My name is Kaiya Pelletier and I am documenting my metal journey as I discover and listen to metal music for the first time ever. I'm in my mid 20's and I've been a singer songwriter and performer for over 10 years. Currently I live in Stillwater, Oklahoma and I am in the process of recording my 4th album. I have a Bloodhound named Spooner, I love Mexican food, collecting Stephen King novels, collecting CD's and cassettes and my favorite movies are tied between Jurassic Park and Alien.

Essentially a jazz fusion act, using the sound palette of Florida death metal. Real innovators. Love them

Way ahead of their time, along with Cynic and Nocturnus, they were pushing what death metal was and would become.

So glad to see people still checking out Atheist. I grew up in Bradenton (Tampa area) in the 80s and knew a couple of the band members a little bit, so it was awesome seeing the hometown band achieve some success. Their 1st album 'Piece of Time' is still impressive for the time, but 'Unquestionable Presence' is a unique monument to creativity backed up by the technical skill to pull it off. One of those rare albums where it leaves you thinking for a few minutes after, then you immediately want to hear it again to see what you missed the last time.

This was my one of my favorite death metal albums growing up. I wore out my cassette and was finally able to get a hold of a CD and had to pay a good amount of $$ for it. I think I had to buy it out of a relapse records catalog. Good to see that young kids like yourself are listening to the classics!!!

Atheist Jupiter was one of my favourite albums when i was in middle school on 2012. As I was 15 this shit shaped me with another way. If you want some challenge try Imperial Triumphant. This guys are trio from NY and playing some dissonant jazzy metal about 30-50's imperalistic America. This guys are some nutcases and throwing some interesting stuff.

Honestly I'd say the only difference between "Prog" and "Tech" is that for the majority you will find most prog bands to be not as heavy. When I think of Progressive Metal I think of bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Threshold. As for Technical bands I think more along the lines of Technical Death Metal. Like when I hear the word "Tech" it always right away makes me think Techdeath.

My favourite album from Atheist is Elements. It's quite unlike anything else they've done, basically latin/samba rhythms combined with techincal death metal, never heard anything like that before or after. So infectious. I'd suggest to listen to a short instrumental called "Samba Briza" followed with "Air".
