It's also brilliant because the album opens with "don't you think that it's boring how people talk?" and then the original ending (where the last song was A World Alone) ended with "let 'em talk"

When listening to this album for the first time retroactively it's important to consider the context. When _Pure Heroine_ was released in 2013, it influenced and changed pop music with its subject matter, tone, sparse electro beats and minimalism. Kinda ironic as it was made on a tiny budget and basic equipment. The colorful word pallet is impressive considering she was 16.

Exactly and she basically mentions that lyrically within team with The hands up in the air reference. It is also tied in with royals about the socials scene of Hollywood. I like to believe lorde was the “not like the other gIrls (‘artists)” of that time period. This album is great at incapsulating a moment in time in your youth while simultaneously speaking a lot about mainstream media and Hollywood.

The way that Pure Heroine changed and influenced most of the pop musicians is amazing. Back before Pure heroine was released the pop genre is always this bubbly club songs, and then Pure Heroine came and introduced this soft and minimalistic production and breathy voice. For those people that'll comment that Lana did it first, I truly agree, but Lorde greatly changed pop music since her debut.

For me what makes Ribs so sad it’s because makes me think about a friendship that just vanish in time, because laughing in bed and having fun without any responsibilities it’s like another world now, and the way she repeats that will never be enough makes me really sad, reminds me of a friend that I used to have :-( And when she says is scary getting old, for me it means getting out of being just a teen with time to kill and pointless drama to a world where you have to be responsible, work, and everything starts to change

During "Team", the line about "I'm really over being told to put my hands up in the air... so there" refers to early rap/hip-hop music. The emcee would say, "Put your hands up in the air, and wave them like you just don't care". She's just being cheeky and rebellious, basically.

Lorde was 16 years old in this time I think and was released on 2013, and her music is really ahead of its time, like you cannot hear anything this kind of theme in its era, what a unique and her lyrics is so poetic for her age, she’s so smart then after that she changed modern pop music.

The deep themes of this album are about social revolution, and young people revolting against the patriarchy, yes. Also, this album describes her reality in a way that no other pop artist was attempting to do at the time. She doesn't want to pretend that she owns tigers, she doesn't want to drink crystal in hotel rooms (even though she sort of leans into that lifestyle in her late teens), she doesn't want to hear 'put your hands up!!' at a concert anymore. She wants something new, she's not pleased with this world. she's coming for everyone.

this album was released when lorde was 16 or 17 and the whole album basically is about being a teenager and being scared of growing up and famous people. in my understanding, in glore and gore she talks about fame and the extents that famous people go, in ribs is about being scared of getting old, in a world alone is basically feeling alone, but having this one person you can count, 400 lux is about liking hanging out with someone and feeling warm, white teeth teens is about never fitting in with the popular kids and team is about having your friends there for you and being in the sidelines of everything

My personal opinion (please don’t attack me) on the track Buzzcut Season is that her friend has brain cancer. Where the beginning is her describing the chemotherapy her friend is enduring in hopes of killing the cancer. Some chemo patients describe it as a burning/fiery sensation, where one of the side effects is the friend losing hair. Lorde then consolidates her friend by saying “well you laughed baby, it’s ok. It’s Buzzcut Season anyway.” This points to the premise of the song being about how even tho they’re on “borrowed” time, they’re living this tragic and mundane existence together. This may be so wrong, but I just wanted to add to the discussion 💖

You can find the original version of "Swingin Party" on the 1985 album "Tim" by The Replacements. Paul Westerberg said about his song: "One of the reasons we used to drink so much is that it was scary going up on stage. That's one of the things 'Swingin' Party' is all about on the album ... how it is a little frightening to put yourself on display all the time." Also, a 'swingin' party' in the US could refer to a hanging.

Ribs is so repetitive because it is not about heartbrake but about nostalgia. It goes back to some of her childhood memories and how she goes over them over and over again, ending on a cycle of her just really longing to go back to simpler times (very 2013 way of feeling). This nostalgic feeling is also reprrsented through the repetition and cycleness of the music.

Confusion... I haven't actually listened to the whole album, will go do that now 😀 You definitely don't come across as stupid, you just tend to look for literal interpretations which is harder with lyrics like these 😊 at least you actually listen to the lyrics!
