i have always lived in the us and my best friend always lived in the uk, we were friends for over 6 years online until me and him both put money in for him to fly over to the us, he lived with me for 6 months before he flew back home, while he was over it was a 50/50 of either real names or online names, it was kinda just muscle memory to call each other online names and it didnt change at all over time.
