I must say, it's quite unsettling that there's so many internal parts on this engine that are sensitive and break easily or wear out easily. This is a Mercedes Benz, you're not supposed to have so much easily broken internal parts. That being said, I just love your attention to the smallest detail... Mercedes-Benz is nowhere near what it used to be. Their reputation was made based on the w118, w123, w126, w124, w140, etc. From about the year 1999 onwards the corporate pennypinchers caused a steady decline in quality. Same for bmw. Same for volvo and jaguar. From then on the quality King was Lexus.

I've been a tech for a long time and I guess lots of us are just used to combustion engines, and because we understand how they function it seems like they are simple, but when you really take them apart you see how incredibly complex and detailed they are and how amazing of a feat of engineering they are. I've never taken apart a cam phaser even though I've changed dozens. Just the machining of it is such an intricate masterpiece.. and while we know it's all done by programmed machines at this point, the first one ever done was done by a person by hand or with multiple trial and error runs. Truly unbelievable and it's why I'll NEVER get rid of my cars when the electric world has taken over.

Wow, Alex!!! That is one incredible "how to" for that engine... actually, it's a great guide as to how you should approach any engine (re)build. I've never had the fortune to actually do that work except for helping a buddy of mine waaaaay back build a monster Pontiac 421 with a high lift cam, tunnel ram and a pair of 780 Holleys. Of course, it took a few days to sort it out. With 13.5:1 pistons and the high lift cam, we kept bending pushrods. So, we opted for a lower lift cam and it lived, much to the chagrin of the owner of the gas station across the street whose alarm we were setting off at midnight. That old GTO had a roll cage, full tilt welded steel front end, etc, etc. He sold it after winning one race.

Alex’s journey with getting this thing back in action required more miles than the replacement engine had on the odometer….how’s hat for irony. That thing is a beast of a ride for sure when all is working. Another fun LSC escapade.

Im really happy to see you finally get an engine that was not grenaded! Im also happy to see that you are taking care of all the service issues up front for the new owner. Because we all know the person that wins the thing will never properly service it.

My old school torque wrench from my grandfather is two sided. It has 1/2" on one side and 3/8" on the other side. I have a decent 1/2" torque wrench for critical nuts and bolts and then I have a full set of Harbor Freight torque wrenches. I have the 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4".
