Somthing about these vids are so just chill. Personally if a location is a certain distance away and even harder to find oneself, then I believe theres a filtering that gets done to lessen the people willing, capable, able to make the journey.

The last comment is spot on Hannah. The saying "if we don't use it, we wouldn't care about it." is quite true for most natural resources. That said, ensuring that there is a net positive effect is really important, and as content creators which promote ecotourism etc, there has to be a constant emphasis on responsible usage. Giving people a sense of ownership when accessing these areas will make people going the extra miles to ensure that they stay the way they are. Good job as always.

One of the most Gorgeous youtube video intros I’ve ever watched. The editing , the shots, the music 20/10!

When I first watched this video I was sure that the "stock footage" was the Irohazaka Winding Road near Nikko (a long way from Osaka). I've traveled both the up and down roads by bus. The skill of the drivers is something to behold. Looking more closely I realised that not only is traffic is going both ways but they are driving on the right so it's not even in Japan. But it sure looks like it. Great video and the drone footage of the waterfalls is simply stunning. The scenery in the Yoshino area is some of the best I have seen.

Great footage! Chris's drone footage was amazing! Can we learn how long the hike is or ways to get there? Can we see more lifestyle in city with Hannah/Chris? Do you have any more trips planned with subscribers? I don't see much wildlife, is that normal in that area? Keep up the great content. So interesting!

Spot on. Even the audio of the fpv drone waterfall shot, the streaming water sounds more prominent near the waterfall itself and fading when flying from it. Well done Hannah.

It's definitely a complicated subject. Even as a car person, knowing that great driving routes get ruined by high exposure (e.g. Romania's amazing mountain highway being reduced to a queue of tourists after it was on TopGear), it's wise to be mindful of this stuff. I do like the approach of only halfway pointing people to where a stunning spot is because either they go and find it themselves or they end up exploring the local area much more and possibly finding somewhere else they love instead.

I think the barrier to entry needing a car is enough for Japan. 95% of people won't take a care that deep into Nara. Mie prefecture also has some stunning vistas. Soni Kogen Highland is stunning in November when the Pampas grass turns yellow. Go at sunset... you won't be disappointed.

Anyone who's financially able to afford to travel to some waterfall in Japan on a whim can probably afford to locate the spot through the magic of the internet.. With very minimal clues about the spot, it's entirely feasible to have the exact coordinates within a few clicks.. All that's required is to be at least halfway resourceful in general and not be afflicted with the results of a superfluous chromosomes and abracadabra! It really is that easy. The exception to this, I'd guess, is very obscure and remote mines which are commonly featured by explorers here on KZread and it's an unwritten rule among these explorers to not divulge the locations, and for good reasons.. See, the fact is that some of these mines and abandoned mining camps are located so far off the grid and not included in any maps to the point of being all but impossible to find without exact coordinates and the content creators are wisely choosing not to share that information due to the high likelihood of novice explorers injuring themselves or others who are dispatched to their rescue when they're inevitably finding themselves in a precarious position or worse which they weren't prepared to extract themselves from, resulting in a shitty situation for everyone who finds themselves obligated to be involved in. Therefore, in these circumstances I believe it's appropriate that the content creators who specialize in exploring old forgotten and lost mines to keep the locations secret. In this case, it's merely gatekeepibg predicated on the idea of others possibly ruining the experience for everyone. And yeah, that's a valid concern but again I don't believe that the type of person who is financially responsible enough to have amassed enough wealth and prosperity to travel to remote swimming spots on a whim would be the type of person who would just waltz up into a spot like this all willy nilly and start discarding Pringles cans & Coke bottles in this type of place - I just don't see that being part of that type of person's moral fortitude. Of course, it's not like wealth is so hard to inherit that there wouldn't be trust funded d-bags in that group who have no class nor moral fiber who could conceivably afford to make it happen, but I just find that to be a less likely type of person to put their time into such an excursion and to put forth the efforts required to do it, all just so they can chase some clout, obtain receipts (selfies) and ultimately defecate the place up to the point where it's noticeably ruined.. Especially since you were considerate enough to address that concern here, which could (should) preemptively shame these theoretical potential affluent ruffians from abusing the locale. But anything's possible. Well, that's my unsolicited $0.02 anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My philosophy when out in nature is: to leave it better than you found it. Whenever your out and about exploring mother nature, bring a bag and pick up any garbage you find on the trails. I know you touched on this, but it's worth noting that we can also take a moment to keep our planet clean even if it isn't our trash, with as much as it offers to us. Gate keeping is so negative, this is our planet to share and take in. Moments like these are better shared with others. I think what you're doing is good, Hannah. We appreciate all you do to show us the road less travelled in Japan.❤

I think it's great to tell us viewers where 'sort of' the location is - meaning not giving us an exact pin etc., I think then also the beauty remains of knowing roughly where it is and then venturing out and discovering the area yourself is the best anyhow! Because quite often one would discover some spots you might not even have seen when you were there etc.

