I got kicked out of Auto Cross! Cammed Mercury Grand Marquis.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

OOPS! I got booted from the last Auto Cross of the season due to a sound violation. Looks like it'll be back to the drawing board for exhaust next season. I think true NASCAR style boom tubes may be in order, we'll see! Combined with some kind of #BlackWidowExhaust setup, maybe I can build something that sounds wicked, but keeps me within sound regulations...

This was the event that I heard/saw your Grand Marquis! I loved the sinister sound and heard you run it twice and then, no more…now I know why. The motorcycles “stunting” behind the course/track were just as loud as your awesome V8!!! They probably picked up some of their dBs as well as yours with their sound measurements. The side exhaust(s) didn’t help your case either. The first run sounds pornographic with you tickling the rev limiter! ❤ Even after the SS wool, the second run sounds great too! You’ll have to check out my noise limiting “four 9” dongles” on my C5 Z06 at the MAC events in 2024-I lowered the dB from 103 to 95, 50’ away perpendicular from the track and ~36” off the ground. I’m planning on the first practice and Novice Class, as it will be my first year of autocross-I raced two events last year. 😊

I'll be at the "knock off the rust" practice at DCTC at the end of March. That'll be the last on the current setup, after that it'll go under the knife for a 5 speed swap and new exhaust, real boom tubes this time from SpinTech. I'll try to make as many events as I can this year since I have a MAC membership now, I'll have to keep an eye on COM autoX events too.

Chris Birdsong put resonators on one of his Chargers that are loud like this one. It brought it down just a few decibels. They are high performance resonators. I'm not sure the name of them.

try electric cut outs and plumb them into some mufflers. or build an exhaust you can swap out whenever you go autocrossing with sound limits. simple

I was thinking about that, obviously space under the car is at a premium too, being how low I am. I had also considered stacking a Black Widow Widowmaker and a Neighborhater back to back. I only need to be under 95dB, which is still pretty loud honestly...

What a kick ass set up. What all have you done suspension wise? I got a 2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor, I’m just leaving it stock, I’m not gifted enough to do all sorts of stuff like this to it, and I don’t race or anything, I just put around and that’d enough fun for me lmao. I can’t believe they’d really bitch about it being slightly too loud. Wtf? You’re racing, shit should be loud. Something tells me that’s not what it was really about. They probably just hating on the 4 door sleepers. Especially with it being body on frame, or basically just a lowered 90’s era F-150 with a sedan body. Probably makes them cry at night. But if it really was just too loud for them, I’d hate to see them in Alabama. Everyone’s got a straight piped V8 something.

I honestly think my side exit setup did me in, it would have been pointed directly at the decibel reader lol. The noise limit at this particular venue has more to do with new home construction nearby, and not wanting to piss off the venue owners with complaints, so we can keep coming back, which I get. The car actually gets a lot of positive attention at events, since no one really runs them. As far as suspension, I've thrown everything available at it, QA1 front coil overs, QA1 rear adjustables, Roush rear springs, Massive Speed System trailing and watts link arms, ADTR front and rear sway bars, etc.

You should get exhaust tip extensions you can add on while at the track that direct the sound *AWAY* from the microphones on the track. They look kinda ugly and sorta look like those Japanese lowrider cars with the long exhaust buuuuut, they will help you

I went with custom grind cams from Todd Warren at Apocalypse Performance. Keep in mind, before I even considered doing cams, I had already done the supporting mods as well, 4.10 rear gears, 3600 high stall torque converter, full exhaust w/ long tube headers, intake, a tune from Marty Ochs, etc. just throwing cams at it wouldn’t have made much difference other than sound. When I did cams I did the whole top end, ie springs and valve guides to support a higher lift cam. Being that you have a 97, you have the older NPI heads, if you’re going as far as doing cams, you may consider swapping to PI heads and intake which will also give you a bump in compression to around 10.5:1. If you haven’t already, start looking at some of the supporting mods before thinking about cams, even just some bolt-ons, better rear gears, and a tune will wake these cars up! Happy hot rodding!

@@Socoolds455 thank you and I really appreciate you responding and explaining in alot of detail. I was for sure just going for the sound lol but I'm going to do some of those other mods also. Once again thank you and I might be reaching out in the near future for questions and updates.

Look up Todd Warren Cams, he can spec you something custom, or there are some off-the-shelf grids from comp cams too. Be warned though it’s an investment, I’m probably in $3500 between parts and labor.

@@neilbrown82 I am still still running those little resonators, if I dumped the exhaust I have no doubt it would pass sound, but the side exit has really grown on me.
