I Found The Rarest Bird I've Ever Seen, on my lunch break!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I have been trying to find this rare bird in my city for the past 6 week and finally managed to catch up with it on my lunch break.
This is a Leucistic Cormorant and I would say it is the rarest form of any bird I have ever seen so far.

    I have to say that this was one of my favorite videos. Kind of the spare of the moment, go get the video, type of thing. Also, as for your last video I was thinking, I know you’re the bird guy usually, but it would be really interesting if you did a video about the dragonfly. They are just so amazing. Anyway, thanks I really enjoyed this video, not about people just about the birds. Thanks!

    NICE! Several years ago, I saw the famous leucistic Red Kite at Gigrin Farm, and I later found a news clipping completely by mistake saying there was a second one in South Shropshire. I was lucky enough to get a shot of the one at Gigrin Farm alongside a regular one, which I jokingly dubbed as a 'shiny' Red Kite with the standard variant. The only other bird I saw was a partially albino blackbird on my way to work one day, completely unafraid of me; I was within 3 feet of it easily.

    Good work, Liam. Never heard of a leucistic cormorant but realised straight away that's what it is. We've got one or two leucistic jackdaws in the local royal park and a few years back had an albino robin in the garden for one season. Possibly got predated as it was so easy to spot.

    It may be more successful at hunting than the black version given that when looking up at it from below it should have a less noticeable silhouette (like a great white shark).

    Perhaps, they don't usually dive out of the sky like some birds do, instead diving from.the surface and swimming after fish. I would guess it will depend on the clarity of the water.

    They're actually perfectly fine perching on such structures, some species nest in trees, especially the continental (eurasian) great cormorant (P. carbo sinensis), Atlantic carbo carbo can nest in trees too, and perhaps historically did so much more often, now it's mostly in mixed colonies with sinensis from what I understand.

  • @relicthominoid

    @relicthominoid

    7 ай бұрын

    If you're from the UK, they're two different species of cormorant, the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the european shag (Gulosus aristotelis). The great cormorant is larger, stockier and much more versatile - being able to live in both marine and inland environments, while the shag is a marine specialist with a more feathered face and gracile build. In Australia/NZ it gets more complicated as explorers brought the two words but asigned them interchangeably between not-so-related species of cormorants, even calling the great cormorant (same species as in the UK, just a different subspecies) the black *shag* etc.
