    If you ever have the chance, I highly suggest that you visit the Mack museum in Allentown, PA. I went in 2001, and it’s something that I will remember for the rest of my life. Their in house engineering/manufacturing capabilities were second to none.

    Great video! One correction. Air brakes are a restriction, not an endorsement. The only endorsements are double/triple trailers, tanker, hazardous materials, passenger, & school bus.

    Just for the record, in most states, an air brake endorsement only applies to CDL drivers. Many states do not require residents to have any special license requirements to drive a 54,000 lb motorhome with air brakes. I personally wanted to learn as much as I could about driving with air brakes prior to getting behind the wheel, even though my state didn't required it.

    The Mack Bros. would be proud of this truck. Mack trucks is originally from Allentown, PA. The 5C plant producing the trucks. The R model , I believe, was one of the most produced OTR truck anywhere.

    So happy to see you drive the Mack! I remember the first time I pulled a heavier truck onto the road and got on the gas pedal, I was surprised how swiftly the “lumbering beast” moved out...with the torquey motor and high kinetic mass. When there is nice tonnage on the hitch, the sensation is equally satisfying, maybe even a bit more. Traffic becomes less fun with a heavy load, but the long trips are really a joy in these newer trucks.

    Great videos Deon wish I was able to go back to OTR but that ain't happening with my medical history now. I thing is I saw yrs ago about a Peterbuilt that they were beginning to make a medium duty truck with aerodynamic bodies I know more and more big time ranchers here are going to medium duty trucks. My thing is I would need a 4x4 truck for where I live but need it crew cab and with a higher gear ratio for taking on trips and everyday type driving. I'm sure there maybe others like me interested in trucks sort of like this. Thank you And I had quit a few like that I shared the video of where people cut you off and not understanding the reason of distance we leave.

    Good video! So based on what you shared in this video, the answer to your question from a while ago seems to be that using a full-on class 7/8 truck vs. a a class 3 or class 4 truck is not a good idea because a standard fifth wheel rv (like your chaparral) doesn't have enough pin weight. This lack of pin weight means you could still easily bobtail.

I'd so love to ride along in an old-school Peterbuilt 379. Would be great also to see some vids about the various transmissions; Double shifters (eg a 6 & a 4), 18 speed with a splitter, auto, automated manual etc and how they each differ.

    I’m really enjoying these big truck videos. I drove for 8 years OTR but mostly city/ highway but that was close to 40 years ago,. I pilot an office chair for the government in Asset Preservation now. The trucks were no where near as nice as these. I still have my full CDL plus coach. Just renewed it so I’m good for another 5 years. If possible can you take a W900 with sleeper out for a spin? If not any KW highway truck would be fine. A Volvo Globetrotter full highway truck would be nice also. Thanks

    Take out the KW T-800 is my vote. I put 1.5 million miles in a couple of gold bulldog Mack's (and am a proud owner of the Mack 1 Million Mile Award) before moving off into a career in trucking safety. I worked for a brewery in Allentown Pennsylvania and we leased our trucks from Penske Leasing and the company insisted on Mack trucks being in the home of Mack trucks. I drove one of the first air-ride cabs produced by Mack and the selected drivers had to give feedback on the air-ride cabs. I loved the 300 Maxidyne engine with the 5 speed trans and full-screw differential. We drove around everything in the snow. Nice video and brought back memories.

    To simplify, air brake systems are spring applied, air released. You need air pressure to release the brakes. Reduce air pressure and the springs apply braking force. Lose all air you get full spring pressure applying the brakes. Increase air pressure you release the brakes.

    The sales rep didn't do a very good job of describing how the air brakes work. 1st of all the driver cannot just carry a tool to do the adjustment. Brakes are self adjusting now. If you get pulled in to the scale house or inspected by DOT and they find your brakes are out of service they will not just allow a driver to make adjustments. Nowadays you have to be certified.. The sales rep also explains that the valve evacuated all the air out of the system. What it actually does is it evacuated the air out of the break canisters. The system which usually is composed of multiple reserve tanks remains full. The only time that the system evacuated is if you're talking about the trader system..

    The Mack did not have air ride on the steering. If the OTR Kenworth has it you should feel the ride difference. Also, about the comment about super singles, having tried them years ago I do not like the way they handle in snow and I do not like the thought of a single blowing and being dead in the water if I can't limp to a truck stop.