I think in your case it's pretty chill to reveal locations, because your audience is mainly (I presume) not in Japan. Therefore, the amount of people with the opportunity and resources to visit the places you show is limited. Not only that, but to truly overrun a place ppl would have to be visiting at the same time. I don't think that's going to happen.

Beautiful video as always. The swimming pools and waterfalls look fantastic. The views of the dam were great. You could not get me to live in the valley under the dam wall for any amount of money. I've watched too many Thunderbirds shows as a kid and I'd be paranoid about the wall breaking. Thanks for another amazing video.

I think Google map tags and co-ordinates can make it too easy to go and 'get that shot' rather than go to explore, get immersed and really appreciate the place. Maybe it comes down to why someone is sharing the location, is it because they genuinely want others to enjoy the location, or because they know sharing these locations will get clicks/views. Beautiful video as always Hannah, I have to watch on my TV to enjoy the quality but unfortunately that means I don't comment much anymore. I'm really enjoying experiencing Japan through your videos and hope I can go to a couple of these locations some day 😊

The places in this video reminde so much of where I live in Oregon, USA. Crystal clear turquoise water, surrounded by green tree covered mountains. Japan is so beautiful. I hope to visit someday to see the gorgeous country that my Grandmother was from.

@@missplainjane3905 1) I find this question very interesting... because I've been to big cities like Tokyo and Osaka... and I've also visited rural area like Shiretoko, Yamadera, Miyako Jima, ect... and I find the contrast between big cities and the rural /remote area very striking. So to answer your first question... Yes! but it didn't lose his charm. 2) I am not an expert and I've only been to Japan twice and each time I spent a month there. I think every country has its own culture...and Japan is a very old civilization with a long history including the Sengoku period, the Mongol invasion, the fall of the Shogunate and so much more. From the your list I think I can only rate technology as a 10... as for the rest I think there's discussion to be have... It's soo much more than just attributing aa number to them... 3) Again... I noticed people in the big cities seems to be more shy in general (speaking as a tourist here) and as a contrast, people in small villages seems to be more welcoming... there's a warmth to them that the people from big metropolis doesn't seem to have. But in general...Japanese people are very polite, couteous.... and seems to live as a big society ...which is good but could also be bad... I'm Candian and I live in a society where people tend to valu their freedom and seem to always think about themselve first and just disregard how others view them. I just feel like Japanese people tend to live more in a mold of their own society... 4) Past, Present, Future.

I feel like a good compromise between showing where exactly something is and not disclosing the location at all would be to say the general area it is in, maybe marked with a big circle on a map. Encourages actual exploration of nature and adventuring for people that are more interested in that particular spot (which might lead to people finding some other place in that area that they like and either don't go to the original spot they wanted to go or they go there multiple times to explore further) and deters people that are less interested/ don't want to spend a lot of time finding it or don't want to do additional research themselves to pinpoint the exact location. If something requires even a little bit of work, it can greatly reduce the chance of people going.

Oooh this is a really great idea. I see some people on Instagram doing something similar which I really appreciate. The best places are the once’s you stumble upon (like the swimming spot on the first day). They’re made that much better because we had to work hard for it ☺️

Not a bad idea but TBH with the ease and availability of satellite images and mapping data it's actually pretty easy to find locations with enough landmarks to go by. If you ever played GeoGuessor game for a while you start to realize this. There is a bunch of youtubers for example who have been able to pinpoint exact locations based on a single photograph, let alone multiple landmarks. Though i guess that could be part of the fun for some people. There is a reason why most youtubers now when doing videos of their home make sure to blur any out-door shots as even a few simple landmarks like a building in distance and certain trees can be enough to find someone on a map. I feel bad for KZreadrs who don't realize this then get that creep who pinpoints where they live and starts stalking them and all.

