I Fell On A Tram Track in Brussels 🤦🏾‍♂️. What is The Solution to This Cyclists Death Trap?

Damn tram tracks! Dammit careless woman with wailing child! Damn billboard! I slipped and fell on a tram track 😱. After 5 years of no cycling accidents, now I have fallen thrice 🤦🏾‍♂️. I'm okay.
A man, 35, died from injuries in Ghent Belgium this week after his bicycle got stuck on a tram track and he fell off.
1 in 4 cycling accidents in some cities in Belgium are tram-related accidents, and these are only the ones reported or where victims are hospitalised.
Belgium has a bad reputation when it comes to public roads. Many cities in Europe have better cycling infrastructure than Belgium, although in recent years, cycling here has grown.
Experts advise that roads and bicycle paths should be separated. The Cyclists’ Union has asked to change bicycle infrastructure and separate rails and bicycle paths, New Mobility reports. However it is not so easy to do this in historic cities with narrow streets.
Well, the spacious Stockel should be able to do it 🤦🏾‍♂️

    Cycle lanes on tram tracks ? The two dont mix at all . Good job on falling away from the mother and child. Well done for the empathy I have been there its very difficult when you have to deal with your child in distress. As for crossing tram tracks 90° is definatly needed personally on a road bike I would get off and walk if I didnt have a 90° angle. Glad you are ok 👍

    Thank you buddy. I will def work on that 90 degree angle or get off and walk, looks like I have been lucky with that 45. Glad the mother and child were okay! I felt sad for her, I just wish she had sat away from the road 🤦🏾‍♂️

    the obvious solution would be to have cycling infrastructure be designed by someone who is a cyclist and have them ride their designs... outside of that... a solution would be hard Like, fat tires would greatly help, but that's not exactly appealing for cyclists. oke, so here is a crazy idea, but what if along both sides of the rails there are these little (strong) plastic "wall" section things, as tall as the rail is wide. when a cyclists attempts to cross the rails, the wheels will push the "wall" over the rails, creating a little bridge, allowing the wheel to safely cross and some spring mechanism will pop the wall back upright, allowing trams to pass. Or, in reverse, the rails are always covered by these crossing "walls" and Trams have a metal strip that goes from inside the rails up above the rails around the tram wheels pushing these "wall" sections out of the way as it goes along the track and these sections fall back down behind the tram. I dunno, it sounds far fetched, but it might work, and it would probably be less far fetched then waiting for city planners to properly fix this.

    There’s one solution, get a mountainbike, I have 70mm wide tires, those are never getting stuck in tram tracks

    Checking this video after slipping off the tram tracks on my bike when coming back home from work in Antwerpen. Rainy day, tracks were wet. Btw, the guy in Gent hit his chest on a metal pole when he fell. Be careful people!

    Same happened to me... Was riding in between the right track and the parked cars when behind a bend I see works slightly impeding on the road. Car right behind me who doesn't dare overtake me, I'm forced to make a smooth turn left to go in between the tracks without losing too much speed or the car would bump me. My wheels lock into the tracks and I fall. Thankfully I was not riding too fast and the car was able to stop in time. Didn't hurt myself but did crack my phone screen...

    Ouch! Had to happen… I have been there too but without a roadbike. It was cold wet too and so before I hit the ground did a nice slide on track 😩. Next stop was X-ray and 6 months of pain…. Luckily I didn’t break any bones. So count a lucky day.😇

    Pole sana,,,and on normal traffic das have there been incidences where vehicles and trains collide in those cross-overs ?

  • @MosesAmira

    @MosesAmira

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Dan. Yes there have been but the train also has brakes and can stop before this happens. Many times its the motorist's fault as when the tram is on the go it has priority even over pedestrians and cyclists