  • @getpower1

    @getpower1

    Jerry Ashley I agree. I drive trucks in the vocational side of things. Mostly concrete. With the heavy front axles, we don’t have a choice. But as for the rears, I don’t like the way super singles handle. When you make a turn with a loaded concrete mixer, it’s not especially nice feeling. You can imagine the tire bending under the wheel when doing it. Also on the freeway, the drive is quite squirrelly compared to duals. I think duals look better too, but I’m probably the minority there. It’s all about weight savings to the huge corporations and one wheel and tire, however bigger, weighs less than two wheels and tires. That translates to more product on the truck.

    Big Truck Big RV yes I wasn’t sure how far you are from it. The main plant in in Oregon they also have one in Florida. Prevost (in my opinion) is the top coach builder on the planet. Marry that to one of the top converters and you have one hell of a motorhome. Even a 15 year old coach will outlast anything coming out of those other manufactures. Marathon, Liberty, Millennium and Featherlight are the big 4 in the conversion. If you feel like a road trip take your RV to Oregon for a full tour of their production facility. They have full hookup campsites You could use if you want to stay over. Im betting Marathon would love the exposure from such a successful channel. Your background in engineering would only enhance the experience.

    I would like to hear this gentlemen's thoughts on the use of super single wheels and tires that a lot of companies are switching over to that saves the companies money. I have been told by several drivers that they hate them because of lack of traction in bad weather such as rain and snow.

    they are very soft.. soaks up bumps well.. but they are bad in rain.. they will have you slide around in the rain.. it's better in the snow and mud.. also can't put too much power down during acceleration, braking and cornering...

    The bad thing about singles is when they go flat the axle drops. Then you end up paying for a new rim too

    I have a question! I recently upgraded my wheels and tires on my 17 f350 DRW.. I never have had to use sway bars cause I’ve never had issues with swaying. After the new wheels and tires 33 inch tires and 20 inch wheels now I sway unbelievably and i don’t get why?

  • @chris6200

    @chris6200

    6 жыл бұрын

    GypsyBoyy0908 Are your new wheels and tires taller than your old ones? If so that is the reason. As you raise the truck you increase sway and negatively affect handling . Are your new tires a different rating than your old ones? Tires with a lower rating will sway more but tires with a higher rating with ride harder. You may want to try something different if you dislike the way the tires handle.

    Just watched an OTR video. How about we see what the dirt guys deal with and go for the T800. Even better if it’s got an 18 speed and not an Allison! Four axles is gonna be some heavy GVWR. Especially with that big front end on it.

    I miss seeing more of these Macks on the road - they really are nice rigs. But I do want to ask why certain big rig manufacturers (Freightliner, International) do RV conversion while others like Kenworth and Peterbilt don't. This Anthem would look nice as a 45 foot RV conversion IMO.

    It's Mack that rebranded Volvo engines and transmissions as Mack, not the other way around. Some manufacturing and setup are brand specific (Volvo Europe, Volvo NA, Mack, Renault), and MAck does still build things like axles and suspension. But when Volvo bought Mack (actually Renault VI that owned Mack since 1990) the first thing they did was to shut down Mack engine. Witch is normal, a same company doesn't need to build two completely different engines for the same application!

  • @davidhobson8284

    Actually that's not exactly true, Mack was building their own engines until 2004-2005 engines when compound turbos came out for emissions and were a disaster for Mack. I know because my 2004 CH613 went thru 21...yes count them 21 turbos...thankfully all under warranty before I got rid of that truck! That was in less than 2 years that I owned that truck! Everyone else that had those engines had the same problems and that is when Volvo pulled the plug on Mack engine production. Mack engines 2003 and older were some of the most reliable engines out there, 2004 and on the engine itself was great never had issues but those Turbos were garbage!

    +dufonrafal: E7 ASET could not compete with Cummins ISX or Detroit DD15. Volvo's engine was already EPA 2010 compliant as well as being more efficient and more reliable than E7 ASET.

    I’m very, very curious if the truck had the new type of brake actuator instead of the old school brake pedal system. We have two new(er) Int’ls with what feels like electronic load cell actuators which make it hard for me (a 27 year vet driver) to modulate the brakes especially when bobtailing. Also, if that was a Mack clone of the i-shift we have in a Volvo, then it was the cream of electronic auto-shifting truck transmissions. Without a load or putting that transmission in manual you’ll never appreciate what 1800+lb-ft of torque really is!
