I was there was three days in Bridge House (part of the Village, the other two lodgings being the Castle and the Hotel). I grew up in Los Angeles in a town that was used constantly for TV and movie shoots because it didn't look like California and because of its proximity to the studios. I have never seen anything like Portmeirion, which felt like you were THERE, from 1967. The series is very timeless in many ways, except some of the costumes. Being in Portmeirion was the closest thing to a magical realist experience that I have ever had.

I’m glad you enjoyed staying at Portmeirion, yes the bridge house looks like a great place to stay, I’d like to try more places there soon! The prisoner is pretty special and has many layers if you dive into the meanings behind it. I’d also love to visit California one day too 😄👌

The story about The Prisoner, as far as I can recall it being said at the time, came about entirely by chance. As you say, Patrick McGoohan was filming Danger Man at Portmeirion, it was just a location for a few scenes. By coincidence, Mr McGoohan had been told by George Markstein, Danger Man's story editor, of a secret place in Scotland that WW2 trained agents, withdrawn from active service, were sent to be away from enemy spies whilst waiting for the useful information they possessed to become out of date. It was that conversation with Mr Markstein and then seeing Portmeirion that caused Mr McGoohan to create the idea for it to become The Village for 'retired' agents for a new 1967 television programme that he would make called The Prisoner. Years later, in 1974, Mr Markstein wrote a novel called The Cooler based on the place in Scotland. If you ever wondered what The Prisoner was about, you could read the book and reach your own conclusion!

Many thanks for taking the time to let me know about Markstein's story, that's one I've never hear about before now. It reminds me a bit of the 39 steps, (1939 film is the best version). anyhow I'll be sure to get of copy of that book, so thank you!

I am grateful to you for this detailed exploration of Portmeirion : it was on my list of places to see and now that I have watched your video I do not feel I have to. I do not believe I have ever seen any place architecturally speaking more pseudo, if you except all Disneylands and Las Vegas with which I don't really want to make a comparason. After all, this is not just a tourist attraction, it's a real place that people actually inhabit. On the positive side the natural site is wonderful and the landscaping first class. I might even add the disposition of the buildings, but my praise ends there because everything is done for effect. It's not unpleasant on the eye with its pastel colours, but it's a mish-mash of classical styles, both Italian and Portuguese, using local materials, e.g. slate for the roofing. (Btw, it is time someone started to clean away the moss growing there!) They have used some recuperated materials, columns and the like, but no attempt has been made to build to Vitruvian standards. It's a fool's paradise.

I do agree. Not everyone has to be an architectural purist, but I personally was disappointed after all the hype I have heard over the years about this place.@@andrewemmerson

Mm indeed only 2 Priz location shoots in Portmeirion. The 1st in Sept 66 (incl a few days there with the Aloutte 2 chopper) and the 2nd in early 67 for some pick up shots.
