Sort of yeah. It was more, they has a circular hole, and a circular peg whose diametre was a fair bit smaller than the hole. Instead of buffing out the peg to be more inline with the hole's diametre, they squared it off. It fits the hole but isn;t snug, and leaves a lot of room for want.

When someone says "forget everything you know" what they are really saying is "forget everything you like."

We've seen it all before. 1) It releases horribly. 2) Whistleblowers (rightfully) call out horrible work practices while making the game. 3) Executives apologies. 4) Promise 1 year roadmap to make the game better. 5) Although executives reassure what little fans there are that the game will not be abandoned...the game is abandoned after 1 year. 6) Release "leaks" about next grift to get Ubisoft fans excited. 7) Cycle repeats.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine an awesome pirate adventure. Following treasure maps, raiding ports, swinging on ropes onto ships, drinking grog while running away from the local constabulary, exploring jungle ruins. Okay, now forget everything you thought you knew and open your eyes to a pirate game with none of that.

This makes _Sea of Thieves_ look like a hardcore immersive sim. How much do you want to bet that docking your ship leads to a hub area where everyone shows off their cosmetic microtransaction purchases? I don't believe that the dev team wanted this; it has Ubisoft's feces-stained corporate fingerprints all over it.

Haha! Well luckily for me I think I can enjoy it. Especially like I enjoyed “King of Seas” and this seems like a super version of it. I just don’t think I’ll enjoy the multiplayer aspect of it.

If Ubisoft was really having such a hard time figuring out a direction for this game to take for years it sounds like, then they really need to do some restructuring and putting new people in charge.

25:53 The mission tells you all you need to know: You're disembarking on a big ol' multi-man boat to go a couple miles away to "get a jar of oil for a dude". This would be like hopping in an 18 wheeler to get a scented candle from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I don't get why they seemingly started from scratch, I really feel that just taking ACIV:BF, removing the AC element from the game, then building up on that would've resulted in a great game and would've been what most people wanted. It was probably Black Flag that got lots more people wanting a pirate game after all.

This just makes me realize that we need a reboot/next gen Sid Meier's Pirates. Still my favorite pirate game and really the only one that gives you a vertical slice of all the classic swashbuckling/pirate stuff that you associate with it. Treasure hunting, ship battles, duels, wooing governors' daughters, trading, sacking ports, etc

Sid Meier's Pirates is the best game nobody talks about. I wouldn't even be asking for as much as a reboot. Just give me the same game with expanded content and I'd be happy. Given the current state of Firaxis though, I wouldn't have much hope in them getting it right. Next favourite 'pirate' game would be DioxineX Piratez for XCom. However I don't think it's what most people would consider a pirate game.

This game is like an object lesson on the Sunk Cost fallacy.

Watching your ship magically collect resources by simply going next to the island is totally mobile game material😂 Like seriously why even include that unless you let us walk around the islands…and since we can’t shouldn’t we just play black flag or odyssey?

Honestly, I just wanted a modern Pirates of the Caribbean (Sea Dogs 3) Xbox game. One of the funnest Pirate games I played. You could steal ships and add them to your fleet, explore cities and fight on land. Buy and sell stolen ships and goods. All they needed to do was that with Ubisoft modern graphics. Not a hard concept 🤦‍♂️

It's always amusing when people say "i don't mind if it takes them long to develop the game, at least it's gonna be released polished". It doesn't surprise me at all how the game is. If the development takes too long, they are not polishing anything. It means there are some problems with development/production.

Even the in game characters looked bored walking through the harbor lol

There are lessons to be learned from every game in development hell. This was a disaster because management had no clear vision and kept chasing trends.

Imagine a huge open-world game set as being a pirate. you need to spend time and energy hiring in crewmates, make sure you're able to disguise your ship in case you run into a privateer group or Country's Navy, etc. And then also have something to spend the money on and go full Rated R about it with Tortuga style pirate-ports, booze, prostitutes and lavish living. Just raiding for money for the sake of money to spend on 'ship upgrades so you can raid more money' sorta makes me think it's some bullshit lootbox type sensation 'endless gameplay loop' that can ruin a game i might have looked forward to.

Sea of Thieves has come a long way. Captaincy update coming this month will be a big deal and the Adventures they've been releasing every few weeks have been a great addition.. and enemy wise you have the skellies, phantoms, sirens, kraken, megalodons, and more. If someone just did a realistic version with more plater ships it would perfect. You guys should try sot again when the new season comes out

This is a very minor thing, but look at how the flags behave in relation to the sails. At 23:51 where you're in the lookout's POV, the ship is theoretically being propelled forward by wind from the rear, but your flag is being blown backwards by the same damn wind. XD It's a small thing, but if you have any idea how sailing ships work, it's immersion breaking in a very basic way.