I thought of the same idea, circle is enough for travelers like me, i will scour the area to find this or potentially better spots. Sometimes mindlessly exploring can make you stumble upon good things

It’s a bit hard to access and it’s kinda famous and crowded so maybe it doesn’t go with your taste, but the water is really really beautiful and they conserve and take care of its nature nature very well

As a teen, I was shocked to learn that a friend of mine would just throw her wrappings into the wild. My family was always big on hiking, so taking my trash back with me was a given in my world. Sadly, it isn’t for everyone and some people only see potential Instagram likes where we see beautiful nature that needs to be preserved. However, I believe that not sharing the information wouldn‘t educate those people as well. So the best you can do is what you just did: tell people where this place is, but also to be mindful. Put the information into context, tell it as it is. It won’t change all of the people, but maybe at least some. :)

About gatekeeping nature spots... I'm Costa Rican, love hiking too and here's my silverlighting: someone can pin or even advertirse a spot so people visit it but Not everybody likes to hike or walk through the jungle or swim in freezing water. So just a small percentage may want to actually want to drive there. It happens alot in my country. The extra mile taken by Hanna, which I agree is that people who recomend a nature spot should remind us not to leave trash or to leave it cleanner .Love your aventures Hanna. ✨

That’s such a beautiful place. It’s a tough call as to if sharing is a good thing. On balance I think your sentiment is right, enjoy the location but don’t spoil it.

All the drone shots are just...*chef's kiss* Places like this are why I want to get an international driver's license and see the places you don't normally see as a tourist. I also think just renting a car in a foreign country is enough of a roadblock to keep these hidden places from being overcrowded too (especially for us Americans).

Haha yes renting a car is a whole extra step further for a lot of people when travelling to Japan. That necessity alone is enough to keep most people away for sure!

I kind of understand the dilemma about telling or not the location of a nice spot. Yes, I can understand that you want to "protect it" and keep the nice location quiet with less tourist and preserve nature, but at the same time, that would just put more pressure on location that are already on the verge of over tourism by not showing alternatives. One place I would actually recommend is south of Nara prefecture, like the area around Kashihara and Asuka, for example to do the Nara-Yamato pilgrimage, just to go check four temples in the area. Can take some time to check out local historic neighborhood, check some of the history museum, stay in a ryokan of minshuku somewhere close to one of the temple. That is easily 2-3 days to spend in Nara... yet some people would say that 1 days is more than enough for Nara and they just visit Nara Park.

I have had a lot of experience in this dilemma. There's this waterfall i've been going to for YEARS. its a great, little-known gem here in Tennessee. I loved it mostly because it was never so crowded as the more popular places around it. But lately, its become more known, there's a lodge now at the top and their developing houses and so on. It made me very upset, and my first reaction was, "well, there goes my favorite swimming hole." But over time, ive come to the realization that it really is for everyone, sometimes thats for the benefit, and sometimes its for the worse. I still go there, just not as much as I did. But I understand what you mean, hannah. It's a strange line to walk between "everyone should know about this!" and "I don't want this to become so flooded with people that I can't move". There are a couple of places I just won't go to anymore, because they are so main-stream and packed with people it actually becomes dangerous. Keep up the good work hannah, in the end, its public space, and nothings going to keep people from going there if they want to.

Hannah, was the Storyblocks clip from the Nara region you were visiting? On the question of revealing the location,our take is that if you explore, you will find outstanding sites that are not on anybody else's radar. The greatness of what you found was by virtue of your intrepid hiking and thus should belong to your own experience in the same way that your enjoyment of a restaurant is mostly the enjoyment of your dining partners. So I would say, Japan (or any place) has a lot of beautiful places, and your perception of their beauty depends on the context of the discovery. So, I would recommend, as you did, point to a general area and leave is as exercise for viewers to discover for themselves.

I'm a Japanese from Nagnoken about which you might know better tourist sites i here than I do.However, let me suggest to you that you can find a lot of good spots for swimming in the deep mountains here,too.Some are pretty big water fall basins with transparent and freezing cold water even in midsummer, and others may just be midstreams in the rmountain rivers although cleanliness and coldness are almost the same Please come again. We are wainting for you. Well,Regret to say, it's not until a couple of weeks ago I came to know about you by chance. Since then I've been fascinated by your videos taken around the world.
