I’ve been in education off and on for 15 years. Just came back this year to teach HS but recently resigned. I did the “quiet quit” thing. Not staying pass contract hours, not arriving early and not grading a lot but that still didn’t resolve much. The behaviors at my previous school were out of control largely because my former principal was incompetent. Extremely large classes, no materials, students weren’t held accountable for disruptive behavior. My breaking point was when a student threatened “to shoot the school up” and of course nothing was done. We had no security, no one watching the metal detector so students would just go around the machine. I love teaching and will miss a lot of my kids but the system is not conducive for success. Save yourself and may God bless you on this next journey.

It doesn’t matter where you are…..this crap is everywhere. Every school. No time to pee, no time to eat….meeting after meeting after meeting…waste of time. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, continual criticism. Not one minute to answer email, the hateful emails that followed when I haven’t even seen the first one. The last straw, being locked out of copy center because principal’s grandkids were there playing. Oh the stories I could tell. Oh and NO supplies I didn’t pay for myself.

U need to make vids even if u don't show yourself just record the stories and add a background of a classroom lol. You'd help a lot of people and bring awareness

Don't feel guilty...teaching used to feel wonderful, even though the pay has always been too low. You have made a difference but God doesn't want you there... it's too much ..He will give you a new purpose...I know...I was you!❤

I also was a teacher in Texas and I left after my first year and everything you mentioned is exactly how I felt. I was literally running on fumes everyday with 3 to 4 hrs of sleep, consumed with school life pouring in to personal time. I feel as a teacher it’s less about connecting and being in the moment with your students but instead being drilled and ridiculed on performance. There is literally no time to get everything done effectively with 22+ students and without assistance. Sad to see a lot of teachers share the same experiences. In my country we have up to 40 students in each class! Students are disrespectful and disobedient! I decided to quit after my second time teaching because I felt that this occupation is draining, emotionally and physically!

Thank you for your honest and truthful experience. I can tell you that the majority of us teachers feel the same as you. I'm trying to get to June but this will be my final year teaching. Lately, I've been thinking about time. I work anywhere from 60-80 hours a week. That's 40 extra hours I'm not getting paid for, 40 extra hours I could spend reading, watching a movie, going for a walk, going to the gym, going on weekend trips, going out to dinner with friends and family. But I never do these things - or feel an incredible amount of guilt if I do - because teaching takes too much of my time. It occupies my brain when I wake up and before I go to sleep and pretty much every moment in between. It takes up my evenings and weekends. I want a life, and that means, sadly, that I need to leave teaching. It is sad, as you say, but the current education system is deeply broken and running teachers into the ground.

I’m a first year teacher and high chance this is going to be my only year. Everything in this video speaks way too true to me. Like alarmingly half of the video was just word for word things I’ve said and has been said to me. I’m just so damn scared to quit but I know if I keep going like this I’m going to fall apart. This video was honestly very inspiring and hopeful for me.

Same here. 1st year and probably my last. I'm also in Texas.

Our school is constant letting kids leave early for sports, clubs, one cannot keep track of who is leaving for school functions, absences, etc.-its crazy. There is very little learning going on. What happened to just teaching? Thus, I just turned in my LOR today. I look forward to working in a job I can check in and check out and have a weekend!

When you described how admin disrupts the learning process with extra and unannounced activities, I really could relate. Happens all the time in my school. We, the teachers, are told to create a curriculum plan with dates and hold to it. But, no, the admins can come in and wrech that. It’s as if they are saying to teachers: “Take teaching seriously; but, we won’t”. This is just one of the reasons why I quit also. I wish you the best and that you can return to teaching on better terms.

Gonna respond to your video since it’s the most recent one I’ve seen. I quit my teaching job after 4 months I was working at a charter school teaching 4 grade levels and 4 subjects. After awhile the unrealistic expectations, the amount of work demanded from the teacher to extra work after school was beyond my salary >> 46000. I knew being a teacher I was not gonna get rich but I did expect a healthy live style enough time for myself and family and was the complete opposite. There is more money to make if I’m working 60 hrs a week only to make 46000 a year

I remember prepping for my tests with your videos and I like to periodically come and see how your doing. I feel like we started at around the same time. I read your title and just new. So many amazing teachers are leaving. I also teach in Texas and it has been so hard. I’ve questioned my career multiple times this year. I wish you the best of luck. For me, when all is said and done by whomever, self-preservation, and always has been, the first law of nature! If you don't have yourself, and the whole, healthy you, then they have nothing. It's really simple. There was a teacher who was so stressed out, one day he came to work, had a heart attack and died in the classroom. While, needless to say, the ambulance came and took him straight to the morgue. He was replaced the next day! Now tell me, which is worse, him quitting because he was stressed out or having died because of it. Use common sense people! Don't ever feel guilty and let no one guilt when your health, mental or otherwise, is in jeopardy!

