I feel sorry for so-called music lovers who don't understand how great this is.

This is the most beautiful one I have heard to compare all the other famous singers. She sang like natural, sweet, truthful, simplistic and beauty.

I just listened to five different sopranos sing this song and she is by far the best. What an exquisite voice. It is hard to believe that it was dubbed because she does such a good job. I have been listening to it every day for the past week...can't get it out of my head.

Like you, I tried several different renditions but, for me, this one is streets ahead of the others. Interestingly, Rosina Lawrence, who is singing here, also played Mary Roberts in the film "Way Out West".

@@varadero1839 The movie Pick A Star is more or less a showcase for her lovely voice.

The beauty and the substance is not only in the song being sung but also in the human contrasts created where the woman is mature enough to create the right emotions for the loving occasion while Oliver Hardy is slightly conscious and aware of the condition and situation while Stan Laurel is completely oblivious to what is going on in a woman's heart and proceed to eat and gnaws away at his food with the mentality of a child wondering what all that softy singing stuff is all about as he cannot get in to an equivalent mind and body space, to appreciate the issue in hand. Brilliant acting in every way.

Laurel and Hardy add to the gorgeous innocence of this version.

Lovely and sweet! As they say, this can't be beat. A truly memorable segment in film.

I've never heard anyone sing this song as beautiful as this. I was stunned by this beautiful singing, when I watched this film years ago. I'll bet you there are many opera buffs who don't know of this version. I've forgotten the name of the singer, but, I know she also sang with Laurel And Hardy in the "Virginia" song in Way Out West.

this is THEE interpretation of this haunting piece. ollie's love and tears at his daughter just makes it lovely. i will remember this til i die.

I was haunted by this song for many years Count John McCormack did a version all old, crackley & squeaky, but he brought it from Ireland to America in the 20s. A very famous song here in Dublin in my grandmothers time. But Ms Lawrence sung it perfectly (not forced), has to be sad and wistful. Nice one.

I think there exists a kind of Heaven for this type of song. In their heyday, these songs were considered as future classics! Time had other plans for them, and they sort of melted away. Whoever produced this L and H movie recognized a beauty when he heard it! He did everything right; great cast, beautiful orchestration, fine actress and dubbing singer. What's not to like? @@marcmomus yes. It’s one of the reasons why they kept cutting away to Stan Laurel eating during the song. It would be too difficult for her to lip-synch the whole song in one take so they were able to break it up in a couple of places where she could stop or redo parts of it.

It's such a wonderful gift when you can sing....

I looked this up on KZread because this song is in James Joyce's story, "Clay." This is a beautiful performance and that it is old fashioned resonates nicely with James Joyce.

No need to dismantle anything as Rosina Lawrence's lovely singing goes straight to the heart of this aria . Her light soprano voice has beautiful tone and fine technique. Jacqueline Wells makes the clip delightful , along with Laurel and Hardy..

What an absolute classic. I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls was my Grandmothers favourite, rediscovered by me in The Bohemian Girl as I watched Laurel & Hardy constantly as a child. It is so beautiful. They did a few of these comic operas I think. Swiss Miss & Fra Diavolo, spring to mind.

Hi Christopher Hardy, I posted this, and she really was lovely and very talented. I also remember her in "The Black Cat," with Karloff and Lugosi and later in "Rhapsody in Blue." Several years ago I visited Mendocino, here in Northern California. According to what I've read this is where she passed away at 87! This gem of a town has been used as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood/TV films, among them "Johnny Belinda," and "East of Eden," to name a couple! When she did "The Bohemian Girl" she was still very young. Her lip sync was beautifully performed. As for Mendocino, I'd head there right now; it's that lovely and interesting. Such a lovely scene. The wonderful voice of Rosina Lawrence and the lovely innocent endearing acting of Jacqueline Wells. It's a shame Ms. Wells could not have given Joan Sutherland some lessons in acting and stage deportment. Might have really helped.

It is never my intent to anger anyone, or insult any singers, I just try to give honest comments that are my opinions based on over 50 yrs of watching and listening to opera. I have said before that I respect Joan Sutherland as a kind, lovely woman, someone I could have been friends with and enjoyed a good cup of tea with but unfortunately, I consider her probably the most over rated singer in history. Spectacular high notes, yes. A voice that lasted, yes. But a robotic stage presence, extreme sloppy diction in all languages, just plain boring. Maybe she was just too nice, but again I thank you for writing.

