I finally read a YA book after 4 years and I hated it

Ойын-сауық

Divya Reads. After 2 centuries I finally finished a series - and I hated it.
A discussion of how Renee Ahdieh's duology - The Wrath & The Dawn and The Rose & The Dagger represents a few YA tropes that I just can't stand anymore. I also do talk about aspects that I enjoyed.
If you don't agree with my opinions and you liked the books that's completely fine! I am happy for you and respect your thoughts. I just couldn't stand the main characters if I'm honest with you.

One thing I found weird as an afterthought was that on the first night Khalid asks her if she's aware that her death is inevitable and she says that yes and that she's not suffering from any delusions. But then the morning where she's being strangled she slaps him out of the blue as if he misled her all this time?? I was like "????" They both knew that this was going to happen whether she liked it or not but that morning they both act as if it was a preposterous thing ?? I loved the romance personally but this point bugged me a little.

@Ange no I agree but she acts like he betrayed her last minute when he already warned her on the first night not to try any tricks to get out of her "destiny" to die. She acts hurt when he doubts her as if she herself wasn't trying to kill him. I guess u would understand what I'm saying after u read it

To be honest why can't people just be in love with each other, no love triangle needed. The relationship with them is enough because it could be developed well and send a good message about how relationships should be. Why would you make a love triangle instead of a truthful and well-written relationship?

When I heard what's this book about, that she falls in love with a killer of her friend and hundreds of other women I immediately said I will never read it and what's wrong with authors writing books like that. It sets an image in young girls that it's ok if your boyfriend/husband is psychotic and hurts others. It's ok, because he "loves" her. She won't leave him if she has bruises or he cheats. It's the love...

I never hated a book so passionately as I hated this one! It began so interesting and promising but as soon as she started to fall for this murderer I wanted to throw the book out of my window. No explanation in the world justifies the murder of these innocent girls including her best friend. Spoiler: With the curse and all wouldn't it have been the best decision for him to die anyway? No Khalid = no curse. And even if that wasn't the case, considering the options, that would have been worth a try. When Shahrzad started to fall for Khalid I got so angry. I mean there is nothing interesting or attractive about this guy. I don't even know what made him fall in love with her. She isn't any more special than the other girls he didn't have mercy for. I don't understand Shahrzad. She wanted to kill him! How can you love someone who is guilty of killing your best friend and a lot more innocent young girls for nothing in the end. (It wasn't even worth it because he didn't go through with it.) At one point she asks herself if something was wrong with her for feeling that way. I can answer that: Yes, there's something seriously wrong with you Shahrzad! I mean what the hell?! You can't be serious! He even raped you in the beginning! Remember? You could have killed him when you had the opportunity but instead you decided to make out with him, that seemed like a better alternative after he KILLED YOU'RE BEST FRIEND! (Nothing can excuse that, even if the author tried very hard to convince me otherwise) This was not what I hoped for when I read what this book was about. It sounded like an awesome story about a girl being strong and smart enough to trick the caliph and avenge her friend, while she told many, in itself, interesting oriental tales.

Having true strong female lead is so rare but when I read a book like that mannnn 💕💕😆👌🏻 my compilation : - A girl which wasn’t « badass » physically but because she was courageous and kind - a girl which kill for survival but understand how loving was the only true way to be strong - a girl which wasn’t described as « special » or « not like every other girl » ( hate that trope) - A girl with a reverse harem ( basically a lot of guys she choose to love)

Jadein Anthony LMAO, but I would prefer the funny guy in the story (like Leo Valdez from Heroes of Olympus) that has constantly emotional pain that he doesn't force in everyone's throats, but hides for the sake of saving his friends and the world, and cheers everyone around him, supporting his friends when they are getting all the praise, but also knowing that he can and is jealous, because the character is as much human and has emotions llike everyone else. The one that never loses hope in his friends, but is constantly doubting himself whether or not he is in help of his friends, then realising that he is as much important. The character that isn't as dramatic. Idk I suppose I described Leo Valdez. :D

