Hey everyone, thanks so much for watching! Just to address some of the comments regarding the lack of study for my MA… The MA awarded to me was a Cambridge tradition and of course it is different to the Masters degrees awarded through examination which some of my friends stayed on to achieve. As regular viewers will know I decided not to stay at Cambridge for the integrated MSci for reasons well documented. What I have been doing is studying to be a qualified actuary and I await results for the last two exams needed to qualify. The Cambridge MA will not benefit my career but the actuarial exams will! There are many Cambridge traditions which I’ve been proud to be part of and I’m not embarrassed to embrace. My friends and our families had a great celebration which was special as (like many other students) we were unable to do so before due to COVID-19 related restrictions. This MA is the final chapter in the authentic Cambridge experience which I have loved sharing on this channel.

A little more humility or transparency might have helped. You are liking comments from people saying what an achievement! Your BA was the achievement, this is not an achievement. And the title of the video makes it sound like you earned an MA in the usual way. To label it correctly might make the video more intriguing for the 99% of people who have no idea Oxbridge students get this upgrade. I don't think you've convinced yourself you really have an MA, but the way you've presented this and written a defensive statement about how it's not going to help your career is a bit weird. I've been watching your videos from the start and never seen you do the shady stretch the truth influencer thing until now. Having a delayed ceremony because of the pandemic is important but no justification for the way you've presented this video and liked comments about it being an achievement. This isn't 'hate', it's honest feedback, you don't have a master's degree. But that doesn't mean you never will, who knows what the future holds.

It IS an achievement though, this is a result of finishing a cambridge undergrad degree. And the title isn’t misleading at all, she did get a masters from cambridge. Sure, it’s not your usual masters degree, but it’s a masters nonetheless - and she mentioned that in the video. As for her pinned comment - why is it weird she said this isn’t gonna help her career lol? It obviously just means that people are aware of the fact this honorary MA isn’t the same as the ones awarded through examination (i.e. no one’s getting ahead bc of this tradition) There is no reason whatsoever for you to be this pressed. go touch some grass.

It only applies to the UK's ancient universities (ie founded before 1800) and is long-established practice. So, other more Johnnie-cone-lately institutions decided to order their degrees differently and want Oxbridge etc to change their rules! Actually an LLB at Cambridge has long been a second degree in Law (BA in Law first, then the LLB). Other UK universities give LLB as a bachelor's degree. Should we ask the recent institutions to stop what THEY are doing ...?

Stephen Fry once wrote an article about going back to Cambridge and wandering around his old haunts and feeling a bit depressed. He met one of his professors who reminded him that it was to be expected as his Cambridge was made from the people who were there with him and now it belongs to others. I know what he means but I don’t entirely agree with him. I have been part of the place more than once. On my own, through the the vlogs of people like you and Holly and Ibez Mo etc…and most recently through my daughter who you might recall interviewed you over at Medwards. She is talking about Med School now! Anyway congrats on the MA good luck with professional exams and continue to enjoy life and friends and Cambridge. All the best.

To all those who feel it’s unfair that Paige got her “free upgrade” to an MA: I have a Masters from Harvard University that I worked hard for, but I feel no bitterness. I am delighted for her. Firstly, we ought to appreciate that it’s a centuries-old tradition of an ancient, prestigious university that was established long BEFORE our type of postgrad masters came into being. So maybe what’s weird is that universities that came LATER decided to name their postgrad degree an MA. Secondly, if you want the same, “just” get into Oxbridge, survive the tremendous rigours of the course, and graduate. Then as a student of this wonderful university, you get to be a part of its long-held traditions, of which this “free upgrade” is one. If it were so easy to get a free Masters, why doesn’t everyone do it? Because it’s REALLY difficult. So let’s celebrate this with her and quit whining.

Roughly: back in the day, when universities were few and far between (in England, that would be Oxford and Cambridge), you ended up as a Master of the Arts more or less for being there for six years. Mainly preparing for a career in the law or the church I think - hence formal dress including academic or clerical bands but I think they're optional now for graduation. The 'Bachelor' thing was an intermediate stage after three years. Newer universities came along with three year degrees with exams for BAs so Oxford and Cambridge conform to that but also keep the MA thing around. Cambridge does have masters courses, but none of them are MA. For example, Astrid returned to Cambridge and achieved an MPhil in Renaissance Literature and in Natural Sciences you can read for an MSc. To make the nature of the MA clearer, you're expected to refer to it as an MA(Cantab) or MA(Oxon) and never as just an MA.
