they care about one braid that’s done in loads of places.

  • @dellae798

    @dellae798

    That’s where they always go wrong not acknowledging their “inspo”. Non black women getting fun festival styles (like adding colorful hair) I don’t think is appropriating. The stylist however is a diff story. I think a lot of the techniques and products used were appropriated. I don’t think she would’ve known to use them had she, or whoever taught her, not seen or been studying the techniques/products black stylists use and how they use them. A lot of women who don’t have course hair don’t need to find and create ways to keep their hair laid down and in these styles to the extent we do . I know black women aren’t the only culture to wear “braids” or wear extensions but the way we wear weave and install it is unique to our hair and is also used as a protective style not just a style for fun. So I think that’s where appropriation comments are coming from. And someone pointing that out doesn’t mean they’re “negative”. Saw someone say they’re glad this is a “positive thread” !! Which I’m guessing meant glad no one is really speaking on what you spoke on lol

  • @millah1211

    @@mandeep3.14 yes it is a colorful plait… but this one plait was inspired by several different cultures, and several different stylist. This video has been uploaded to this platform on a channel that has over 3 million subscribers and has over 20k views. this one plait sparked this conversation and will continue to do so due to the lack of acknowledgment of the inspiration and credit for which she said was important then failed elaborate on. It’s extremely upsetting to watch both the girl and stylist, act as if this style, this slicked back ponytail with laid edges and colorful braid extension just popped into their heads from thin air. So it’s not just as simple as a colorful plait. Refinery29 could have done better!!!

    That half assed “acknowledgement” of the inherent cultural appropriation that comes with “festival braids” did nothing for me. You can’t say you have to acknowledge the history of these styles without actually doing that. These styles came from BLACK women, and we wear them every day in many different colors and arrangements to protect our hair and help us feel confident. Yes- these styles are for fun, but they are also to protect our specific hair texture, and many of us have dealt with being made fun of for wearing these same styles. Personally- I don’t think these styles look flattering on those with straight hair- probably because they were never meant for them 😬 but to each their own- just be respectful 🤷🏽‍♀️

"laying her edges" was a stretch but the style is not exclusive to any culture. if you've ever been to a festival you'll know it's dusty and you often can't wash your hair there. the dust can cause tangling and matting pretty quick. nothing wrong with her protecting her hair with a simple braid