Bless you! I know this is hard especially when you have been whipped up to being part of the TEAM! That same Team would toss you under the bus, if needed! Do not feel guilt for leaving! Never feel guilt for leaving a job! A job is a job and not your family. You are doing what is right for you. Just you! I’m sorry to see you twisting yourself in a knot over leaving. Find a job that suits you. You may be surprised what you end up doing. All companies and even airlines hire teachers to teach in their education departments. Keep us posted, you are a smart educated young woman who is going to be a success. PS Think outside the box 👏👏👏👏👏👏. ❤️

When you are single and self supporting, theses are extremely frightening moves. Many people stay in bad situations because of fears. I can tell you have a good family that believe in the power of education. You worked hard and got that education. It is transferable. I could not be more delighted you have found another position. Oh my goodness I am in my 6th year teaching in NYC, and it has gotten to a rough start. I desire to leave mid year as well, hopefully after mid winter break which happens end of February. I too am struggling with the guilt of leaving the students and staff stranded. I am at a different school, and all the staff appreciate me being here. But, I was deceived, my school hired me not telling me that I'd be essentially a replacement teacher. Its' December I am burned out. I have been researching career strategists, and recruitment staff agencies.Thanks for your video!!!

It is so sad that the modern public school system has become so toxic and downright abusive for amazing, dedicated, hard-working teachers like yourself. When the system drives out great teachers by the droves, something is VERY VERY wrong!!

Baby if the school toxic then it can be draining as hell….a work friend is great but work friends would be even better but the school setting is a lot.

I understand completely, I’m a first year teacher with an infant, it’s hard and I have 4th graders that can’t read and as far as STAAR I have to ‘figure it out’ not to mention the admin basically hazing because they wanna see if I’m going to break

oh my gosh. This is frightening. I am about to enter the alternative teaching certification program to teach. To know that admin is basically hoping you fail as opposed to assisting and make sure the students are thriving is a warning sign to me! Thanks for the transparency.

Girl, I totally understand. I'm contemplating leaving before the end of the year due to a combination of reasons. I'm just wondering...did you let your students and parents of your students know that you were leaving? I'm trying to see how I should go about my exit plan. I do plan to give the school a 2 weeks notice. I'm really over the education profession at this point in my life and want to step out and explore other work opportunities

Yes. My principal told me that I had to tell my class so they could have closure. I told the kids in person and sent an email to parents. It wasn't an easy thing and I felt a lot of guilt and cried with them. I have 2 other videos on my channel where I mention this. If you're interested, check them out. Best wishes 💜!

I recently passed my Art certificatiom exam and aiming to teach Art now. I think the core classes bring an extreme amount of stress. I'm hoping Art teachers don't go through so much of the politics and stress that the core subject teachers do. Can anyone help with this?

Tbh I think anyone at a school goes though it. I was an ell teacher and an elementary grade level teacher. Both roles were terrible. I had multiple jobs at different districts/schools in my city and it was always the same. I had to quit for my safety and financial success. Best of luck to you, but I always caution people to stay away from teaching.

You’re right. I taught Spanish and was cool with the elective teachers. Of course you’ll still have your own challenges, but you’re right - it’s a bit different/less from the core teachers.

Congrats on passing your exam! I have taught both elementary art and high school Ceramics so far; it is my second year teaching. When it comes to elementary art, I really do believe behavior worsens once they get to electives because they think it is time to go wild and have all of this fun without their teachers (which of course we do have fun) but classroom management becomes so difficult to maintain. All elective teachers on my team agreed that we were less of teachers but more like baby sitters just trying to get students to follow simple directions. I was the youngest teacher in the building and many veteran teachers told me that todays generation of kids were so disrespectful and difficult to manage, even for them. I switched to high school ceramics which was my college concentration so I was so excited and felt things would be different working with older kids. Initially, it was! It felt like a DREAM compared to what I had just left and I felt so lucky to have gotten that job. Though after a few months, I started to loose motivation to keep going when I had to constantly deal with parents angry about their student's grades (students who refused to do anything), students ignoring their clean-up tasks (which in a ceramics classroom, is so important!), and students who felt the need to question authority and constantly argue with me about very simple procedures and rules. Although this environment was much better than what I left, I really started to ask myself if these were things I wanted to continue to deal with on a daily basis. At both levels, overall, I just felt like the kids didn't listen. No matter how fun the class is and how little you ask from them, all the kids want to do is be on their phones and go against any authority. In the beginning, it was an awesome concept to teach art because I thought students would particularly enjoy my class and listen to instructions so that things could run smoothly; but unfortunately I was wrong. And although there were many beautiful moments I was able to have with some students, the amount of discipline that was needed definitely outweighed the good in my opinion. I feel as though things were much different years ago. I am currently planning not to return next school year. I do want to say that things differ a bit from school to school so it is possible you could have a better experience! Good luck!