I love the YA age-category, because I feel like it's becoming the most diverse with super-colorful content, but omfg, there certainly are SO MANY trope-y, bad books in there. *cries* And so many of them are hyped as heck - actually, some of the most hyped are the most atrocious novels lmfao. As for The Wrath and the Dawn, I wasn't able to finish it. The food description was A+, so were the dresses, tbh - but the romance was awful, and I so hated the characters. Shazi was 10000% ready to murder, and then like two days later she was falling for the guy even though she still thought he killed tons of girls, including her best friend. HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE. Smh. Also, them sleeping together after they married, when she basically shut down, and didn't feel anything... I consider that rape, idc that she didn't try to stop him. I'm so mad this is so famous *cries*

I had to translate the original (like the backstory part) for my minor Arabic and every ten lines I was like what? Am I reading this right? Am not fully done watching your video but right now I only know that what I got from my translation was - The brother of the King finds out his wive has cheated with the black slave (he finds this out as he prepares to leave to visit his brother the king (who is feared by everyone and therefore a Re al Respected Man TM) He then casually murders them both. - He spends the whole way there thinking about how life is unfair - He gets there but he is miserable and doesnt eat anything because his murdered wife is a whore and that reflects badly upon him - The king is worried about him. They were planning on going hunting together but the king's brother has to contemplate how he Has Been Wronged. The king sets out to go alone - (this is where it gets me) Then the brother spots the kings wife and 20 female slaves (10 white 10 black) going out of a secret door. Then they all undress: the 10 black slaves appear to be male slaves. The King's wife calls a black men who then jumps out of a tree. They all proceed to have sex immediately and they continue all damn day - The King's brother watches this all go down and is very happy that he is not the most disrespected man in the universe anymore because his brother was discrespected by 21 women at once. That akward moment when none of your 21 girfriends have the basic decency to be loyal to you. - The King's brother starts eating again and gets straight up fat. The king gets back from his hunting trip and notices. He asks him: I tought you were homesick but you seem fine now, what what wrong with you? and the brother goes: i really shouldn't tell you - then he tells and they decide that they are going to leave home and not return untill they find someone that is more disrespected then them. - They encounter a girl and a seamonster. The girl is like "You both have to sleep with me or i will call the seamonster" and they are like "nooo lady please we beg you" and she is like "you have to" and they are like "ok but only because there is no other way" and then when they are done she wants their rings. She explains that she gets the ring of every man she sleeps with and that she already has 98 so the ring of the king and his brother make 99 and 100. Oh and that the sea monster stole her on her wedding night and locks her in a box every night to ensure she was his and only his (as she was still a virgin then) but that nothing and nobody can stop women from getting what they really want. - They laugh and conclude that women are the literal worst and they pity the poor poor seamonster that even stealing a virgin and locking her up every night doesnt protect you from disrespect. - The king returns home and orders the execution of his wife and all the slaves and also all other women in and near his palace - If you sleep with a virgin then murder her she cannot disrespect you so heey looks like we found a solution When translating I had no damn idea, I tought 1001 nights was about flying carpets and shit but the majority of it is how black men are out to steal your women, who cannot be trusted. Then i googled to find out how come 1001 is not known to be this weird and low and behold: the west is mainly acquinted with an english translation of the victorian era so they take all the sex parts out And for some reason some consider this a feminist work? because sheherazade has like agency? I don't know it was a wild ride translating it, it was only 10 pages or so so the weirdness was not spread out very well * watches video to see if the contemporary version is worse or better than the original 14th century fuckery that I "read"(sloowwwwly translated as i cried above my desk) * * Is back after watching * Doesn't sound nearly as bad, in the story she is the daughter of the guy that actually does the killing (the king doesnt want to get his delicate hands dirty) and she is like: you have to give me to the king. And he is like if i give you to the king i will have to murder you tommorow. And she is like: pleasse dad give me to the king. And he agrees and then eventually the king decides to not murder her because she seems decent * the end * Would have made for an even worse novel so technically this is sorta a feminist step up?? maybe i dunno

I found myself rooting for tariq honestly and shazi isn’t a strong female lead in my opinion considering the fact that she easily falls for that brooding mysterious murderer and allows complete chaos to happen as a result. also the side characters like jalal and despina were more likeable and interesting than shazi and khalid lmfao

Thank you. Now I'm gonna annotate everything to make sure I don't write it in my stories, because, truth be told, I agree with everything. (Also, nice video, as always. I must say I really like your editing style! It's clean and funny. And so are you -whatthehellamitalkingwhatdoescleaninghastodowithyouimstrange )

Can you read the Wake trilogy by Lisa McMann & do a review on it? It’s a unique series in my view & not like most YA books.
