Really sorry for your experience. Unfortunately when insuring your car in the uk is very expensive. Your car model, Your location , your age, if you have a driveway or not and for how long you have held a UK or EU license. If you live in a city then you’ll be paying alot. I got my car a fiat 500. I pay over £1200 a year for such a small car, so I can imagine for a Mercedes. Never buy a car before insuring it first.

I don't understand why they charged you that much. On Admiral, I got the cheapest of about 1,240 for a year and am to pay 114 monthly and i am with international licence. So your story is very confusing. But am glad you returned the car. I can also point to you how you can get even cheaper cars lesser than 2,000

Insurance is dependent on your location as well. If you live in a big city like London or Birmingham, you may pay over 3K, however if you live in a small town then you won’t pay much. I live in a very small town and had to pay £1200 for insurance as first time driver. Now the type of car plays a role as well though.
