I finished my Nerdy Gurdy! | part 3 (TIMELAPSE + PLAYING 🎵)

Музыка

Finally, the Nerdy Gurdy is finished! In this video I'm taking you through the final part of the build, the set-up and... playing it! Also, I'll be attending a workshop where I learn how to play it, which is really exciting!
The Nerdy Gurdy is a DIY build kit made from lasercut plywood and 3D-printed parts, to build a basic but fully functioning hurdy gurdy, which is a medieval instrument that has some similarities with the modern day violin.
I bought my kit here:

I can't even tell you how reassuring it is to hear you got the same "shriek of the damned" from the bourdons that I did. Four months since I finished my gurdy & I'm still tinkering with strings, cotton, rosin, tension & height. My dog still won't buzz. So don't despair, you're far from the only person to face a long fight to get their instrument sounding right.

Thank you for making this little series of videos! I saw the nerdy gurdy kit while looking for more budget friendly options to get into playing the Hurdy Gurdy but gave up on the Nerdy Gurdy because I thought it required actual woodworking still, with like bending wood and sawing pieces and such. Seeing that it's mostly just gluing pieces together and sanding them to fit better is a big relief. I'll probably be going for this option after all once I'm ready to make a purchase (which is much sooner now! ☺️).

2:44 … improvised clamps! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!! 👍 Kudos to Jaap Brand and his Nerdy Gurdy! It gets a basic, functioning hurdy gurdy into the hands of enthusiasts that don’t have the thousands of dollars necessary to buy a “pro” model…

You'll find it easier to play if you use a guitar strap adjusted so that it's rather tight around your waist. You did a VERY nice job. It's common to have trouble with the upper trompette, to the point where most people don't even bother with using it. There's really no need for two trompettes.

Thank you! And I have a guitar strap and already tried to use it, but with that one pin at the right of the rear end, the gurdy kept tilting forward. I'll try it with using the other strap pin soon, after I changed the strings. 🙂 And I heard more people complain about the upper trompette, so I won't be too bothered if it keeps shrieking. 😉😋

Gezonde muzikale groet vanuit Finland. Bastiaan Anthonie Baaij

Love your laugh at 0:16! Am working through my Nerdy Gurdy Linotte build and am enjoying/appreciating your videos. I actually came across them looking to see just how loose the keys should be. I suspect that you had to enlarge the holes in the key box (2:06) because you painted it, which added an additional thickness to the wood (along with possible grain raise from staining the keys.) I used a dye stain (supposedly finer particles than regular stain), and was testing fitting a few, to see if I'll need to sand down any grain raise.

First of all, my respect you built it till the end, I considered to build one, but didn‘t even start :) I think you need a strap on it to hold it in a safe position and I recommend you putting a cover over the tangent-case, so you can rest your thumb and put the needed power and concentration on pressing the keys … anyways, just curious what sound you might get out of your build once used to it. Respect!

Hi Marijke - Great job! 👏 It's an amazing instrument! When you played it at one point, the Nerdy Gurdy sounded like several bagpipers playing in unison on a parade field. 06:07 I'm sure once you have it set up properly, “it will no doubt sound [more than] decent," and like a procession of proud bagpipers - reminiscent of the Great Highland bagpipes native to Scotland. 👍😊

I tend to comment on youtube in English but.. ik ging stuk om "wat een kút geluid", die zag ik dan weer niet aankomen 😂. Seems like a tricky learning curve on a perfectly set-up premade instrument, definitely trickier when building it all yourself! Props to you! Hope you get it figured out to a point you're happy with (and for us to inevitably enjoy seeing you play!) 👍
