I got a synchronized transmission for my 1929 Ford Model A Roadster, we toured Steve Mitchell’s shop

The manual transmission that’s in my 1929 Ford Model A Roadster has a couple of teeth missing which has made shifting gears a bit weird and hard at times, so me and ‪@ModelA‬ went to Steve Mitchell’s shop where he got me all set up with a new synchronized transmission along with a bunch of other cool stuff to go with it, then he took us on a tour through his shop!
Steve Mitchell is the overdrive king and now I know his shop and the things they make there are beyond what I could have imagined, even the machines he uses are old and very cool!
I know this video is a long one, but there’s so much great information that Steve shares that it’s worth the time invested!

    We all know the quality of the Mitchell products. But seeing this Mr Mitchell's knowledge, passion, and pride in the work and workmanship are proof of the reasons why. Thank you for this behind the scenes look. In another life, I'd have been a Tool and Die person, this was absolutely fascinating. Have a blessed Sunday ~ Chuck

    I have a Mitchell synchronized transmission in my 1930 Model A Roadster. Works great. Had a bit of problem with installing the shifter rail seal. Bell housing had a small hump in the casting in the inside that kept seal from seating. Had to grind bell housing some to get it to fit. Luckily I had engine out for rebuild which made bell housing modification easy.

    I had an issue with the Mitchell synchronized transmission at first. It would jump out on high gear on deceleration. Called and talked with Steve Mitchell. He was very helpful. He said that shift column plate had to pushed as far forward as possible. Instructions say that. Anyway ended up cutting off the top part of the transmission to bellhousing gasket just above the transmission case. Works great now, no more jumping out of gear.

    3:27 Spoke to Steve on phone and he said under no circumstances use 600w in his synchronized trans. He said in warm weather a modern heavier oil ok if you want a little quieter transmission. So far so good after 6 years and 4000 miles with 85/140. Never drive under 45degrees F and mostly short trips. Had to remove paper gasket between front of shift tower and bell housing to keep from jumping out of gear. Ford tolerances were not consistent on this area. That little bit of forward movement worked. Seal it with something else. This and the automatic spark advance make a model A easier to drive. 3. 27 rear gears makes the car cruise at 50 MPH with good motor.

    Where the transmission case has original porosity and the shaft o-ring will not seal on the bore of the housing, could JB Weld be applied to the case bore, and reamed to size when hard to provide a sealing surface for the o-ring? Another approach would be to make a bushing, bore the case and install it with a sealant and interference fit. Then the bore can be reamed to the size needed for the shaft and o-ring.

    Hi Tina! Great video, and not too long at all. I loved learning about everything they do there. One question I had is regarding the shifter lever finish Mitchel provides. I believe Steve said his are brushed nickel. Do you or Paul know if that is the same as the original Ford butler finish (which I thought was a brushed chrome)? I can’t find any information online to confirm if the two finishes are the same. Seems like all the shifters out there are either rusted, shiny chrome, or painted! Thanks!

  • @Modeltshinn

    @Modeltshinn

    The original is brushed nickel and that is what Steve is using, he uses original stick shifts and rebuilds the area that is warn down from years of use so that the shifter stays locked in gear instead of loose and wiggly. Have an awesome week!