If you wonder why they kept jumping back to Stan or Ollie in the song, it was so they had some places to edit so that Jacqueline Wells could do the lip-syncing in pieces and not all in one shot, and then they could choose the best takes.

Jeez, this is almost 90 years old. Some will get it. Many won't.

Such an exquisitely beautiful song. I first became familiar with it while watching this movie and of all the versions I’ve listened to, this one is the very best. There is also a video on KZread of this piece performed in 1986 by operatic star Jessye Norman which is also lovely.

Thank you Mr. Zeleznik! L and H often managed to sneak in a few tunes to their wonderful films, but I've always loved this one the best!

This song is so beautiful, its other-worldly. My mom loved opera and operetta and this was one of her favorites and she often played it on the piano....and so it makes me cry every time I hear it.

This lovely aria captivated me from the first time I saw Bohemian Girl. I was not aware until just now that, while I fell in love with Jacqueline Wells' enchanting theatrics, it was, in fact, Rosina Lawrence's delicately evocative voice that sent tears coursing to my eyes. Not a problem from my standpoint. Indeed, I praise the intelligence that brought these two lovely young women, with their respective strengths, into collaboration for the blessing of subsequent generations. Sincerely appreciate your own diligent research work!

Hi Mr. Williford, As the poster, I'm so glad to hear from you! Before I saw her in this wonder, I'd seen her in another film. She had a lovely distinctive face, but had short brown hair, and it was a serious horror/melodrama! That film was "The Black Cat," starring the 2 fiends of the day, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi! When I saw her in "The Bohemian Girl" I was confused because I knew her, but the blonde hair threw me. She performed in many films until 1957. Kinda wish she'd kept her Jacqueline Wells name, but she changed it in 1945 to Julie Bishop. I also read where she passed away in my favorite town, Mendocino, California! I spent 8 days there once, and it's an unforgettable place! Thanks so much for writing, varadero

Think they were portraying this as Nova Scotia! When last I visited this town, it still had just a little over 1,000 residents! Rosanna Lawrence's version of this wonderful song is by far the best! Yet she was known more as an actress than a singer! ( She was the girl in 'Way out west'. The pace, dynamics all perfection! The listen to Joan Sutherland's shrill loud version and you will conclude the above.

This to my way of thinking is the best version of the song. Such a pleasure to listen to.plus Laurel and Hardy, God bless them.

I was watching my Saturday morning Laurel and Hardy when this song came on, I was pleasantly surprised. The actress (Thelma Todd) who played the gypsy's queen's daughter died 'mysteriously' and the movie had to have major rewrites, and re-filming of entire scenes to work around it; the studio didn't want to be associated with the controversy.

I believe this version transcends the Sutherland one. It is my very favorite, however listen to the rendition by the late Jessye Norman which is also on KZread. It is truly perfection itself and was sung at a Command Performance for her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Wonderful.

Thank You! I, too, like the renditions by both Dame Joan, and Enya! Call it nostalgia, or what you will, but I 1st saw this when I was about 9-10 years old. If I'd known how, I'd have tried to discover the name of the singer much earlier. Lovely Rosina Lawrence sings here! My "library" was in the basement of our tiny-town firehouse! I kind of blame Hollywood for never having decided on an actual name for "Jacqueline Wells." Think the powers that were couldn't figure out what to name her! I had a really hard time too. Yes, Rosina Lawrence. If you wonder why they kept jumping back to Stan or Ollie in the song, it was so they had some places to edit so that Jacqueline Wells could do the lip-syncing in pieces and not all in one shot, and then they could choose the best takes.

Yes, she was also the "high" voice for Stan Laurel in Way Out West, in the Lonesome Pine song. (The deep voice was Chill Wills). The movie Pick A Star was more or less a showcase for her singing voice.

I think I heard this when I was like 6 or 7, Ut has been my favorite aria for well over 60 years!

There’s a beautiful rendition of this by Irish soprano Vanessa Fallon in the film about the explorers Burke and Wills

the lyrics are heartbreaking, yet she sings it with such innocence and gratitude, and the absurd characters just really make the juxtoposition so silly it's funny, plus her voice is lovely and moving

@@sarahm5936 No other version compare to Rosina' rendition , absolute none, beautiful, delicate, no melody distorting coloratura, or vibrato. Just perfect, the scene adds to the charm

I agree with you about Dame S's slightly overwrought work with this song. And I loved this recording from the film, completely new to me. This song always makes me weep, but especially after the death of my brother who loved it so much.
