When I was younger, I was at a game store and they had a GameBoy Player with the start up disc for about $60 and a complete in box copy of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance for around $35. I only had enough money to get one or the other and went with the GameBoy Player. In hindsight, that was probably one of the best choices I have ever made.

In my case I was in high school and I bought at game stop formally known as EB GAMES for 19.99 with the disc and the player. Today is May 14th 2024 and yet I still have it 🎉🎉🎉

I don’t know if you know, but there are homebrew solutions for the disc too, and they have SIGNIFICANTLY improved video quality over the OEM Nintendo disc. All you really need is a copy of Zelda Wind Waker.

They are well worth it. I got mine with the startup disc for about $120 USD probably about 3-4 years ago. Feel i got one at the right time. I use GBI (gameboy interface) to play games on my gameboy player though nowadays instead of the stock startup disc.

Ever since I began collecting, the gameboy player was my most wanted item

god, this is my favorite gamecube accessory. i have not gotten it but i just would like to imagine myself playing all my favorite gameboy games on the television without any crazy mods and such. unfortunate this is pricey but i want this very badly so i would not mind spening the 1 or 2 hundreds

@@snipebp though I did not get one I did get something even better, the retron 5. It can patch, save state, and play several other consoles as well

If you have gameboy link cable that you'd use for something like four sword adventures, (link port one end gamecube plug on the other) you can use your gameboy as the controller for the gameboy games instead of trying to use the gamecubes smaller dpad

I was lucky with those pieces. I bought the startup disc in a GameCube lot for 50€ (with 5 more games included Pokémon Colosseum and Metroid Prime) and the Player for less than 40€. It was something that I really wanted! I also have a Super Game Boy for SNES, let's say that I'm a lover of those accessorizes 😂👍

I got one of these last year and I decided to get the Japanese console, disk and player for like 140. It cant play american gamecube games till it gets a region switch, but was well worth the savings.

1:27 - only when you have no way to boot into swiss. from there you will only need the gbi application. booting into swiss is possible without any soldering at all. f.e. with action replay and gecko sd... or using some ingame bugs in f.e. wind waker or animal crossing. if you are good at soldering, picoboot is also an option and will cost you only about 10 bucks in total. using gbi you will have a much better experience than using the official game boy player startup disc.

I have two GAMECUBES from back when I was collecting, I do NOT have a boot disc however both are modded to boot "backups" so I use a copy of the boot disc which works fine.

for my gameboy player i actually bought it full in box with original case for the disc and bag for the player from japan for around 100 dollars and then added a regoin locking switch on my gamecube so i can use it. gba games arent regoin locked so it works with american games.

You could buy the Japanese starter disc for much much cheaper even with the import fee. But you need a modded gamecube that reads both US and Japan gamecube games.

@@haroldbalczac6431 The US disc work because you had a US Gamecube. The Gameboy Player for Gamecube doesnt matter US or Japan because gameboy games are region free. What i meant was if you buy a Japenese disc you need a modded gamecube or it won't read it. Either way did you play gameboy games on the switch yet? I know its limited to what nintendo gives you. But OMG looks amazing! Check it out.
