My current sketchbook is this one too! I don't know how I feel about it though, I feel like it's huge even though it's not and that's kind of throwing me off a bit 🙃. My last sb was the ohuhu one and I really enjoyed the paper in it. I might use the rendr one next or get a handbook one (the 5 x 8 ) 🤔

I feel that view on sketchbooks so much. Like the idea of, no I can only use one sketchbook at a time and when it's done I can start a new one, but not before. And that would extend to pieces also. Less for digital, but for traditional art I'd have this feeling of, I cannot start a new piece until I've finished my current project. It left me feeling like I lost a lot of ideas, tbh. This year is the first where I'm just letting myself draw whenever, whatever and in whichever sketchbook or paper samples I have. And it's interesting, I've found that I've been creating way more, because I just, capture ideas as I get them and finish them as I feel motivated. So I might have, 3 paintings and 2 marker drawings in the works right now alongside multiple digital pieces, but I feel less pressure for each individual piece and more, freedom to just create.

I got myself a small square sketchbook a week ago for a purpose of it being more of a trash one, but so far I'm really enjoying working in it! I've been struggling with enjoying art for the past couple of years, hopefully keeping this sketchbook will help me regain confidence in myself. It's got thick enough paper so it makes me draw a bit more thoughtfully and not just scribble, and the small size helps to fill out pages quickly.

Oooh that's a great point about small sketchbooks, they take way less time to fill so it can help with motivation for sure! Sometimes big blank sketchbooks can be intimidating.

I used to feel the same about small sketchbooks until I bought a small 12x12 sketchbook to use as a scrappy 'sh*tbook'. I use it when I'm overwhelmed / tired / have bad MH; sometimes I draw one page and then stop (but feel good that I did something) and other days it helps get me over the activation energy and I happily draw more in it or move onto my bigger sketchbook (that lately feels overwhelming to start on first). I'd recommend a small sketchbook to anyone struggling to start drawing most days due to overwhelm. Plus in a sketchbook so small, it's nearly impossible to make 'spreads', a lot of my stress has been the pressure to make cohesive spreads all the time.

This was very soothing to draw along with, and the crow especially was very cute! I was doing my Hourly Comics Day drawings to this in my * checks it really quickly * Pentalic hardcover sketchbook, apparently.

I love the crows! They look so gentle and friendly-shaped (I could be biased though since crows are my favourite animals). The thing about sketchbooks - I’m kinda like you in a way where I tell myself to use this one sketchbook before I start another but that’s mainly because I had a bad habit of not finishing my sketchbooks when I was younger. Also, I was experimenting in my sketchbook - painted a couple of my OCs traditionally (these guys I almost always draw digital and I wanted to see what they would look like in gouache), experimented with colours and mark making on a yak with watercolours and fountain pen (my new favourite art supply is fountain pen and ink!) and did a very quick watercolour landscape in limited colours. Oh, and also painted a bird - as a little comfort treat (birds are my comfort subject).

Your videos have inspired me to go back and sketch in a traditional sketchbook again. So much of my art is digital now (which is great because I've learned a lot about color), but I have missed having a sketchbook of just doodles that help me explore and just do whatever. Love sketching along with your videos!

Love the spread! And the use of colors for the diferent crows is very smart and visually interesting. I think the difference is values helps a lot with referencing the real life colors. I got to a point where I actually don't like using premade sketchbooks. I like the freedom of just buying new paper or saving some scraps and putting them together with some binder rings. Also, I much prefer drawing in an horizontal format and sketchbooks binded like that are rarer and more expensive for some reason. A friend got tired of that and made me some nice cardboard and fabric covers 😆 But I feel it doesn't limit me so much, I can bend it and try new stuff all the time, I can add stuff I made away from home to the collection. I think it even helps with this anxiety of starting a new sketchbook because I can't ever be precious with it, and I just add new blank sheets, it's never completely empty.

Well I don't have a sketch book going at the moment, gotta get Christmas presents done, and I wasn't drawing while I was watching this. What I was actually doing was crocheting a bunny rattle for one of my cousin's sons, It could go to 1 of 2 not sure witch yet. So I wasn't drawing, but I was still doing something crafty. I do sometimes draw while I watch these though. 😋

I'm doing an interesting exercise where i use an image (this time a portrait) and sketch it really QUICK in my cheap sketchbook (like 2-min sketch, just lines) with all my different pencils (mechanical 0.5mm, basic HB pencil, rainbow pencil, thicker 3B pencil...) to see which one feels the best. It helps me make a choice of which materials i will bring around, and also using up pencils quicker (it's satisfying to me xD), Does anyone else struggle finding the right materials for them ?

I always have the same brand and size sketchbook as my main. I know I really like it for most things, but it just isn't always what I want. So I have big sketchbooks, black paper ones, and ones with paper for specific media. Never yet finished one of my side books,on my 9th main now. I do like having stuff in one book as well, but I have to create sidepaths or I know myself, I'll be demotivated or something. (Plus my main sketchbook is a 12×12CM square of not great paper, not ideal for most things.

While I like the idea of just keeping one sketchbook so the progression is linear, I usually keep 2 at a time - one cheap small one to do quick doodles, and one large one to practice and do multimedia work one! Both offer a certain degree of freedom, since the I can work faster and looser on the small cheap one, and learn more witht the bigger one.

If you wanted to upload one or more of these sketches, how do you scan and edit them in such a way that they don't lose their quality? I'm primarily a digital artist but lately I've found myself really stumped and I'd like to try sketching more to open up that inspiration. I just worry that if I then wanted to transfer my favourite pictures to an online space, or edit them on procreate to make prints etc. that I wouldn't know what I was doing and would end up ruining the quality or readability of the picture somehow. Do you have any tips for this?
