The Britannia 50p issued by the Royal Mint has a design featuring the image of Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles. The Britannia 50p coin from 2008 is a low-minted coin.
Low-minted coins are those that have been issued in smaller numbers than other coins, often due to their popularity or a high demand for them. This means that there is a limited number and is therefore rarer and more valuable than other coins of the same denomination.
In 2008, the Britainnia design was replaced by the Royal Shield design. The 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016 and 2018 coins are all non-circulating legal tender (NIFC) coins, meaning they are not intended for general circulation but are collectible coins only available to purchase. The 2017 coin is a low mintage coin, meaning there were fewer coins issued than in other years, but was still issued into circulation.

So glad you video'd it. I just love Kew finds and what a way to find it. Well done! The hunt itself was amazing! I said it a few month back on a livestream that a Puddleduck find and Kew Gardens find together is incredibly common, it you go back and watch other finds. I always get optimistic about a Kew when someone finds a duck.

The 2009 Kew Gardens (mintage = 210,000) 50p is NOT the rarest UK coin. That title goes to the alphabet 10p's of 2019. The highest mintage amongst them is 84,000 - with a couple as low as 63,000.

Oh no, did I hear you say you do NGC 'grading'? THE single worst thing to ever happen to this hobby - 'slabbing', with its FANTASY 'grading'. The same terrible thing happens to banknotes - I've bought a couple of 'slabbed' banknotes, and then cut them out, in disgust! I only bought them because they were cheap. When I see a coin in a 'slab', I call it a Plastic Coffin, because that's what it SHOULD be called.

You've got me mate; you've caught me checking 1997 50ps as if they're going to be anything but Britannias. If that's the biggest thing you've got to shake your head at, you're living the dream. Here I am, making videos, sifting through coins for that rare find, and there you are, pointing out the obvious. Cheers for the heads-up! Honestly, I wish my life was as straightforward as a 1997 50p. Imagine that-no surprises, just Britannias all the way down. But hey, where's the fun in that, right? Thanks for keeping an eye out, though. Let's hope the next coin hunt brings a bit more excitement for both of us!
