I got into MEDICAL SCHOOL after dropping out of college... twice! - Interview with Phillymed

Ойын-сауық

“Someone like me can’t get into to medical school”
In this video I interviewed Philly, who went from dropping out of college twice, to scoring in the top percentile for her medical entry exam (UCAT) and getting an offer for her dream medical school to study graduate entry medicine. Getting into medical school can be difficult, but Philly shows that with determination and hard work, anything is possible and in just a few short years she will become a DOCTOR! In this video she shares her answer to the question “how to get into medical school”.
Whether you are a medical school hopeful, a medical student, want to become a doctor one day or you are just interested in how to become a doctor as a graduate, you’re sure to find some inspiring nuggets of information in this video.
We talk about:
Perfectionism
Not getting the right grades for medical school
Dropping out of A-Levels
Applying to medicine as an older student
Determination despite setbacks
Being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult

Philly's story sounds exactly like mine but with law rather than medicine. I am 29 and starting university this year. It is so refreshing to hear that there are other people who have had very similar hurdles. Love this!

“…how important it is to be resilient and you can’t just be resilient, you have to go through these motions to build that resilience” really resonated with me. I dropped out of physiotherapy degree in second year for mental health reasons and lack of enjoyment. I randomly decided to do a level 3 first aid course and was introduced to emergency care. Absolutely fell in love and knew it was what I was meant to pursue. So I did a BLS course and finished top of my class. The following year I was accepted to study a bachelor of emergency medical care but dropped out half way through the very first semester because of how much I was struggling to cope with my mental illnesses once again. That was in 2017. My self esteem was battered. I internalised my “failures” as being unworthy and incapable. Last year I was diagnosed with ADHD and have since been getting treatment for it. This year, at the age of 26, I decided to try give university another go and it has been an incredibly daunting experience for me. I stopped dreaming big because I was scared that I would keep failing and that would further affect my mental health. I’ve just finished my first semester of first year undergrad, doing a BSc in physiology and psychology, and to my surprise I’ve been doing really well. I can feel my confidence and self-trust coming back slowly coming back. Was hoping to find any advice that could be relevant to me and came across this video. So I thank you for sharing this with us. It’s probably going to a long, challenging road ahead but I know it will be worthwhile. Thank you again. This video is extremely encouraging

It's nice to hear a happy ending from someone who struggled to get into medicine....the thumbnail of this video said someone like me couldn't get into medicine....what confuses me is if someone said that statement to me I would immediately think of and associate it to a BME student as majority of the GEM courses are of non-BME students

Thank you both for this video☺️ Sarah your quote about how we don’t just get one chance, we get whatever it is we make of the opportunities we have, really resonated with me. Given me the extra push to get my head down for the next two months of GAMSAT hell! Thank you both xx

Thank you for doing this interview, it means a lot to hear of someone getting success coming from a background of education like that. I was never well enough to do any exams growing up, but it didn't matter because I was going into IT as a career... But at 21 I found that I hated that career and that I wanted to switch to medicine. I wanted a more fulfilling career that would be academically stimulating and had an outlet for human connection/empathy. That was in late 2018 and every day since that day I decided to switch, I've been working to get what I need to attend my access course. I got As in all GCSE subjects I took year before last, and I'm now (vaccine pending) waiting to attend my Access to Medicine course. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can do this. I've spoken to a few med schools about my situation and Ill be elligble for extenuating circumstances for lower entry requirements. But at the end of the day, and as Phillymed's story illustrates so well: medicine is a journey, not a destination. I've had a lot of setbacks along the way, college messing up my exams, and other life setbacks which has made it difficult to do it in a shorter timeframe. But I'm starting to come round to thinking of: who cares? At the end of the day, this is what I want to do, and I will stop at nothing to get it. That's what counts. If it takes me 5 years, amazing. If it takes me 10, I don't care. So long as I dont waste those years and continue to work to make myself the best future doctor I can be, then none of it will be wasted. Eyes on the prize. Keep up the great content, both!

This really hit home for me. I'm still quite early on in my medical journey, but I can truly relate. In high school I really enjoyed learning, but towards the end of my secondary education I found myself spiralling into a pattern of behaviours where I would give up on studying for a class because I felt "what's even the point if I don't get the perfect grades?" I would skip classes, fall extremely behind, disappoint my teachers and my mum and I gave up entirely. I didn't study for my Year 12 VCE exams (Aussie equivalent of A-levels in the state of Victoria) and I just thought, oh well. I'll just find a different job. I had dreams of becoming a psychologist but just gave up. My mental health plummeted and I ran away the next year to live in the UK. My mum and family/ friends understood my turmoil and supported my need to explore the world and myself, thankfully. A few years later, I'm planning on applying for a degree in nutritional science next year that will hopefully get me into a post-grad medical school. I have spent the last few years travelling Europe, making so many beautiful friendships and I found my husband & cats. I have discovered new found motivation and drive to become a doctor, something I NEVER considered in the past because I thought "oh I have to be a Type A, highly driven, ultra intelligent person to become a doctor". After years of low self-esteem and self doubt, I am so happy where my journey has taken me and what the future holds. Good luck to everyone on their journey! 💜🥰

Hi, Doctor Nice video really Sorry because my question seems irreverent for the video subject. I just wanna ask if you have idea about is Postgraduate training (training programs of specialities) are good in UK or not? Are they as good as USA for example? I need to choose to do postgraduate training in one of UK or USA but till now, i did not find a good comparison or something like this