Dude, Black Flag was released NINE years ago. So for nearly a decade they've had the road map, the code, and everything just sitting right there in front of them to simply improve upon. "Underwhelming" isn't nearly enough to explain the catastrophe this game will be. I don't understand how they can come out with a new AC game every year with a new story, new location, and some new features....yet after this long, they couldn't figure out how to add onto the core mechanics to just make Black Flag an even bigger and better game.

I've been playing black flag again recently and it's really disappointing to see how that game did pirate ship combat way better. When you board a ship, your crew would pickup muskets and fire onto the enemy crew until you get close enough to swing on ropes onto their deck. Then you'll engage in combat until you kill enough men. That was always so much fun.

Can't wait to see the micro transactions in this game. Boosts: collecting materials, exclusive crew, faster xp gain. Exclusive ships n custom upgrades.

Yeah, they were 3rd party that had no association with any military, but were given permission to act in the governor’s behalf unless caught. Pretty much they were bounty hunters that walked the fine line of legal and illegal.

and watching that trailer, a question came to my mind.. umm, so, where is that dark and gritty? All i saw was even more fantastical and quite cartoony world than most of the earlier games. If you say dark and gritty, i want to see actual seriousness and grimdark atmosphere. But well, it is UBI.. so yeah, i always keep my expectations low anyways. Maybe it is just me, but i'm pretty much disappointed about most Ubisoft's games at this point

There's a lot to say about this and most of it revolves around the disappointment, but as for the Indian Ocean I don't really have a problem a pretty massive chunk of the Golden Age of Piracy was actually targeted towards British and Dutch East India company targets in the region as well as various Indian Princely State. What most people think of when they think of Caribbean pirates was only about a decade following the War of the Spanish Succession.

I am not a historian by any means, but I would imagine all the trade going through the Indian Ocean because of the wealth and spices in the Indian subcontinent, the East Indies and China; it makes sense that piracy would be more lucrative in this region. Sure, when we think of piracy, we generally think of the Carribean during the 18th century with dudes like Blackbeard, but when a guy they called "the King of Pirates" made his big heist here, I don't think the setting is as bad as they make it out to be. It's a little dry, but if they had just done more with the setting they ended up with it could've been the big "oh, forget EVERYTHING you know about pirate fantasies. This is going to be a REVOLUTIONARY pirate game!" they were going for.

I agree. The 'Pirates' movies have definitely made pirates feel synonymous with the Caribbean, but there was a ton of piracy in regards to the spice trade out of India. This gives them a chance to explore a different variety of piracy, and focus more on parts of the world that are a little less represented in video games. I don't think this game looks 'bad', it just looks kinda... 'meh'. And maybe that's the best you can expect for a game with a development cycle that sounds like it could rival Duke Nukem Forever...

All they had to do was re-release Assassins Creed 4 with an updated combat system and updated and improved ship combat. Without the Ac story and, improved graphics...

It's like that everywhere. I work at a bullshit car wash and even there, the bigwigs don't listen to customers or front line employees. We were handing out Google review cards for a bit supposedly to hear from customers, but then come to find out they only posted the favorable reviews. It's just bean counters making the rules for product/service delivery across the board. When it comes to what actually works, they don't give a daaaamn.

The company is literally being told by their target audience for YEARS for they want to pay for and they aren’t delivering smh. It’s make or break time and until we see swordfighting we ain’t buying

I feel so bad for devs who put YEARS of their life into making a game: only for it to come out like this... Edit: Yes I know they still get paid, but I'm talking about fulfillment.

Bro they got paid if your a dev that wants to make a big and magical game that you think will inspire people, your defiantly not working at ubisoft, you work at ubisoft for the paycheck. Ubisoft is the 1# game studio I would say are never innovators., at least not anymore Assassins creeds climbing system was a innovation I am saying this as a dev who codes, but ever since AC unity ubisoft has been a dead studio, they killed beyond good and evil 2 the only game ive seen from them trying to innovate, even EA innovates, ubisoft just copies other people and even themselves at this point but doesnt get what made those ideas great.

They literally release the exact same sports games with a few name changes here and there every year and even their other projects like the star wars games are just derivative of other games. Sure, at the end of the day the paycheck is also important but I don't believe for a second that not a single dev working at ubisoft hasn't got at least some passion for making video games, otherwise they wouldn't have gone into such a stressful industry in the first place. Ubisoft wasn't always shit so maybe it was their dream going up to work for them on their favourite franchises, the devs are not to blame for the choices the management makes

I see what you did there

Tactical, realistic tier-one operator games where you fight drones and get colorized loot drops with increasingly more powerful versions of the same weapons; games about historical leagues of assassins where you fight mystical beasts and aren't an assassin (and can't even wear your signature hood during combat) and are bad at stealth; games about modern urban combat special forces units where you fight alien zombies from space that cover you in goo; and now games about pirates where you somehow don't swashbuckle, plunder forgotten treasures, or even walk the plank... It amazes me that modern day Ubisoft is still a functioning company. One of the biggest gaming companies in the world. Incomprehensible. Can't wait for the Crew 3 where, I assume, you will mostly walk around on foot and maybe race the occasional bicycle.

That filter and duplicate for the cam work is freaking awesome. It actually looks like 3 different people!

This game’s so forgettable Angry Joe forgot the whole video he made on it

I bet Ubisoft just finally kicked this one out the door to not deal with the dev hell it has been in.

Watch Dogs 2 was fun, but I try not to support a studio rife with misogyny trying to claim it's apolitical despite pointed politics in their games. Especially when said games are samey and lacking.

27:05 to 27:30 Pretty much sums it up. You have no idea what you should be doing for like 7 years, then the guys paying you are like "Show me SOMETHING", so you squeeze out what you can put together in 1 or 2 years.

The main character is actually the ship, and the captain is its puppet. The ship sends the captain to outposts to do its bidding. This is what they meant when they said 'forget everything you know about pirate games

To this day Black Flag remains my all time favorite pirate game. Most other pirate games after never really impressed me and so far this hasn't impressed me either.

I can't think of a better pirate game honestly. Modern Sea of Thieves is DAMN close, but it's all multiplayer. Black Flag was just the perfect pirate game. You could go anywhere, stop and hop out seamlessly onto any island! Upgrading your ship, controlling the fleet, pillaging other ships, fighting forts, building up the Iquana Cove. It was so good! Shit, I wish they just made a full on remake of 4! I haven't played Rogue yet, so fuck it, that will be my new pirate game. Skull and Bones looks so lame in comparison

Pirates of the caribbean online was my all time favorite and to this day nothing has come close to it. The game now has a small player base but still super fun to play.

10:29 "And take advantage of their weak points to deal more damage." That is just as obvious and boring as the Massive Enemy Crab. Like it should go without saying. The fact they stated it outright is a warning in and of itself that they have no other features worth touting.

Fun fact: piracy in the Indian ocean was EXTREMELY prevalent, just as much as the Caribbean. Mughal Empire (India) ships would be OMEGA rich. Henry Avery, a famous pirate, made his fortune when he plundered a Mughal ship on it's way to Mecca, and basically retired after that (it was also the biggest score captured by any pirate). I actually love the setting, it's different but also accurate.

@@digit861 It doesn’t look bad, it looks fucking terrible. It looks exactly like a more polished Ghost Recon Wildlands, graphics wise, which launched in 2015ish. It’s unpolished, boring, uninspired, based on a minuscule gameplay element of a much better, older game (Black Flag battleships) and it’s horrid. Honestly, how can Joe not be “a nonstop negative whiner” when he is looking at this garbage? I honestly do wonder how you take one small comment he made on the setting (which is true, you think Pirate, you think Jack Sparrow, you think Carribeans) and extend this to the whole video as him being bitchy? He is right. This is so ass, as most of Ubi’s shit has been.

This company has less and less to offer to their customers. Year after year its either the same or poorly executed developpement / ideas. Ridiculous.

Nah pirates actually had more unspoken codes of honor than these trash corporations. For instance most pirates, especially during colonial rule, often only pirated from the crowns trading companies, not stealing credit card info from some moms wallet for microtansactions.

the only thing we wanted was an Pirates of the Caribbean experience game, and it was in trailers of 2017 and 2018...

A year ago, I thought this was 1 hour ago haha.

“Forget everything you know about the traditional pirate fantasy.” “Oh, so I should just forget about sailing, fighting and getting rich off of plundered ships?” “…” “Okay, bye now!” In all seriousness though, your commentary has more appeal than anything in this trailer. While they were needlessly negative about things during the video, I feel they really got it when they said "I would have been really excited about this in 2016, etc". This game screams "the perils of development hell". It has potential but its feels overbaked and ripe for MTX from executives despite the good work the devs have been doing.

This game had an amazing build up from starting from a little ship to getting a big one! And having NPC crew! That’s so amazing! And then the gameplay is just you sitting in your boat shooting objectives while your NPC bots roll and rng dice to see who wins the boarding battle.

6:08 I like that they are inspired by the Indian Ocean. Piracy was worldwide, not limited to the Caribbean. There was tons of piracy down the west coast of Africa, and other places too.

Huge missed opportunity. I don’t understand why you can’t board other ships or explore islands. How cool would it be if you could engage in Pirates of the Caribbean-type duels with other players and the winner gets a sum of gold? Edit: The game we wanted is represented in the 2017 trailer with some added Black Flag sword combat. The game we got is just…disappointing.

Stuff like this really makes me wish I was a fly on the wall in the meetings between management/executives. Feels like every single major studio either has morons leading them or incompetent people who can't convince the suits to trust in their vision of what the game should actually be. Either way, it's clear they aren't suited to do their jobs appropriately.

@@David-ys4ud That isn't how software development works. You have a project manager whose job is to essentially function as a middle manager between the dev team and the actual company executives. They meet with the executives to discuss project goals and then relay that to the dev team to work on. This clearly looks like those discussions led down the wrong path. A senior dev/QA team could have been telling them these ideas won't work or aren't compelling enough after testing but if the project manager can't convince the execs to agree with this, you end up with this shit. It's their job to convince the money men that they need more resources (time/money/personnel) to complete the job. Every single thing you see is cleared by upper management. If they had problems with it then they would have said something before any of this was shown to the public because there is way too much money riding on these projects. Nothing about this game looks like it's broken. It just looks like the people making the big decisions couldn't come to an agreement on what the game should be and that's why it went through development hell. You blame the construction workers if your light fixtures aren't fitted properly or if your wiring is borked. You blame the architect when the building's design is fundamentally flawed and it caves in on itself.

@@David-ys4ud You should really take the time to look at some of those "What happened/What went wrong" series here on KZread. Almost *EVERY SINGLE ONE* of them has to deal with incredibly terrible management from the top level. Just look at Anthem as an example. Not only did that game suffer from a lack of direction, but the higher ups made the developers build an RPG in the Frostbite Engine, an engine designs for shooters i.e. the Battlefield franchise. The developers had to spend months retooling the engine just to make it work, clearly setting the project back.

The one thing I noticed was how bad the ocean physics looked, even sea of thieves has that down and is probably one of the better part of that game.

the game "Pirates of The Caribbean" was made long ago and that game had a whole fort attack and so on you could trade some stuff be banned in the one country and not the other. pirates be going around, there be fights on the ships and forts and you could go into tunnels on the islands. yet now they cant do the ground fights and any sword play? very sad.

I know this video is a year old, but actually looking forward to seeing your review of this one now that the game is out. Especially with all of its still very prominent backlash surrounding it.

The problem I see is this game seems like it couldn't decide if it was going to be an action game or a strategy game. If this had been designed purely as a PC RTS game where you frantically try to control everything happening on a large pirate ship. That would have a lot of potential.

I've got a felling nobody will be playing this after a month. If they had a more in depth game like black flag or with sid myers pirates. This could be something special. But it's going to bomb.

Well, they succeeded in making it dark and gritty. What’s more grimdark than being tied to a mobile prison, forced to watch your NPC crew have fun?

As a pirate game, Skull & Bones is literally skull and bones.

Couple of things, Guessing the guy opening the chest was the lootbox animation. I heard the reason the game was made was that it was one of the consensus of ubisoft putting of putting a building in Singapore, supposedly they are claiming this is not a AAA game but a AAAA game which is why they are charging so much, and last was love seeing your reactions to the reviews you do, keep up the awesome work Joe, other Joe and Alex.

The way ubisoft makes its game is like SpongeBob drawing a circle

It feels to me like, initially they tried to make Skull and Bones, they couldn't, so they went back and grabbed the Black Flag engine and recreated Skull and Bones in it. And now they're trying to sell that as if it was the Skull and Bones they initially tried to make. The sad part is, if this doesn't make money, they'll say something like "well, pirate games don't sell well" and abandon the franchise.

from what they said the only time your not on the ship is at port for resupplies. everything else like ship boarding and whatnot is cut scenes.

I noticed that too, the guy stops his ship and turns like 180 degrees in a matter of seconds. Just stupid. They've got to cater to stupid kids who would wind up getting frustrated at why they cant drive the pirate ship at 100 knots and pull a 360 no scope, so now its dumbed down for everyone.
